I am new at reading the Bible. I cannot seem to find why the Duggars believe they can't eat bacon (pork). Can anyone help me out?

how and why is jessa always out decorating some other woman's home/baby room??Is it just for a storyline??I do not get it.she was down to redo jinger and Jeremy's apartment, their new home and now the nursery...is Jinger not capable of this??I thought she was the one with the most style??Does she have an opinion on anything??Jessa needs to stay home and mind her own house, and clean up the diapers.I still do not get Jinger the fashion icon..where is the spunk at?People keep calling her a rebel..but she is just following her husband's rules...he is "allowing"her to wear them..on another note Jeremy dos not seem the type to allow another woman to dictate how his home is decorated...he does not seem the type to have second hand stuff in his house...and he and Jinger seem to be well put together and seem to have good taste...it baffles me how Jessajust bulldozes her way in as the interior design "expert"

Does anyone really want to see another Duggar courtship, side hug, staged proposal, say-yes to the fundie dress, no-budget shower, a wedding of 2 uneducated teenagers with 1,000 (lol) guests, one more canned "precious" congratulatory video, or one more birth episode?

We want to see the children go for vaccinations and pass academic tests. And see Jessa and Ben's budget and what actually he does for a living. A real day in the life of Jana and where exactly she lives. Anything about John and Abby ( hopefully) moving to a home near her family. Duggars are supposed t

For the person with the question regarding pork/bacon. In the old testament there is reference to not eating "cloven hoofed animals".........this would include pork and ANY meat from an animal that has a "split hoof" (sheep are also cloven hoofed), but pork is was considered the most unclean. Seafood (clams etc.) were also considered unclean. Most protestant churches do not follow this belief and will eat all meats. I don't know all of the details with regards to this, but grew up in an area that had a very large 7th Day Adventist population and they follow this same type of teaching, with most being complete vegetarians.

Jilly Muffin discovered that her children like to play outside! Honestly, I feel sorry for her. She had a very strange upbringing. Apparently her days were spent helping mama, protecting herself and the younger kids from Josh, hording food for herself, monitoring her mother's monthly cycle, being a buddy team leader, fulfilling "jurisdictions", homeschooling and parading around to political events with the family. What a stunted, sad and suffocating childhood. Now that she has children of her own and she is no longer living in the ganglands of central america, she can actually let the kids play outside but from her blurb on her website it sounds like a completely new and creative idea to let kids play out of doors. Wow. Poor Jill.

Now I am really confused about the Duggars not eating pork. I see several scriptures that say it is ok,such as Acts 10:12-15 Is that just a Baptist belief????

No, not a common Baptist belief, but Gothard.

Mickey2942 said...

The Duggars seem to "cherry pick" the bible to fit together some sort of unusual beliefs. This family is definitely not a very good example of fundamental Christian values, culture and beliefs.

Ginny said...

Mickey2942 - I agree with your comment regarding the Duggars (Gothard) "cherry picking" different scriptures from the bible. This is very common within different cults, which I believe 100% that the Gothard religion is. I grew up in church and was taught very early on that you have to take the bible as a whole......not pieces and that you should be very wary of religions to "cherry pick". Another very telling sign of a cult is that they tie their beliefs to their leader, and not necessarily sound biblical teaching. There is so much about the beliefs of the Duggars and Bates that has no biblical basis. The wearing of dresses etc. and not pants. They tie this to "dressing modestly". Also, the long hair.......just so much of it is because they blindly follow the teachings of a man and HIS interpretation of the bible. The more I learn about the teachings of this religion, the more it reminds me of the FLDS church.......and that scares the crap out of me.

Elspeth said...

Point of clarification to the above, Gothardism (IBLP/ATI) is not a religion. It's a parachurch movement. It doesn't hold its own services or have a churches or pastors. It's more of an adjunct to religion.

Inquiring mind said...

Whoa..... cherry picking when talking about dressing modestly. I googled like this: Biblehub 1 Tim 2:9

Heart in Florida said...

