Happy New Year to all.  May 2011 bring happiness and joy to all our lives.

Dead Horse Discussions

This is especially important to new readers. Some issues have been nitpicked, beaten, slain, buried, resurrected, reburied, etc, many times. These are called dead horses as in how long are you going to beat that dead horse? We tried letting the group decide what was a dead horse, but that didn't work very well. We have arrived now at the point where if I or another mod can't bear to read one more comment on a subject, it's officially a dead horse. As I phrase it, you are dancing on my last nerve. Please do not bring up these issues again. If you are a new reader and want to know what the previous discussion was, please search the blog or email another reader or a mod and ask.

Dead horse list:
The mini-mart liquor license (buried three or four times now).
Interpreting or not the house rules about emotion and behavior.
Home schooling unless it's something new seen on the show or in the news.
Whether the Duggars pay property tax (they do).
The state of Michelle's uterus. She's had 19 kids. That should say it all don't you think?
What other ATI/Quiverful/Vision Forum/whatever fundamentalists do. They are irrelevant. We're here to talk Duggars specifically.

Thanks and I'm sure additions will need to be made as we go along.

Seasons Greetings!

The Merry Mods at DWOP would like to wish all of our readers the very best for the holiday season. We hope that you stay warm and safe and get to spend time with the people you love. Thank you for visiting here and sharing your thoughts with us. Best wishes for a happy and prosperous 2011!

Josie Turns One Today

From Radaronline:

Little Josie Duggar -- the miracle baby and star of TLC's 19 Kids and Counting -- is celebrating her first birthday Friday and her mother Michelle tells all about the milestone!

"We are just so excited and we're so grateful to God to have her," the reality television mom said, in an exclusive interview.

"Reaching this landmark occasion her first birthday, I look back at the pictures and the video footage from the beginning to now and it an incredible journey."

Michelle, the mother to all 19 children, said Josie Brooklyn now weighs a healthy 15 pounds 12 ounces, and is wearing baby clothes for a six month old.

The "littlest little" as Josie is called on 19 Kids and Counting is like a "chunky little peanut," her mom said.

She said, "You know that song I'm a little teapot short and stout? Well that could be her little song! She is definitely short and plump now, she's got all these little rolls, it is so cute."

Dad Jim Bob and the older Duggar kids are on a mission in Hondorus and El Salvador, Guatemala; they won't return until December 15, which has delayed a big party for their much loved baby.

Said Michelle: "We'll have ice cream and Grandma and Amy and everyone else will come out to the house and celebrate. She has a little balloon that says 'Happy Birthday Josie'."

Josie is becoming quite the chatterbox, Michelle revealed.

"She can say 'Dada,' and she says 'Hi' and she waves hi when you say it to her now," she said.

"She's learning. We've heard her say 'Mama' three times and every time that she's done it I've run and I get my phone and I try to get her to say it again but she won't say it again.

"She claps her hands and she has her favorite book called the Ticklish book. That book will make her start jumping, squirming, kicking. She gets the biggest grin.

"She is rolling all over the place. She's not crawling yet. She spots something she wants and she just rolls over to it. It's so cute a cute little roll to get to it. She can sit up and we leave her up for a while. Then she plops over."

Michelle also reflected on the tough times the parents had when Josie was born, despite their previous experience.

"The touch-and-go of not knowing if she would live and the reality that when she had her bowel perforated on day eight the reality of the fact that she might not make it was so real that I think we took it one minute, one second, one day at a time," she said.
"We thanked God. It put it all in perspective. You can't determine the outcome in a situation like that. You just thank God for the moments you had with them. We took a lot of pictures and just tried to cherish every minute that we had her with us."

Both Michelle and Jim Bob have previously told they would welcome more children, but there isn't a little sibling on the way -- for now.

"We would just absolutely love that, but we're not right now," Michelle said.

"I don't ever feel bad when anybody asks me that question because our hearts are still the same in that regard as far as valuing life and cherishing life. We would be so grateful to God if he saw fit to bless us with another gift. At this time that hasn't happened.

"I am 44 going on 45 in September next year, and I'm thinking I'm not a spring chicken anymore and I know that could be a factor in all of that."

