The Signs That It Is Time to Kick TLC Out of Your House?

What do you think are the red flags that the cameras should be sent packing? Personally I wouldn't allow them in the door, but do these reality families have any idea when the downhill turn starts?

My offering is redoing the house to make it more filming friendly - blinds, studio lights, etc.

Since we know that cameras alter human behaviors, I think the cameras need to be booted out right about now.

Blinds and the dentist? It's time!

When your daughter starts flirting with the camera man. When your kids start mugging and performing for the camera. When you roll your dying father out in an office chair to have a birthday party. When you drag cameras to the dentist or the obstetrician. When you ignore your privacy in order to come up with a good episode. In other words....Duggars, it's time to pull the plug.

In recent shows, I've seen some interesting behavior from Michelle. I think she could easily be sucked in by fame & fortune. In fact, after the J&K silliness of late, I think it's just a matter of time before the Duggars go off the deep end. Or, should I say, before TLC orchestrates the madness. I had my doubts before, but with the addition of shows & fakety fakeness seen in recent shows, I think it's coming. Now that I would watch. I think it's the only way the children will ever have a chance a being able to choose their path in life.

When bad winter weather is predicted and you fail to prepare in advance because you can send a cameraman out in the ice to go to the store to get diapers. The crew becomes your personal "go-fers." Save yourselves Duggars and show TLC the door!

I think the Duggars should have not done this show, and stuck to the occasional special.

I hope they aren't in too deep with TLC and can end the show when they want to.

I decided to keep an open mind when their show started, because I know they are not like the Gosselins. But the signs are slowly emerging, and they should stop now before it's too late.

I am disappointed that the Duggars chose to do this show on a regular basis.

We all know they didn't pay for the blinds; the camera got more than one clear shot of the company name who installed the blinds. Translation: free blinds, free advertising. That sort of thing has been happening more and more often with the Duggars.

This is from a May 27th article in the Philly Inquirer about Jon and Kate:

What you don't see as the Gosselins conduct their "everyday" lives are the bustling squadrons of camera crews, sound men, producers, and assistants constantly hovering just out of camera range. This would be no different at the Duggars. They have become a brand for TLC and the intrusion of cameras into their lives cannot be good. I doubt they come out of it unscathed.

Anonymous said...

It's time to quit when you start having brand placement in your show. The girls are shown with closeups of their iPhones, Pledge, Campbells soups, Scrubbin' Bubbles, etc. When this happens you become a slave to the almighty dollar.

I think the Duggas have altered their appearances and dress based on being on TV. Gone are the big-collared, flowery dresses with shorter skirts taking their place.

**********

You know, I've heard other bloggers claim that the Duggars lie about the help they receive or have received from TLC. But I have yet to hear any specific allegation that has turned out to be true. While I'm sure that your motives are sincere, it seems to me that most stories turn out to be rumors perpetuated by viewers who want to discredit the Duggar's religion and lifestyle.

Since you did not give a specific example of the Duggar's alleged lies in your comment, I clicked on your name and found the following quote from your blog posted 11 March 2009. You write:

". . . And Jon and Kate are not the only family making money off TLC. At least they are honest about it. Were the Duggars are lying and saying they built their own house. TLC gave them a nice set of desingers to help them out."

This is a common misconception. The Duggars began building and paying for their own house in 2002. They were at it for three years (and about 95% finished with the house) before TLC pitched in to complete the final touches, furnish and decorate it in 2006. (The Gosselin mansion seems to be 100% TLC funded.)

The Duggars are, therefore, not lying by saying that they built there house. In addition to this, the Duggars have always acknowledged and expressed gratitude for the help they received from TLC. In fact, they broadcast this gratitude for the viewing public.

Everything that TLC and other sponsors contributed was documented in one of the Duggar's earlier shows entitled "16 Children and Moving In." In this one hour gig, the cameras followed the Duggars as they visited each room, while the narrator named the people who decorated and credited the furniture companies, etc. They even revealed the total amount of money that was donated in the process of finishing the house. Since that time, I have repeatedly heard the Duggars refer to this help (usually in news interviews) as a blessing to their family. JimBob and Michelle even gave an interview about TLC and their role in their new home that appeared in People Magazine in 2006.

Anyway . . . I'm not sure what other "lies" you are referring to. If the Duggars are lying, I would like to know. Perhaps you can give specific examples: What they lied or misled people about, in which episode or news program this occured (to the best of your knowledge) and how you know it is untrue.