So, Gothardism in itself, isn't necessary for salvation. It's not a religion? I think it's a set of social rules about living. NOthing to do with God, really IMO. It's a shame that these types of families choke their children in to this. After all, they are the first generation to be 'born in to it' as their parents had regular, normal lives, dated, kissed, went to school, had friends, went to parties, watched TV, etc. Their children were given no choices about it.

lisa Mcginess said...

they do have the main building in Oakbrook il that is my Micheal and Brandon live in Chicago and the Paine family and Anna sister and husband. they work there.

Debbie said...

Gothard seems to use religion and the language of the bible to recruit and maintain his followers. An example of this can be seen in the (fictional) The Handmaids Tale. (And that was written in the mid 80’s!).

Christianity is based on the teachings of Christ. I always understood that many of the old laws were lifted after Jesus. That Gothard cherry picks from the Old Testament tells me it’s about control, and not about Christ. By controlling every aspect of his followers lives he is able to keep them under HIS umbrella! Speaking of which - is there anywhere in the Bible that speaks if this so-called “umbrella of protection”. They must be so brainwashed to stay in that belief system. It’s sad.

How long will Derrick last at law school?

The many "jobs" of Derrick Dillard.
1. Short lived reality tv star, lasted until his vitriolic comments about Jazz Jennings.
2. Missioncationary, in Costa Rica.
3. Internship at Cross Church to be a preacher, what happened to that goal?
4. Short term appointment at Wal-mart, as an accountant, he quit, but his comments about working with women, make me think that this was a mutual agreement.

2 kids, and counting, plus a wife who pretends to be a "mid-wife", with no medical credentials or education.

Next up, he will flip houses...

Mickey2942: Derick strikes me as the sort of man who couldn't stand having a woman as a boss because he thinks that women should only be wives and mothers, and should not voice their thoughts or opinions. He also strikes me as someone who would not take criticism well and would not like being told what to do, especially by a woman boss. He would feel threatened by a smart articulate female, I also think he is affraid to be around women because of course we all just want to lure him to impure thoughts and sin (think you're safe there stud!) The whole missionary thing was because he sort of got to be his own boss, although if rumors are to be belived he messed up there too and was asked to leave. Finally you have made me curious what comments did he make about working with women, I must have been busy at work that day!

I truly wonder why Jill keeps posting these awful recipes . Today it was some completely unhealthy pasta dish with 2 sticks of butter. Is she that dense not to realize the scrutiny she will endure? Is she doing it for attention, any attention even if it’s mocking and cruel ? Why hasn’t Mechelle pulled her aside for a chat about the fool she’s making of herself? Pretty sure very few if anyone actually tries making any of these recipes . Just one big joke on Jill.

Ruby said...

Not my religion, what struck me about Jill's recipes, aside from them being super simple, unappetizing and very unhealthy, is that they all belong to her mother, or she remembers them from her childhood or they are recipes from the Duggar Blog. In other words, Jill has not separated herself from the Duggar family. She has not learned anything new since she was about 12. She is still very attached to her mother and her mother's way of doing things. She seems stuck in perpetual adolescence.

I don't think the Dillards lived in Costa Rica. It's actually a very nice country, and a lot of ppl go there to retire.

Since Josie Bates got married, I wonder if she'll give up her cosmetology career. Seems like on the show we saw that she just got her own "chair" at a salon. Is her husband the plumber? I know one of the guys is, can't keep them straight anymore.

penny said...

I feel bad for Jill, her mom was idolized for the kinds of recipes she posts on her blog..yet she posts them and she is crucified.they made that tater tot casserole with great pride.I do not get how Derick can be in school full time...I always thought student family housing was for very young couples with babies right out of highschool, not men pushing 30 who should be settled already.I often wonder if any of the kids suffer from ptsd or some form of stockholm symdrome..especially the girls who were sexually abused in their own home and not protected by their parents.

ice cream sandwich said...

Pasta sauce with two sticks of butter, indeed! Jill should get off social media, clean up her house and spend her spare time educating herself in some way, maybe by doing something as radical as reading a book from the library while her children play outside in the dirt. She comes off as truly ignorant and simple.

colen said...

per " penny said...
...I always thought student family housing was for very young couples with babies right out of highschool,..."