Questions - There Are Questions

I'm genuinely curious. For a website titled, "Duggars without pity," why are there so many posters who seem determined to defend each and every move the Duggars make, and each and every single comment that is critical? I see comments where single sentences are quoted from another poster and the sole purpose is to "prove" that the original poster is wrong. It strikes me that the name of the blog is not "In relentless support of the Duggars." I read the posting guidelines and didn't see anything that addressed this issue.

Dear Mat7 and any other nasty commenters

Dear Mat7,

Before you send this or any other blog a nasty comment, please look in the mirror and realize that you are being a hypocrite.  You don't wish to read anything negative about the Duggars, yet you feel free to be judgemental and hateful about anyone with whom you disagree.   People do have different opinions and as long as one is civil they are free to discuss them here.  No one here went out and attacked you.  You ventured here and lambasted the entire blog.  Your comment was not posted nor will any be posted that are without foundation, full of hatred and vitriole toward our readers, or are ad hominem attacks.

Thank you,

I don't know about the Duggars, but if my wife and baby almost died, that would be a message from God for a vasectomy (since they obviously enjoy sex) or actually PRACTICE NBC; their rules actually BEG for a horny husband during the abstinence for 4 to 5 days each month of the cycle and 7 day cleansing. No wonder he's such a horndog and it's set up to be pretty much right at ovulation time.

It's no wonder they have so many kids.

Why We Have to Have Rules

From our dear friend anonymous:

I don't understand why everyone is so rude to the Duggar family in this blog. They are good Christian people who had a tragic experience and chose to stop using birth control. They provide love, religion and all the necessities of life to all of their children. These people work hard to make sure their children have good character and love for Jesus. If any of you other bloggers can't say anything nice, just don't make a post. They are a wonderful family and our world should be more like the Duggars.

Josie Is Home - Again

Just a note from me: we are not sending comments about milk allergy through as lactose intolerance is not the same thing as a milk allergy.

Episodes in the Next Season

During the show hiatus, things naturally get quieter yet TWoP Howard seems to have banned speculation about episodes in the new season on the TWoP thread. If you want to talk about where the Duggars have been seen that may appear in an episode, suggest a good episode, etc, this is the spot.

Compare Yourselves to The Duggars

How are you like the Duggars? How are you different from the Duggars? Suggested topics are clothes, food, religion, parenting choices, patriarchal/matriarchal roles and education. Or whatever relates or does not relate to you. Let's keep this a no-snark topic please.

Thanks to Celestie for her suggestion.

How We See Things Differently by Anonymous

Normally this kind of comment would not go through as it's a perfect example of "boards on boards." However, since the show is on hiatus, this may be a reasonable time to talk about why people see things differently. Please remember to be respectful of other commenters and their right to disagree or have different opinions.

I know some feel that various negative comments re the Duggars is "nit picking." I feel compelled to point out that if a person, or couple in this case, choose to hold themselves out as a very public example of how people should behave, then they must take the good with the bad.

The Duggars take money (quite a bit of money) for TLC to film their lives and present them to a television audience. They say they do this as part of their ministry. Some agree. Others, like myself, call it very convenient.

You never saw Mother Teresa on a reality tv show. She lived what she preached; i.e., in near poverty level, right down among those she was trying to help. I did not agree 100% with Mother Teresa's beliefs or philosophy, but I respected her deeply for truly living her convictions, without need for publicity or public affirmation. She truly exhibited modesty in all she did. (I also never heard of her once handing out pictures of herself to strangers, or signing a Bible. Maybe she did and I just missed hearing about it.)

By putting themselves into the public eye and accepting large monetary payments to do so, Mr. and Mrs. Duggar opened themselves up to all eyes, whether they be accepting and approving, critical and disapproving, or somewhere in between.

I fully support anyone's right to comment about how they perceive the Duggars. I would ask that others respect my right to post my own thoughts whether you find them nit-picky or not. Thank you :)

Questions for the Duggars

Do you or have you in the past spanked or used other corporal punishment on your children?

Do you vaccinate your children?

Do you give your children daily multi-vitamins?

When your children turn 18 do they then have non-restricted access to the internet?

When your children turn 18 are they then permitted to go anywhere alone, as opposed to always taking a sibling along for "accountability"?

For Josh.....does Anna have non-restricted access to the internet? (since, as per your wedding vows, when you got married "authority" over Anna passed from her Dad to you.)

Does TLC ay the Duggar family en masse?

As they say on TwoP, please take turns driving the ISB (Idle Speculation Bus).

