Wonder if this will bother the duggars? Interesting that a Christian network picked them up.
Maybe the Duggars will join the Bates in the move. That way they can speak freely about their beliefs.

I would be interested to see how the Bates family is portrayed, and whether they are as ultra-fundie conservative as the Duggars. Since Gil Bates is now "pastoring" his own church, (and how he does this without ever having attended seminary is a mystery to me), the Bateses might believe this is a golden opportunity to start their own little break-out, IBLP/Gothard franchise. The last time I checked, Gil was on the IBLP board.
Gil & Kelly seem to me to be more hands on with the raising of their children...soo much better than the way Michelle does with her "blessings"...she only likes to give birth and nurse & then she hands them off to "buddys". I for one can't stand this about her. Gooo Bates...i will be watching!
I agree with anonymous9/23 @6:59pm I have wondered about how Gil Bates could be a pastor, perform the marriages of his daughters & pastor a church. The answer I've receive is that anyone can take online courses & become a pastor. That's of course if the "Lord has laid it on their heart."
tlc had them on at one time but it did not last.
These Gothard men are so arrogant and sexist that they believe they can do anything without bothering to get licensed or educated.
I'm really happy for the Bates getting this opportunity, and would like to watch; however, I don't have cable. I like the Bates family a lot. I, too, wonder if the Duggars are bothered that they were picked up by a Christian network and the Duggars come on the same channel as Honey Boo Boo and Gypsy Sisters lol.
Regarding 9/23/2014 6:59 PM and 9/23/2014 9:16 PM's and comments: anyone can register as a "justice of the peace" and thereby be certified to perform civil marriages. In order to sign marriage licenses, even ordained clergy of all religions have to be recognized by the state in which they live. Regarding the minimal preparation for pastoring a church gained by taking a couple of online classes, the Lord has "laid on my heart" the calling to be a surgeon. Who would like to be first in line for an appendectomy? I took a four week course in human anatomy from an online university, so I'm all ready to go! :-)
It seems to me that healing the soul is at least as important as healing the body, so why shouldn't people expect their preachers to be as well-educated as their doctors? And now, stepping off the soap box! Thank you, everyone, for letting me opine.
I agree that these families do everything "unofficially" like preach and start their own church, but having said that, how could have the authority by the state to officiate a marriage? Are they notaries, or justices of the peace? Even they don't add up.
Interesting. We get UP and it's mainly reruns of Walton's, Little House, Judging Amy (they censor this once in a while) and the like. I think in the mornings they have some faith-based type of talk shows.

Any licensed minister can perform marriages in the States, that's why we don't have to have separate civil and religious ceremonies like many countries require. The pastor can sign the marriage license. I don't know what you have to do be considered a minister qualified to officiate marriages in any state. All the ones I've known have been legitimate graduated-from-seminary-ordained-and-licensed-by-their-denominations ministers.
I don't see the Duggars changing channels anytime soon,as long as tlc will have them.I think tlc most likely pays more than the UP channel will pay the Bates,jmo of course.
Add to that Jim Bob seems awfully confident in the show continuing,as evidenced by him allowing the Jessa/Ben marriage,to be supported by the show,contrary to whatever 'business' he sets up for Ben as a front for the show,like he did for Josh and the car lot.Which makes me think he may have some sort of long term contract with them,idk.Just guessing.
I still don't know how Gil Bates can officiate at a wedding ceremony. What are his real official qualifications? Whether religious or civil.. Anyone out there know?
I went through some missionary training with an organization in my state. It was five months of courses and other practical training from the field. The credentials of it were enough for me to get a ministerial license in that state. I had the credincials filed in the county court house and actually performed my sisters wedding ceremony since she didn't have a pastor she was really comfortable with marrying her and her husband. My friends dad never went to seminary (or at least didn't get a degree) but had credentials to perform her wedding ceremony in a neighboring state. I don't consider myself an ordained pastor by any means but I say this to say you can get credentials through the state without full on seminary and ordination. Anybody can choose to gather a congregation- they just can't marry people if they don't have a license. Whether you think they are legitimately and rightly wielding the word of God is at the discretion of the people who choose to go or not go. There's no law that enforces that only seminary graduates can have churches I don't think.
My brother in laws ex wife officiated their daughter's wedding. She obtained the certification online. From what I gathered, it was very easy to do.
Like I said, I have no idea what you have to do or be to be licensed, just that you can. And ship captains can do weddings, too. I don't know how that works, either. I'm surprised Jim Bob doesn't get licensed and do his own kids' weddings. He does everything else, so why not.
I did some research and found that Gil is registered in the state of Tennessee as an ordained minister. In an interesting twist it turns out his middle name is Master!

I can see Gill Bates as a Justice of the Peace, but I'd like to know when he became an ordained minister. I would think that would involve being a seminary graduate. I know he went to college, but seminary follows college as you would pursue a; "Mater's Degree, after your undergraduate degree.
Just another show about a Gothard man controlling "his" women and children by telling them this is the way God wants you to be. Sick.
It will be another show with Kelly looking "adorably" at her husband while he speaks.......ugh..
I hate the Bates family. The mother gives me the creeps and so does Erin.
On another site, I just saw a picture of Brandon Keilen and Michael Bates in a cozy, frontal hug. They are not even officially engaged yet. Yeah for them. They are so cute. The Duggars are just so weird with their unnecessary rules!! (I know that is not news, lol) :)
When is this show going to be on? What date, network and time? I'm curious to see what advice Gil has taken from Jim Bob as to how to extract money from TV and the public, two things the Duggars don't associate with.
The Bates' new show I believe is going to air January of 2015. I hope it lasts as I m tired of the hypocrisy of the Duggar clan
Have you guys read on the Bates family blog how Kelly talks about their older kids making their own decisions on modesty. They also allow them to make their own courtship rules like holding hands, full frontal hugs, etc. I actually believe them unlike the a Duggars claim that their kids make their own courtship rules. Ya right......
After brainwashing their children for at least 18 years or more, letting "them" decide about courtship rules is laughable. And modesty dress??? Come on---this family is screwed up just like the polygamists, Amish and Duggars from Gothardville.