It depends on the school. Grad school housing is different and if undergrad housing is run by a private housing comp. that has a school contract, they will rent to any student. A lot of colleges/univ. work with private housing comp. now. Instead of dorms, they have condos.

Jill and Derick look like they're still living in the duplex where they were while Derick was attending Cross Church's pretend ministry school.

Josie Bates dress and wedding was beautiful, but her 'bouquet' was far too large, and it looked like a big clump of leaves from Gil's tree cutting service! I guess they were going with the 'outdoors' theme, but I thought flowers would have complimented her dress better. She also had them in her hair, and a nice tiara would have looked better, imo. The bridesmaid dresses were really nice, though.Gil looked like his suited needed a good ironing. It was nice that he looked down when they kissed, and didn't gawk, the way Jb and Anna's father did.Jmo

Yes, Josie's husband Kelton is the plumber. Kudos to them for having real jobs, although I think Kelton works for a relative. I THINK Josie's salon is owned by friends, but I am not really 100% about that. I am impressed they studied for careers and have jobs Kelton has two career paths, plumbing and some sort of financial planning degree.

Tori said...

I read somewhere that the house the Dillards live in belongs to Dericks mother Cathy. Not sure if its true, but it would make sense as to why when he is no longer at Cross church ministry school he is still living in the same house??

Jaak&Jil said...

Sandi, I'm so glad you mentioned how awful Josie Bates' flowers were. Her bouquet looked like someone just pulled a bush out of the ground and handed it to her. You couldn't even see the front of her dress as she walked down the aisle there were so many leaves going everywhere. Just think how beautiful she would have looked if she had picked a bouquet that looked like the one Meghan Markle carried when she married Prince Harry. I did like the crown in her hair. Also, as a Project Runway fan, I was happy to see she picked a beautiful dress designed by PR's Season 5 winner Leann Marshall. Wasn't crazy about the bridesmaids dresses. A little too mother of the bride for me. Josie was a stunningly beautiful bride. And I think we all know where she will be in her life 6 months from now. Wish all of these fundie girls/brides could experience life as single women with choices to make other than getting married and pregnant within the first year, some of them getting pregnant on their honeymoon.

sandi said...

Jaak,I was just thinking about how the fundie adults all need some freedom in their lives, and not rush into babies right away.My own dd has been married 3 years,no kids yet,and I'm so happy she has the freedom to choose when if they want kids.No pressure from us on any of it.
You'd think that above all, every parent would want their child to be happy and have choices, but fundie parents do them in with brainwashing instead.Just so sad

Aunt Bea said...

Yes, Ross The Boss hair salon is owned by a similarly-believing man. IMO, this would be the only place Josie would have been ALLOWED to work. They were bending the rules for her and letting her have a real, scheduled J.O.B. If it were Fantastic Sams or Great Clips, they would have never allowed her to work there in the first place. Remember, they are still controlling parents who package themselves a bit better than the Duggars.

Willow said...

Thanks Aunt Bea. Kind of what I thought. She is probably feels "liberated" compared to most fundie women she knows. Does anyone know anything about the real estate company Whitney works for?

TXTN said...

So I have come on here several times to catch up since I no longer have TLC or UP and just have to comment. I am not a fan of the Duggars in fact as a Christian Homeschool mom (retired :)) I feel they give us a bad name. My daughter was Homeschooled starting in Kinder. and then at 15 started dual credit at a local state Community College, got her undergrad at a State University (graduating University Scholar, Suma Cum Laude, 4.0 GPA) Now is getting 2 Masters at a large State University. We used to live in Texas not far from Big Sandy so we had a lot of ATI people in our HS Assoc. and not all are like the Duggars. Many of these kids went on to become Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, Nurses and Dentists, even girls. Recently a lot of the families starting abandoning the whole skirts only thing, even some families I never thought would. There are lot of good HS families but yes there are bad ones as well. When we moved to TX we heard good and bad things about ATI so we attended the 1st level Basic Seminar, it was not for us, very extra Biblical and legalistic. We live in E. TN now and without realizing it moved just a 1/2 mile from Crown College, which has a great reputation here. The salon Josie works at is just a regular salon. Whatever the owner's believes the salon is just a salon. The Company Whitney is working for is a very prominent here. No one around speaks of the Bates family. Oh and most people around here speak with that accent and bad grammar - makes me CRAZY.