Exactly what is your question? My family is close friends with the Duggar's and the Bate's(the Bates have 17 kids and are expecting number 18). Their children are very well behaved and do exactly as their told. They are not neglected, left out or abused. They very much no how to handle their kids, who are becoming very well contributing citizens of this country. I really respect them and if they can handle it, why not have that many kids?
Keep watching the show because they are about to drop a huge bombshell- they told us last Sunday. GOD bless.

Question About Blogs

This question has been asked several times recently. I'm not sure if all the questions have been by the same person, but the question is why do GWoP and DWoP run differently if they are really under the same ownership? Yes, they are run by the mostly the same people. A couple of GWoP associated people do not choose to work on DWoP and that is fine.

The real difference is the attitude of the commenters and readers. So far the mods have not been treated to profanity and obscenity laced threats related to DWoP. Those started within the first few weeks on GWoP. The majority of commenters here comprehend that a positive comment about the Duggars does not involve an attack on the blog, the mods, or the other commenters. Of those who don't, all but a very few either leave or change their commenting style reasonably quickly.

Attacking someone or their comment isn't a positive comment. For example on GWoP, a "positive" comment is "You all are just jellus haters and need to get lifes. Leave Kate along." (Errors are theirs.) The Kate supporters can almost never muster a comment in support of her but normally only attacks against other people. Here most positive comments are along the lines of I admire the Duggars for how they manage their finances to remain debt free.

The amazingly few positive comments in support of Kate that are truly positive comments and not snide, sarcastic, or intended to start a flame war go through. I am very intolerant of flame wars so if there is even a hint that a comment will start one, out it goes. So the answer as to why the blogs are run differently is you, the dear readers and commenters here, who can usually disagree with grace, decorum, and dignity. Thank you!

Superficial Appearance by Anonymous

Intriguing point raised in a recent offline discussion:Would the Duggar show, wondered a co-worker, be so popular, and would the mainstream population be so tolerant of their views, even given the recent very sobering Baby Josie "story arc," if the family members were less attractive? Michelle, he mused, is a very pretty lady, and her daughters are growing up to be very pretty girls, some of them absolutely stunning. The boys are at least on the reasonably handsome side of the fence, and the children are all cute enough to pack off to a modeling agency tomorrow. Even Paw Duggar, the venerable JimBob, while he makes what most would concede to be some deplorable hairstyle choices, would not win an Ugliest Man on TV prize. But what if they looked like just your average run-of-the-mill rural family who, even if only as a result of having virtually no skills in the cosmetic arts or their application, little or no knowledge in the grooming customs du jour, and limited access to all that creams and potions and salons and electric hair appliances that make it possible for so many run-of-the-mill families, rural and otherwise, to make themselves look attractive. What if, as a result of all that, they all looked like stereotypes of unsophisticated "fundamentalist," with lots of visible complexion blemishes, lank, flat, dirty-looking hair, with the occasional absent tooth here and there - and the present ones unlovely, bespeaking a lack of orthodontia and whitening products, if they had beady little eyes and ratlike Snopesian features, most of them significantly overweight, with a couple bordering on morbidly obese? What would we say about them then, about the whole story of Josie, and how Michelle and JimBob intended to continue right on ceaselessly reproducing? Would we enjoy watching them in large enough numbers that a network would be able to get and keep sponsors?

What Do You Think The Future Holds?

Does anyone genuinely worry about these kids, especially the daughters, from a perspective of odds being against ALL 19 kids growing into adulthood in complete lockstep with their parents' ideology. I seriously wonder what others predict will happen if/when some of the Duggar kids go off on a completely different tangent, i.e., a less fundamentalist approach to life, one that may even include things JB&M consider on the fringes of 'sinful', like not wanting children of their own or at least being publically very pro-birth control. What if some of the kids end up facing divorce (it happens even to those of us with the highest and most committed intentions)or decide to live on their own before marriage and even (gasp!) wear normal clothing and have a diverse group of friends?

I know the rhetoric is that JB&M will accept and love their children even if they don't follow in a straight line, but, seriously, what do you think will REALLY transpire if/when some of the kids are not clones of their parents and their parental ideology?

