This is not the first time this family has gone to D.C. It will be very interesting to see them in D.C. again. Their lad used to be in politics.

In the trailor, Jim Bob looks like such a hick when he can't even figure out how to get a subway ticket!

I wish they would stop dragging the family all over the US. Normal families do not do these kinds of trips everywhere (because we don't have anyone paying for us), so it isn't a glimpse into the "normal" life of a family of 20. I'd rather see their food preparation, home schooling etc.,

I wish I had known they were here, I'd have tried to help Jim Bob with the subway. I live here and they really are confusing, but so is everything in Washington.

Can anyone confirm that it is, in fact, true that Duggar baby #19 is on the way? That's the rumor going around but I wonder if there's any truth to it...

BoyMom said...

Wow, I hadn't heard anything about baby #19. Honestly, I love the Duggars and very rarely have anything negative to say about them, but I hope this rumor isn't true. Michelle has seemed so happy in the last few episodes and is getting to participate in more of the activities since she's not pregnant. I'd hate to see her have to be on the sidelines again.

I'm from a huge city (Houston) and have been to D.C. several times and I still can't figure out how to get a subway ticket and I am not dumb by any means!

Lovely episode
:)

I spotted an ergo as well, I think two? Jana was carrying one I think and Jill was carrying Jennifer on her back.

Enjoyed this episode and I also would have trouble with any subways being from out West. I dont understand how negative the comments can be. Being out of your familiar area is always new and slightly unnerving.

I really enjoyed seeing the Amish family. What a great idea! The trip to Washington D.C. was interesting also.

A side note - regarding the twins - Jeremiah and Jedediah - I noticed one looks like Joy's twin and the other looks like Josiah's twin. How cute!! I think Jeremiah was the one who looked like (and sounded like) Josiah. I think there is also a smaller boy who looks exactly like Joy.

What was helpful in this episode was explaining the route of their long trip, but did they go straight to Pigeon Forge after the ATI conference? I bet they are ending up in New York in July, when they had the TLC "shindig" with some of the other TLC shows, and then were on Huckabee while they were there.

I hope they have made it back home by now, for some rest!!! Looks like they had a great time. I am years overdue for a vacation, and I would have LOVED to have gone!!

I hope I don't ever have to take a subway. Definitly not a city gal.

Wish they had showed more of the Amish family instead of just 15 mintes. The Amish have always fansatic me and I've read alot about them. I even ride alot of Amish fiction novals, especially Beverly Lewis.

Never been to D.C. It's a dream to go there.

Anonymous said...

Come on, Jana and Zach Bates! Wouldn't that be so cute? I understand that just because they're around the same age doesn't mean they're attracted to each other, but I just wonder if the families have even thought about it

Anonymous said...

Joanna - have you ever read Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult? It's set in an Amish community and gives really good insight into it! I also enjoyed seeing a bit of Amish life on this show as I've only ever read about it before.

PS I hope Michelle isn't pregnant again!

As someone who rides the subway daily to get to and from work, I have seen a lot of families in my city who are clearly new to the experience. I try to help out where I can. It can be confusing to figure out which zone or pass you need if you have never done it before. However, where I live, there are usually helpful employees who can assist in using the machines.

It is very cute to see folks on their first ever subway ride, they get sooo excited about something I have come to consider as a mundane chore. It is refreshing to see people take pleasure in it and reminds me to stop and smell the roses from time to time.

Swissmiss150 said...

I'm very impressed at the way all the boys wore suits to the U.S. Capitol.

I work in D.C. and the usual tourist clothing of choice is shorts, a T-shirt and flip flops!

I take the subway every day and there are plenty of confused visitors trying to figure out the subway fare card machines. However, it's possible to buy cards in advance and just pass them out to your group. But I guess that would be too boring to film.

I've been watching for a while and I am continually struck by the lack of native curiosity exhibited by the Duggars - young and old.
For expample, although they travel, they neither appear to learn about where they are travelling nor do they really explore their destination. And, though the children often make statements (often highlighting their ignorance), we never hear them ask questions.

Our family wasn't rich, but our parents encouraged exploration and curiousity. We had access to public television & the public library; these expanded our world and fed our interests. My library card, was and sill is, the most valuable asset in my wallet; and, librarians my heroes.

What do the Duggars read and what are they curious about?