Willow said...

TXTN - Thanks for all that good info. So happy to hear that many do have jobs and careers. Kudos to your daughter. Yes, that grammar and accent is SO annoying. Especially with the word "weddin". Michael, Kelly and Tori are the worst I think. I have noticed several times over the years where Whitney corrected Zach - in a nice way pretty much - about his grammar but then she says "Weddin" etc. So funny. I know it is regional/cultural but still annoying to me. lol. Thanks for letting us know it is common in their area as I always wondered if they were doing it on purpose.

It's reminder time. The blog is about the Duggars and somewhat the Bates family. It is not about friends, relatives, acquaintances. I've had to reject several posts not directly related to the Duggars. Thank you for remembering.

The Duggars have one upcoming wedding. Then nothing unless

*one of the twins or Jason starts courting
*Jill, Jessa, Joy or Lauren become pregnant(I think everyone else have babies to young)
*Jana courts, gets engaged, marries

Jim Bob must be getting worried. Do they have family meetings regarding pregnancies?

Ginny said...

I know this is totally "out there", but I saw a tabloid story come through my Facebook the other day and just had to click on it. It talked about all of the Duggar fans speculation regarding Jana and Jeremy's older brother. He's kind of cute, and wouldn't it be cool if Jana ended up with something who is a bit of a "rebel" and doesn't fit the Duggar mold. He is cute and seems like a good guy.

sandi said...

Racer, idk, but I suspect Jb may tell them to get on the baby gravy train while they can.Jill and Anna aside,as they won't be shown.
Am guessing Jb may be hatching something new, since all is quiet now

Mickey2942 said...

Could the world possibly be exhausted by the overwhelming exposure of this family, who does nothing but court, marry, birth, repeat? Nothing new to see here. JB better get Jana out of the compound and courting! That is the only possible save for next season. Unless There are more scandals to keep up the interest.

lisa Mcginess said...

we need to have a question answered why do they keep putting out pictures of Derrick at school and jilly muffin dragging the two kids with food to see their father? this is not normal because someone has to work. Many people work fulltime jobs and have family and go to school. They need to think what they put out there and answer the question who pays the bills in that family.

roddma said...

I'm reading "Growing Up Duggar" on a book membership site online. It's bothersome how they say women should be responsible for how they dress. For a family who stresses modesty, they sure do focus a lot on looks and seem to be at competition. Jill felt she had to change clothe before church several times because Jessa rocked an outfit.Really?

Also, the way they talked about Grandpa Duggar not being a spiritual leader as the father is also bothersome. It never occurred to them that a woman may be better suited for it. JL Duggar obviously never bought into the extremes. I wonder why this attitude toward I'm while the Ruarkes weren't even religious. So far, they just parrot what the parents taught.

laura said...

Honestly jill really wastes IG.
Reading on the toilet with her kids in food coloring bathwater?
A pic of her and her kids when she forgot to put soap in the washer?
In class with her husband at school on a date? That was just weird. Etcetc.
No. This is not at all cool or exciting or interesting. Its regular and stop being desperate for attention it's super old and sad.
So weird that her parents wanted then isolated from the world now it's all TV this social media that shove down our faces.
And hana needs to go live her life not transplant from one form.of slavery to another-fundie 'hubby'
Someone give that girl a voice and power to use her freedom.

Aunt Bea said...

roddma: Great Post...Yes, the Ruarks were NOT religious; I believe a single Michelle before she met Jim Bob didn't attend church because her parents didn't attend church...so why pick on JL Duggar for not being 'religious enough'? Great point there. Jim Bob's father paid his son's Christian school tuition, didn't he? He did good things for his children and I'm sure he loved them very much. Jim Bob is an ungrateful son who shouldn't have been allowed to trash his father like that. Where was Mary Duggar during that trashing of her husband? I think the agrees with her son. She's a sheister too and a phoney.

sandi said...

