I need to explain something.

I'm making this a post so everyone will hopefully see it.  There has been a huge increase in people replying to comments with the expectation apparently that either the previous comment will be quoted or their comment will fall under the one to which they responded.  Neither one happens in the format we are using on many platforms.  So comments that don't contain any context like I agree make no sense.  You agree with what?  There are 200 comments above yours.  That is wrong?  Which one?  I think you get the idea.  So please remember if you pick an option such as reply to, you are not replying to that when it hits the blog for a large number of readers.

ETA:  Apparently I'm still not getting through to people.  Someone asked why I was selective with comments.  Oddly it was one of the people this post is aimed toward.   I'm selective first because rude, crude, and indelicate are not acceptable.  Other things like birthing wars have no place here.  But recently nonsensical comments because of the manner of posting are becoming a bigger and bigger issue.

Here is an example from someone who did not read this post and I also believe is the one who asked why posting was selective.

in response to I am going to try to say this as politely as possible, but Jessa really showed her true colors during this episode. I know its an ego trip to have a show wrapped around your wedding and the modeling of wedding dresses, but really? Her smugness and mean-ness was just over-the-top. I was shocked, even for Jessa, how arrogant her talking segments were. I shouldn't have been, however, as I well remember how hateful she was to Hannie about taking a nap once. Anyone could have a bad day, but this is, apparently, the real Jessa and it is not pretty at all.

As you can see, the commenter knows to which comment they are replying, but all that will post on the blog for many people is "I agree."  So then it becomes you agree with what?  It's meaningless and gets deleted.

Thank you for this, Sharla, because most of the time I don't know what the poster is commenting on either. I don't know how to 'paste" the post I'm referring to, so I type the text that I'm responding to myself...This will make all posts easier to associate with....

LOL....I keep looking for the 'Like' button as well....this is 'problem' is probably all blamed on facebook.

Thank you for the clarification. What I find confusing in trying to follow comments is everyone using anonymous. It would be nice if everyone could pick a name (any name they choose to use). Just a thought.

Sharla said...

I have considered requiring names again. Do people generally prefer that?

Sharla, thanks for the great job you do. I also am remembering your family during this difficult time.

I prefer using names. Thanks.

Yes, names are better.

Janice here - I agree that names are better, but in order to use your name, it appears that you have to have an account or web site which I don't want to have.

Sharla said...

To use a name, after typing your comment look at the selections below the box.

The first one requires an account with Google. The second with various others. The THIRD is the one you want. Click the box and a space will open to type in your name. Ignore the URL part.

yes...names would help so much. On my screen the Name/URL choice is second.

I think using names helps. Thanks Sharla, as always.

I'm not very computer literate, so I hope I do it correctly...

Sharla said...

That was fine, Grace.

Many thanks, Sharla for letting me know that I have conquered yet another computer obstacle...
BTW, I hope you are doing "ok" with your family situation; I have been there, so I know.

Janice said...

Thank you, Sharla, for explaining how to use the Name/URL option!

THANK YOU Sharla I HOPE YOUR FAMILY IS OK

Thanks for the good wishes. I wish I could say the parents are OK. They aren't. The kids and grandkids are great though. My daughter was here for a visit and left just a bit ago so that was good.

My apologies. I think I may have deleted two or three comments instead of approving them. I should not be doing comments this late at night.

Sharla: thank you for explaining it. I find names better. Especially when answering a particular post. If there are several anonymous persons with the same topic, even writing to "Anonymous" with a reference to the topic would not be helpful. But if I could say - for Instance - To Bismarck re Duggar Piety, it is clear to whom and to what exactly I refer. :-)

Re: replying to comments. I just wanted to mention that when I am on my phone (mobile browser), I CAN see to whom people were replying. On the computer, I can't. So, if we have a bunch of new users who are mobile, that would explain why more people would e choosing that function.

If you want your comments published, then don't put messages to the mods in them. Saying things like I know you won't publish this, my previous comment didn't get published, etc. guarantees it won't go through.

Regarding the problem with not citing specifics: when posting a reply:
I'm fairly new here, and may have replied in one thread, and just one time.
Since there's no way to quote what it is we want to respond to, would just putting up the phrase 'regarding' or simply, 're' followed by a bare bones description of what we're referring to, help out the moderator(s)?
Aldo, I'm changing from anonymous to my name.
Thanks!

Bobbi said...

Josh got a GED. Josh never enrolled in college .

sunny side up said...

Mary, there's actually a recent video that shows Josiah before and after he got his wisdom teeth out! So, I guess it's not just the girls.

Willow said...

Mary - I'm pretty sure Joseph had his out as well. Seems like I remember Jinger, or Joy, taking the blame because he forgot his paperwork or something like that.

Willow said...

Now that I am thinking about it more, it might have been Joseph getting braces and not his wisdom teeth.!

Josh only has a GED and yet he claims to be attending law school? Is it the University of American Samoa, Saul Goodman's alma mater?

Wampascat said...

Hey,don't be knocking Saul!

Bobbi said...

Sally, to gain admittance into law school one must first earn a Bachelor's degree, take the LSAT law school aptitude test score well then apply to several law schools. A Person with only a GED, will never gain admittance into a credible law school. I do not nor will I believe that Josh Duggar is in law school.

Don't the live in Virginia? That's one state that still allows people to become a lawyer by "reading the law" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reading_law) but Virginia does require a bachelor's degree (http://barexam.virginia.gov/reader/readerrules.html).

The real tragedy here is that Josh had this dream and he wasn't allowed to pursue it because his parents don't allow their kids to get much education and then push them into early marriage and babies or make them hang around the house and work for the family. If Josh had been allowed and encouraged to postpone marriage and go to college who knows what he might have accomplished. He might not have made, lots of people don't, but he never got a chance to try and neither are the other kids.

Sharla, I thought that I just made a comment but apparently I am even more computer illiterate than I thought. I somehow missed your reports on your troubles but hope things get better for you soon.
I very seldom post but read regularly read and thank you for your time and efforts.

I've done my best to continually contact TLC & other media including Dr. Phil. However it's been to know avail & I am moving on. Life is too short to deal with the hypocritical, lying & disgusting Duggars.y only hope & prayer is that somehow if the Duggars return to TV, very soon they will implode & then they will be finished for good. I pray this happens. The Duggars continually prove they cannot manage their lying ways as they can't handle the truth & eventually all lies are exposed. So Done!!