FYI this is the summer. Many families take vacations during this time. My family and I just got back from DC, Pennsylvania and Virginia (we live in MI). So how is the Duggar's vacation unusual in anyway? If you listened to JB, he said that they had gone to visit Michelle`s family on their way to DC. Sounds like a normal family summer vacation to me.

I work at the Capitol and saw the Duggars there that day. We were all joking that they were going to have trouble with the episode because filming and photography is banned in much of the Capitol. I need to go watch this and see where they filmed.

Not surprised they had trouble with the Metro -- there are printed instructions on each machine, but no one reads them. There's always a huge glut of tourists at the Capitol South gates trying to stick their farecards in the wrong way.

Josh drives me nuts every time I see him now on the show, even if it is only a short clip. He has evovled into an inconsiderate, egotistical know-it-all who acts like the world revolves around him. Oh wait...he's 20. That's how most guys I knew acted at that age. He has no business being married, let alone a father. Immaturtiy aside, I just don't think he's very nice. I do feel sorry for Anna. Because she never dated previously or has had anything for comparison, she unfortunately (or fortunately?) doesn't realize what else is out there. I personally find Anna mature for her young age and deserving of someone much more selfless and doting than her loser husband. (note: incessant physcial contact does NOT count as "doting.") Josh = least favorite Duggar.

Anonymous said...

Oh, and one more thing - as sweet as she is, is it just me or does Jill Duggar seem about 13 years old instead of 18? My gosh she seems behind socially and conversationally!

yes josh drives me crazy..his public displays of affection toward anna nauseate me.. like 2- 16 year olds trying to prove they are inlove.. they see you looking at them and they grab each other and kiss... blech...

i do love michelle , she is a very kind person and i just adore her... i hope she isn't preggos with number 19 yet.. she needs some time for her health and to have some fun...

do you even think she will have a number 19? he age is advancing and her uterus is probably pretty boggy from past preggs..... i worked labor and delivery and saw many women who had many child have uteruses that don't firm up as well after delivery and have a chance of bleeding.... that is a boggy uterus.... i wonder if 19 will ever happen...

i love you all and reading your posts .. i alos love reading about jon the douche bag gosslen and kate the maniac on that website....thank you all !!

I don't think Anna is mature as some others think she is.

During the episide last night where Josh and Anna walked in late to the Representative's Office (after parking the bus) Jim-Bob greeted Josh and Anna and tried to introduce them to the Rep from Arkansas. Anna, who came in the door first, looked like a deer in headlights. She didn't smile or offer up any kind of greeting .. she just stood there, looking and acting rude and clueless.

Maybe Josh (her "authority") has taught her to take the back seat like that - but still, she should be able to hold her own when needed. I'd expect that out of the younger kids, but not a 20 year old, college-educated, mother-to-be.

I can't imagine driving that huge bus thru the streets of DC, and I am a school bus driver so I am used to large vehicles. John David did a good job. I'm wondering if a special license is required to drive a private vehicle that size? We are required to have a CDL to drive a school bus.

I definitely agree about Jill. I'm not saying I don't like her, I'm sure she's a great person, but you are definitely correct that she seems behind and talks kind of like a child. I also would like to see a lot more of Jana and Jessa. I know it's their choices whether or not they want to be on, and if Jill wants to be on camera a lot, then good for her, but I would just really like to see the other two girls. I'm not sure if it's TLC or the girls themselves who orchestrate things, but it really does always seem to be Jill or Jinger. But if the others don't want to be on camera as much, then that's certainly their right, but I'd love to see more of them.

Anonymous said...

Apparently Anna can't be more than inches away from Josh for more than 5 minutes. Why else make the poor pregnant girl go with them to park the bus and walk how far through the streets of DC back to the capitol building?

Also, I found it funny that the Amish family in someways was alot more progressive than the Duggars. They speak 2 languages even! I laughed when the Amish mom asked JB if English was his first language.

Anon 8/26/2009 8:47 AM, I think the kids have been conditioned to believe their parents are very "wise" as they put it and that there is no need to question anything that does not come from their parents or their SOS curriculum.