:)

I can't find a time the Duggars have lied about what TLC provided, but I can about the Gosselins starting with Kate pretending to pay for the half an organic cow and the Ikea furniture. How about the beds for the tups? I'm sure we could go on and on.

I'm sure all of the TLC reality families have gotten their share of free trips, products, etc. If they're willing to give up their privacy to accomplish this so be it. You would think with all that's going on with the Gosselins now each of the other families would start to seriously think about what their shows are actually costing their families.

I just don't see how some of you can compare the Gosselins and the Duggars. To me, the only similarity is that they are two families on TLC. That's where the commonalities end. The Duggars were a thriving family before the cameras came around. They were doing it on their own. The Duggars may be living more "lavishly" now because of TLC, but they would not cease to function as a family if TLC left the picture. Their show is not their life, it is not their job (Jim Bob has explained his income) and it is NOT their reason for existing (a la Gosselin.) JB and Michelle would never let this get to the point that the Gosselins have. I really feel that if there was even a HINT of marital/child distress, they would pull the plug immediately.

Im not one to defend the Duggars on every issue. But to compare the Gosselins and the Duggars is just not right.

Yes, they definitely live more lavishly now. I believe it would be very difficult for them now to live without the extras TLC provides.

Anonymous said...

To Grace,

Perhaps both families are constantly being compared because of the obvious differences that the children live? Obviously, there are lifestyle differences, choices of ethics, and religious beliefs. If you cant see that there is no way a comparison can be avoided.... remember the media in general is a constant these days. Just my opinion.

Just curious!

lovemysons said...

You know, it's one thing to be jumping all over Jon & Kate. That situation is deserving of it. But the Duggars? This is truly one family that needs to be left alone.

The most absurd comment I've read on here is how the Duggars live lavishly. I can tell you for a fact they do not. They still sew their own clothes, Michelle grocery shops at Aldi's, and is not embarrassed to buy her children's clothing at consignment sales. I know, I've seen her in person doing so.

One of my closest friends is good friends with the Duggars, and she introduced me to Michelle. Michelle Duggar is a wonderful Christian mom, very sweet, and one of the most down to earth people you will ever meet. This show has not affected Michelle Duggar one bit.

And as for the house, yes, they in fact did take three years to build it. They got help from TLC toward the end of the construction process. So before any of you start attacking the Duggars and making accusations about things you know absolutely nothing about, do your homework first.

msrylee said...

I really hope that the Duggars are watching very carefully about what has transpired with the other "family" owned by TLC. Michelle has said on camera that they live and work in their house. We have seen the blind episode, where the lighting had to be adjusted for filming. As parents with several young children, are they compliant with labour laws in their state?

Sulmith said...

"This is truly one family that needs to be left alone."

This makes no sense. They're on a reality show. We're allowed to talk about them.

People who truly want to be left alone don't voluntarily expose their lives on television.

I would say the Duggars have changed somewhat since they've been on TV. I don't recall the girls and Michelle wearing so much make up on the earlier shows. Also, as has been mentioned they wear somewhat different type clothing than they used to - still modest no doubt, but different.

On last week's episode one of the girls was flirting with the camera man. I can't imagine Jim Bob condoning much of that!

Truly there is a comparison between the Duggars and Gosselins - both families have changed through the fact of reality tv exposure.

I have never heard them say they pay for this or that themselves. Just cause Jim Bob checked on the installers of the blinds he never said he personally was paying for them. I think he knows that the viewers know these things are most likely paid by TLC or from their salary they received from the contracts so why does he have to personally mentioned how the items are paid for?

As many have mentioned, the signs are there that the Duggars are slowly but surely changing. Agreed, they still seem to be honest Christian people who live their lives a differently from the majority of us. I guess one point I would make about Josh is that he has been so sheltered and is so naive that he may come to see this as a pretty easy to make money to support his family. From the looks of the used car lot, I wouldn't think an awful lot of business goes on there - especially not enough to support him a wife and children. Of course that's only my opinion from the limited times I've seen it on the show.

Hopefully, his parents will watch for that and try to keep him grounded in their ways, as well as preventing any of the rest of the family from succumbing to the its all about money bug.