Different Approach

Since the arguments and rudeness to other posters continues, we'll be having a new approach for awhile. All parts of arguments that I see will be removed back to and including the comment that started it (the beginning of the argument). Unfair? Perhaps, but I've used this technique on other blogs and it has proven effective. Please remember you may may state your own opinion and state it as an opinion, but telling others that they are wrong, calling them out by name, rehashing and rehashing, are not progressing the discussion.

No more J'chelles and other nicknames, please. Their real names are just fine and are not derogatory.

Motivation by Deanna

What I really do wonder, is whether Jim Bob knowingly signed on to be a reality TV star, and whether he realizes now how far they have strayed from their original intentions to "motivate" others? Can we really blame TLC completely for this family's complete betrayal of their supposedly original values? Even if they did sign an iron-clad contract, would they not have seen that filming births, premature infants, etc. would not be in line with the very message the family purports to want to send?

Or is Jim Bob just a very savvy business man who looked at his giant family as a personal cash cow, one that could make them very rich? In other words, when they staged all the scenes discussed above, did he do so willingly, because it was ALWAYS all about the money?
What do people think? Were they sellouts from the get-go, or did Jim Bob just get lured in by the money after awhile?

Thanks to Deanna

Duggars Dance to the TLC Tune?

I know we are all fascinated, as a viewing public, by the events in these people's lives. We all love to see little people, giants, people born without faces, morbidly obese people, people with multiples face adversity and overcome obstacles. I think the original intention of these reality shows was to depict triumph of the human spirit. That was a good thing.

But these reality shows, with children in particular, have become like a circus. Their lives are being played out on national TV, with all the family drama (G family, little people). It just isn't right or healthy for children, including the Duggars, to grow up with TV cameras filming their daily lives. Being a reality TV star because your parents were so foolish as to sell off your childhood is really dangerous. In many ways it is far worse than other child stars (of movies, etc), because none of the little Duggars had a choice or even believe that they are "acting".

These reality shows have gone too far. They are exploiting families, and the families go along with it because they love the money. Jim Bob and Josh probably couldn't provide for their families, at this point, without TLC. They have gotten themselves into exactly the same position as the G family---greed has a way of doing that.We should boycott ALL reality TV shows with children. They're all exploitive!

Josie Report

Cousin Amy has reported that Josie is up to 2 lb 4 oz.

Sun, Jan 31 2010, Special Duggar Delivery

Complications arise when Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar's 19th child, Josie, arrives prematurely.

UPDATE: 19 Kids and Counting Premieres Jan 31.
Less than a year after welcoming Jordyn-Grace into the world, Michelle Duggar gave birth, months prematurely, to her and husband Jim Bob's 19th child and ninth daughter, Josie Brooklyn, in December 2009. And there's more room at the inn -- the Arkansas family's 7,000-square-foot home -- as the couple say they'll continue having children as long as Michelle is able. The Duggar brood also includes MacKynzie Renee, eldest son Josh's daughter, also born in 2009, with wife Anna. (From MSN)

The Duggar family is no stranger to welcoming a new baby to the family. But when complications arise, Jim Bob and Michelle meet baby nineteen, Josie, earlier than expected. Watch as the family welcomes Josie with a Duggar-sized amount of hope and love. (From TLC)

Will update with other sites as they become available.

Please do not report a date change. Going to the schedule from the Duggar page does not show the episode on Jan 31. However, the master TLC schedule has it on Jan 31.

Free Discussion January 2010 Part Two

Please use this for Duggar sightings, speculation, or general discussion. Note that this is Duggar discussion not other families, TV shows, or personal stories. If you wish to discuss other TLC shows, please visit Thank you!

I closed the other thread both because of it's size and how things were getting overly contentious again. We understand religion is part of the Duggar's life, but we need to keep the discussion there on what is part of the show and not venture into each other's religions, please. The problem usually arises when there are no new episodes and people start speculating about the Duggars.

Anonymous Comments

The question was sent through again about not having anonymous comments since it gets confusing who has which opinion. I put up a poll to see what most of the readers think of the option. Please vote if you have an opinon or you make select don't care if it doesn't matter to you.

I received a comment about the poll and find some info is in order. Your choices when commenting aren't only to have a Google account or be anonymous. You may select name/URL and put in the name of your choosing without bothering with the URL portion.

The poll closed and we will continue offering the anonymous option. 103 voted to continue allowing anonymous plus another 60 selected don't care. That is against 92 who wanted to end the anonymous option. Thank you for voting and making your wishes known.