I just wanted to add one more thing about this episode. I usually really like Jim Bob, although it took me a little bit to get used to him. I understand him a little better now and I really can't find any faults that we actually have proof of. I hope that doesn't change. However, I did notice one little goof - and its a small one - but when he leaned out of the bus to ask directions of a stranger, he did not bother to say thank you. He just closed the door of the bus and went on. Kind of nit picky of me, huh? Otherwise, love everyone. I was also impressed when I saw everyone dressing in suits. Hooray for the boys! Way to show respect.

I agree with the posters who express concern over Michelle's health. I really like her also. I am not worried about how many children they have as they can obviously afford and love them. My big concern is Michelle's health. I really don't think JB is pushing her to have more, I think it is her idea mostly. I almost sense that she has another need for the kids besides her religion. I think she is great person, however. I bet she smiles all the time, even when the cameras are off.

As far as Josh, I don't find him near as annoying as most of you do. I like him o.k. and I really adore Anna.

Oh yeah, regarding Zach and Jana, or whomever, SOMEONE else is surely at least dating by now. There are a lot of teenagers in these 2 families (3 counting the Kellers). Dating or courting has to be the number one thing on their mind, whether they admit it or not. I am dying to know who likes who and who is next. We want some dish!! LOL. Peace and love ;)

I totally agree about Jill seeming immature for her age!! Lately whenever she is speaking in the confessional style interview, I have to keep telling myself that this is 18 year old Jill and not Joy Anna... they seem so alike in the way they talk!!!

I haven't read "Plain Truth" yet. Haven't gotten around to it yet. I have seen the movie, or part of it. I have read infomation on the book. I'll check for it next time I'm at the libaray.

I do acknowledge that Josh can be quite annoy and a camera hog, but I'm used to guys, even men in their 70's and 80's, mostly relatives and men at my church, who act like Josh. They often act that way on purpose. I don't find Josh's behavior, especially for his age, so strange. So that's way I'm not cridical of him. I won't say Josh is my favorite Duggar, but I certainly don't dislike him. In some ways he actually is mature for his age and has good handle on life and spiritual matters, and in other ways he's definitly not.

I've always thought Anna dose a good job speaking for herself. I tend to just let people do the talking, not that I can catch a break and sneak something in myself. I know quite a few ceaseless chatterboxes who never seem to take a breath.

I keep thinking it would be cool...if/whenever Michelle does get pregnant again, if she has twins and has a grand total of 20 kids. You would think they would definitley stop there, leaving it at an even number, plus twins are more work, plus she's not getting any younger. They could rename the show 20 kids and DONE! :)

Grace said...

As for Michelle being pregnant, in their book, Michelle says that usually by the time the newest baby is 8 or 9 months old, she becomes pregnant again. She had Jordyn about 8 months ago.. so it'll be interesting to see what the next few months bring. I wouldn't be surprised. But, I think it's incredibly risky to Michelle and the baby.

I think it would be even cooler if they adopted two girls and bring the total to twenty. Yes, I do indeed think a grand total of twenty, ten boys, ten girls, is a neat thing, but like everyone else I think of Michelle's health and what another pregancy could do, especially after 3 c-sections (doctors' usually discourage any further pregnancies after 3 c-sections). Yet I'd love to see that number come through adoption. But we never know God's plans.

As usual I enjoyed this episode.I loved seeing the Duggars in D.C. since I've visited there several times myself and also stayed at the same hotel as they did.D.C .is a confusing city and I am from an even larger city.

I enjoyed the Amish family as well.It was a good example as to how similar yet different the Duggars were from the Amish.

I had to laugh at how strong the Duggar genes are. When Grandma Duggar was speaking about the home they lived in when Jim Bob was young, they showed an old photo of the family and I was amazed at how much Joy Anna looks like Jim Bob's sister (Cousin Amy's mom).

Johannah and Jordyn are still my favorites of the bunch. They're so cute. I thought it was cute how Johannah tried to use the Amish language when greeting them.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
At the very beginning of the episode, it was written across the screen that this was "DAY 35 ON THE ROAD". And they were just now HEADING for Amish country and DC.

I am not a "city slicker", nor am I a "country hick", but I have yet to meet an "typical" family that goes on a "vacation" like these folks do.

Visiting family in Ohio? Sure. Visiting an Amish homestead? Ok. Packing 20 Duggars (plus Grandma, Anna's sis, JB's sis and cousin Amy) into a large bus and hitting the road to help build a house, visit Dolly Parton, ride on a parade float, privately tour the Capitol building (and who knows what else future episodes will show)? For what family is this a "normal, summer vacation"?