Jimbob and Michelle have said that they have benefited from TLC. They have also given back and helped others benefit. On the other hand, Jon and Kate just now started saying that they are getting perks, where before, they claimed that they were still poor, accepted charity, and claimed to do it all on their own. The Duggars have supported all their family without TLC, until the last few years, in fact, their entire house was pretty much built.. by them.. before TLC got involved and helped them finish it up. It only put them finishing a year sooner than they expected. I beleive that hte Duggars and the Rolloffs are the most honest of hte TLC familys. KON is a scam..

This was the one that did it for me. I no longer watch. I really thought JB had more scruples than that. That poor man should have been left in peace, privacy and dignity. If it had been my parent, my family would have come into the bedroom as best as space would allow with the rest just outside the door and we would have sung there. Afterward, we would have come in private, or small groups to visit and say our special birthday "hellos". Sorry, but this was just wrong, parading him out in front of cameras.

The Duggars are NO BETTER than the Gosslins!

Michelle abd Jim Bob Duggar have allowed her children to be filmed for a weekly show, just like the Gosslins, and are taking financial perks, just like the Gosselins. Lighting and blinds, for their "work", just like the Gosselins.

The kids have changed since the first episodes, when the girls wore hideous matching jumpers with blouses with huge white Peter Pan collars and 80's big hair. Now, they wear name brand clothing, have makeup, hair done.

If the Duggars didn't want people talking about them, they shouldn't have entered into a weekly reality show about their family. In fact, I can't believe a so-called Christian family would sell their privacy like that, just for money.

A sure FIRST sign that you've officially crossed over into "TLC Land" is when you've just found out that you and you wife are expecting your first child and the first person you think to call is your camera man, so he can meet you at home and film you telling your wife. SECOND sign is when said camera man makes a statement expressing his own surprise at your phone call and then says that on second thought, he knows how "camera saavy" the Duggars are and that he is not really surprised after all.

Interestingly enough, when Anna calls her family, Josh gets on the phone and says with some disgust in his voice, "I have a camera stuck in my face right now". How hypocritical when HE was the one who brought the camera there!

Episode by episode, we can see the Duggars changing, just as we can see the Gosselins changes from the early shows to now.

The difference between the Duggars and the Gosselins is that the Duggars never asked for help, they didn't auction their kids to the highest bidder.

In Arkansas they were known for their big family years before the nation knew about them. They didn't asked for help from the state or others, they didn't speak at churches and ask for love offerings. Jim Bob and Michelle took care of them.

I may not like them all the time and I would love to mess up JB hair but I cannot fault them cause they do take care of their own.

Josh said on one of the show before he married Anna that the house belonged to his gradfather, which is belevable if g-dad had rent houses.

The thing about the car lot...my sister-in-law owns a car lot like that...you don't have a lot of street traffic to survive. Besides of he just sold cars to his dad he would make a killing. LOL

The Duggars crossed over long before Jon and Kate. They second they started their specials they crossed over. There is nothing particularly special about them, other than the fact that they wont use any form of birth control, including family planning. At least Jon and Kate were put in an extraordinary position (and dont go around claiming they asked for it because they went through fertility treatment. A lot of people go through that and dont get pregnant, and if they do, most of the time it's singletons. And on the rare occasion it's multiples it's generally twins, MAYBE triplets. So I'm pretty sure that they didnt sit there and plan their lives to end up like this).

But here's a list of times you know you crossed over for sure:
*When your oldest son expects to get his own show out of the deal.
*When you use "family trips" to push ridiculous, factless propaganda such as their trip to the museum where they learned about creationism and were taught that science was always wrong.
*When you are filmed rejoicing because your successfully brainwashed your child.
*When your niece comes on and talks about how weird your family is, and the only reason that a few of your children stand any chance of being productive citizens is because of said niece.
*When you turn to the media anytime anyone is pregnant.
*when you show your son proposing to a girl he'd only seen once or twice before in his life. And then proceed to require him to refrain from any sort of physical contact past holding hands.
*When you send your children on dates with each other in order to make sure there is no "hanky panky."
*When your kids get more attention from the camera people than they will ever get from you.
*When you decide to change something YOU LIKE because it makes life easier on the camera crew.
*When you have to run backup generators so that you dont miss filming an episode.
*When you think it's okay to risk other people's lives just so that you can sit at home while they go out and buy YOUR necessities.
*When you show your family grieving.
*When you show a wake/funeral.
*When you'd rather spend time in front of the camera than with your family member who is dying.

I think the generators were there for more than filming - like taking care of their children for 8 or so days - whether there was filming or not. We have one for when power goes out and we don't film (thats what generators are for).