Yes,I think Jb's mom is just like he is.She allowed his father to be dragged out of his room in an office chair while he was deathly sick. They didn't even have a wheel chair for him.He seemed like a man of dignity, who would never have wanted to be shown on tv like that, with his slipper falling off and the tumor on his head.
As for Jb,he seems like the kind of son who could never be friends with his father,bc he was jealous of him and saw him as competition.
If it's true Mary D. is the one who got them into fundamentalism, she must've seen something monetary in it for them.Tax breaks, free things, etc. She was said to be right there with Josh, calling around, trying to get free items for the new house.Jmo

Tori said...

Re the comment about Jana courting Jeremys brother. I saw Jeremys instagram post with the picture of his brother and a few people commented about setting him up with Jana. I don't think JB would allow that to happen, because I think he really dropped the ball allowing Jinger to marry Jeremy. Jeremy has had a life in the real world before turning to religion. He went to real school, college, played professional football in the US and abroad, he has had friends and dated. Jinger through marrying Jeremy and moving to Texas has earned a level of freedom she would not have had staying in Arkansas married to a more fundie Duggar friend. I'm sure JB was not pleased at the trouser wearing and knee and shoulder exposing. He didn't get a big dramatic weeping a wailing birth episode with someone being blue lighted to the hospital. I would be very surprised if JB would allow all that to happen again, and of course Jana might not like Jeremys brother (by the way does anyone else think his brother looks a little like Ray Romano?)

Poor Jill.

Mindi said...

The Duggar kids were never allowed to go trick or treating or to celebrate Halloween in any way due to their parents associating it will devil worship etc. So instead they said they celebrate the Fall season by going apple picking & having a picnic. This was the explanation Michelle's gave & they showed them once picking apples & having a picnic. So this is nothing new to Jill.

Re: The OK! Magazine article

He can't even answer the person's question! How is he going to explain (Or how has he explained...) to his sons why there are loads of decorations, costumes, candy, etc., all over the place this time of year? Hate to tell him, but celebrating Halloween isn't sinful in the eyes of 99% of us out here as long as you're not going around causing trouble. It's about kids dressing up, having fun, getting the snot scared out of them, and ending the night with a boatload of candy. And let's not forget that, at least in modern times, it's connected to the celebration of All Saints' Day, a Christian celebration, on November 1, hence the name All Hallows' Eve. But I guess we all know better than to expect any of this bunch to actually avail themselves of any real information. Just blindly follow the fundie line, even when it means depriving your kids of the fun experiences of childhood that you were allowed. Exactly the same thing Michelle's done with her brood.

If they knew the true history of The Feast of All Saints, they'd party all day long. It's supposed to be a festival to thank God for all of those who have attained a state of Heavenly grace. The candy and sweets given to costumed goblins are supposed to remind them of the goodness and plenty available in Paradise. The carved pumpkins are basically reminiscent of the horrible creatures they'll see in you-know-where if they don't wise up. Candy or creepy monster? Oh, good Lord! Josie singing "The Star Spangled Banner" on stage?! If it's anything like that screeching mess we heard on the show and in the video they posted on social media, then God help us all! But, as I said back when we first heard it, give it time and she'll be a "classically trained vocalist." We're well on our way, folks!

Over on the fan blog many of the readers are leaving negative comments about Josie making her singing "debut". Many are questioning the wisdom of the parents promoting the miracle child as a talented singer.

Tori said...

The show that Josie is singing in is being produced by a christian organisation called Freedom Focus Ministry, it is run by a family called the Myres and they are an evangelical group. They were at Fort Rock camp at the end of August and early September this year, and Fort Rock is of course owned by Austins family. I didn't have time to see if they were affiliated with IBLP/ATI but I am sure their connection with the Forsythes is how Josie got the gig. I feel sad for Josie, I hope she isn't been pushed in a direction she isn't suited to or maybe doesn't want, she won't have any say in the matter.

Mickey2942 said...

Interesting to look at the numbers and ratings of the show. They keep going south. Of course, JB has eliminated anyone who is potentially worth watching. Or they have eliminated themselves.

Watching young newlyweds parrot and discuss "tricks" for a happy marriage is actually quite entertaining...and the endless cherry pick bible sayings...