Really, think about it. Does anyone know of any other families that do this? That can AFFORD to do this? That can take time off from work for 35 days or so to go traipsing around the country in their own bus? How many families does anyone know that actually have their OWN bus? That get invited (and GO) to visit music icons whom they seem to know nothing about?

I agree with the original poster. "Normal", typical families do not take these types of trips and I, too, would prefer to see the Duggars in their usual daily routine (which is what attracted TLC and viewers to them in the first place). All this travel and "hustle-bustle" is getting ridiculous and it is a shame that this family is allowing themselves to be "used" like this by TLC for the sake of ratings and sponsors.

frugalchicken said...

I think a lot of people are forgetting that the show is editted for time allowance-you may not see the kids ask questions or Jim Bob thanking someone for directions as things are editted out-TLC has to think what will be the most entertaining content and what can be removed.

Several mentioned that JB was rude for asking the Yoders if they used birth control. You are not looking at the context of the conversation. He was asking him about their church's particular belief system, then followed that up with a Do you ALL believe in birth control? question. He was asking if the church taught against birth control, not if the Yoders personally used birth control.

Although I am in total agreement that Josh is sometimes overbearing and annoying, I think we need to give credit where credit is due. In the last several episodes, Josh has displayed very caring and unselfish behavior toward Anna. He does appear to be striving to be considerate of her at all times. He's always mentioning how he's concerned for how she's feeling, he goes with her to every appointment, helps her with her exercises.

My husband and I were a little older than these two when we had our first baby, and I know my own husband was too clueless to do any of those things. He's a wonderful husband, and kind, but those things just don't come naturally to every man. I myself have been very impressed with how kind and helpful he is to Anna, regardless of his grating personality at times. The last two episodes he has also hogged the camera much less. The poor guy, I think we should all cut him a little slack. He's basically a nice guy who is trying to do the right things.

Anonymous said...

Of course there are a few 20 year olds who can marry after knowing each other for a very short time, immediately have a baby, and continue to have a happy, lifelong marriage. However, these couples are very few and far between. It is much more common that teenaged marriage (or very young 20 year olds, with no life experience at all) divorce very quickly. Not that I see Josh and Anna divorcing per se, but I think they are babies having babies.

The immaturity of Anna and Jill Duggar is sad. They have not ever had a chance to express an opinion at all. Jill seems like a little girl to me. I wonder if she is developmentally delayed.

nccalgal said...

I'm confused with the "timeline". It was said that two of the Duggar boys were left behind to help with the Bates' remodel, yet John David is driving the bus and Joseph was seen in the episode. They must have come back to the Bates afterward. When J&A were in NYC for the big "reveal", the Duggars were in TN. Obviously, J&A would have had to be back in AK for the ultrasound at some point. I can't picture having that done "on the road". We also know from other blogs that the family was involved in a TLC promotion as well. Does anyone know when that was?
I agree that is a lot of travel for one family both in time and $$. The fuel bill alone would keep most of us home.

Oh you're right, it would be so cool to see them adopt a few children. Another one of the large families featured on TLC did that. They adopted an african american girl. And the oldest daughter had 2 biracial children. I loved seeing that diversity in the family. Shows the love of children comes in many shapes, sizes and colors.

Who is running the used car lot while they are on the road? Who is collecting the rent from their rental properties?

And just generally watching over that big house, bringing in the mail, etc.? 35 days is a LONG time to be gone.

I would imagine they have someone living there so the property is not totally vacant.

The Duggars are so lucky they have not had a single child with a major handicap, apparently. I hope they don't press their luck. As the older children 'age out' and leave home (I assume), they won't have all that extra help that a special-needs child would require. And Michelle and Jim Bob are not getting younger, although I continue to be confounded by how incredibly young they both look.

Rebecca said...

To the person who asked who their tour guide was at the Capitol:

Only Capitol employees can give tours of the office buildings and the Capitol. Usually interns give the tours; this one was probably given by a more senior staffer, considering they were in the House Veterans Affairs Committee hearing room in Cannon. If you work for a private tour operator, you cannot have a private tour guide give you a tour of a federal building.