Also, I think Josh saw Anna more than 1 or 2 times. If I am wrong - someone please correct me!! I didn't realize the parents PICKED the partners for their kids - I just thought that if the kids wanted to follow the courtship idea, they asked their parents for approval. Josh chose that path because he wanted to, not because his parents forced him. He said he picked Anna and then asked his dad what he thought. If I am wrong about this, also, PLEASE someone - correct me.

He's a car salesman. By nature, they are pushy, especially when trying to sell used cars. It's not as easy to sell a used car with 100K miles on it as it is a shiny new one.

I'm not suggesting it's ok, but I have never once in my life been on a used car lot and not dealt with a pushy salesman.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with expecting the older kids to help with the younger kids. Families are a lot of work.

Why shouldn't the kids help? That is ridiculous.

Farmers have always had help from their families. Kids that grow up on farms have a much better work ethic than a lot of city kids whose main activity is driving around, texting, slumming in the malls.

Life isn't easy. Work is required to live. What would we think if Jim Bob and Michelle waited on all of their kids? Ridiculous!

I really don't recall how often it was said that Josh and Anna actually were in each other's company, but I have to agree with those who say that it could not have been too often because Anna herself said she was learning about Josh's likes and dislikes and habits ON THEIR HONEYMOON.

For instance, she said that she discovered that Josh is a night person while she is a morning person. She said it was strange that she was up early by herself while Josh slept in. Josh went on to say that he "converted" her pretty quickly, though.

While a night owl married to a morning person is not grounds for divorce, I just find it odd that neither one realized the other's sleep habits until they were married and on the honeymoon.

How in-depth could their pre-engagement and courting conversations have been if they didn't even know something as mundane as THIS about each other? I have casual aquaintances that I know more about than Josh and Anna seemed to know about each other.

The Duggars have allowed filming in the childrens' bedrooms and also in the master bedroom. It shocked me that they allowed this exposure, as they have in the past kept private areas "private". Why are they now showing family members in bed?

Duggars, you are following a dangerous course if you think you won't end up like another TLC "family".

Wish I Had 18... said...

The Duggars have always amazed me because they are sincely simply who they are. Yes I noticed that they have a more up to date look, but that was a pleasure to see. It's not anything wrong. I have not seen the skirts getting shorter. When I am going to be walking passed the local tv crew at an event I am attending, I like to think that I look my best. I believe that modesty has been given a bad wrap and would welcome back in society. I believe that Grandpa Duggar would have been rolled out with or without the cameras being there. It showed the world how they were handling explaning death to their children. I was truly touched by the episode. The show over the blinds, well yes, there is an old time tradition called bartering that many people still use as much as possible. The blind company gets advertizement & the Duggars get blinds. If they use furniture polish and Pledge wants to send them some to use for free, and it gets that can of Pledge on a show, then so be it. Again, I wish that it should be like that more often in traditional society.

Personally, I have never even compared the Duggar family to the Gosselin family. Michelle has a couple of sets of twins. That was all. They raise the children with strong, traditional values and for some viewers that is what bothers them. The Christianity. Personally I greatly enjoy watching the Duggars. Of course the kids play up to the camera. Find ANY child that doesn't get a camera put infront of them and see what they do,,, most of them play up to the camera.

I believe that Michelle is a great example to other women that are AMA 'Advanced Maternal Age' but aren't ready to stop having babies. I admire her greatly.

For me, it's real simply. When I don't like what I see on the tv, I simply turn it off. My days of watching the Gosselin family, were gone a long time ago. (Maybe a tad jealous that no one gave me a tummy tuck, lipo after my last baby was born). But I enjoy seeing how the Duggars work around the chores, the bible study, the lessons and the buddy system. For my family, the Duggars have been very encouraging to us.

Give them grace people! When they ask you specifically for something from you that is financially or materialistic, then.... go ahead and get ticked off. But I think that you will be waiting for a while.

Anonymous said...

The Duggars are hypocrites. They make a big deal about their own 'modesty", making the boys look down when an "immodestly dressed" woman walks by, but then Michelle breastfeeds constantly during a school visit, which other people might not consider modest.

If they are so modest, why are they being filmed in bed? This is hypocritical.

They also claim to be Godly people, but have given in to greed and lust for money. When the desire for money supercedes the good of the family, it is the sign that the Duggars have turned into the Gosselins.