I work at the Capitol, so I thought I should clear that up for you.

Rebecca said...

Also, tours are arranged through congressional offices if you want to tour the House buildings, so it would be impossible for you to get the same tour guide unless your tour group's elected representative is Rep. Boozman. A tour of just the Capitol starts at the Capitol Visitor Center and is led by a redshirt, a staffer hired just to lead tours through the CVC, Crypt and Rotunda.

Anonymous said...

"The Duggars are so lucky they have not had a single child with a major handicap"

I agree, they really are blessed. It would be interesting to see if their child-bearing philosophies would change if that sort of thing were to happen.

Also, I'm sure Josh has no problem closing his lot temporarily for the $$ he makes while 'on tour' with TLC.

Approximately 50 days on the road in a bus with questionable "dumping" facilities, you'd have to shoot me first. I hope they at least pulled into hotel parking areas and let grandma and Anna have some personal time away from all the "togetherness"

I hadn't heard anything outside this blog about Michelle being pregnant with their 19th child. However, I was reading some stuff on their website that I hadn't had a chance to read yet and she mentioned this, a direct quote :

"I’ve had three C-sections, one with our second birth, twins, Jana and John-David, with our 15th, Jackson and with Jordyn-Grace. All the rest have been vaginal births, 13 of which have been VBAC’s. (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) We were hoping to have another VBAC with this last delivery.

She mentions another VBAC with this last delivery right after making a reference to Jordyn's birth, so this makes me believe she is pregnant with another child....something to think about. Maybethey haven't officially announced it becuase she is being gracious and doesn't want to upstage her first grandchild.

When they were in Pigeon Forge, they stayed at a hotel, and they showed a hotel on this episode and said they were staying there as well. I have taken two extended trips in a motor home with other family members, both less than three weeks, and even though we loved each other, we were getting on each others' nerves by the end of the second week and couldn't wait to get back home and out of each others' way.

I believe she is saying they had hoped that Jordyn's birth would have been a VBAC. I check their site frequently for updates and it hasn't been changed in months.

In response to the last poster, I believe that when she said "we were hoping to have a vbac with this last delivery" she was referring to Jordyn's delivery. That was "this last delivery," and I know they mentioned several times that they were disappointed about having to have a C-section for Jordyn.

Joanna said...

Most mothers are disppointed when they have c-sections because it's not as healthy for Mom or baby as a vaginal delivery and it's major surgery. Also, it just dosen't feel natural. But sometimes it's the safest thing to do, weather we want it that way or not.

I was wondering myself if Michelle may be pregnant with baby 19. When they were getting on the Amish buggy she was holding her stomach and said something about motion sickness. It crossed my mind that "motion sickness" could have been "morning sickness" :) Oh well, I guess we will know soon enough if she is pregnant again, but for now there is nothing official, just guesswork for those who watch the show :)

Didn't Michelle's OBGYN tell her during her last pregancy that she really advised against another pregancy?

Like the duggars said...

Cindi Lou,

Michelle's OB did say that she advises against another pregnancy, but they leave it to God, and if God wants them to have another baby, then so be it. And they look to Him for guidance and health! I commend her, I think she is a great mom!

samm said...

Yes, Michelle is a great mom but I have to question having more children when her Dr has advised against it. She has 18 kids that need her now. What a tragedy it would be if, God forbid, something happened to her trying to have #19. If the Duggars decided not to have any more children, I really don't think God would mind.

**********************************
I don't recall whether or not the doc advised Michelle to call it quits, but I do remember very clearly during Anna's visit that a crew member asked her (the doctor) if it seemed strange after delivering Michelle's last two babies, that now she was caring for Michelle's children, as well. The next question posed to the doctor was if she thought Michelle would have any more. Her answer was something along the line of "you never know" or "anything's possible"...hardly the answer of a physician who was dead-set against her patient having another pregnancy.

tha squirrel watcha said...

Actually, I think the OB said it was ok to have another. She made reference to Michelle being healthy & her pelvic floor holding up very well, especially for so many deliveries.

I too, believe that Jill may be developmentally delayed. I started to take notice of that when she cried hysterically, like a small child, at the doctor's office. I doubt they would disclose this on the show. (to me, Joyanna actually seems more mature. I think she may be gifted, in fact)

I get the feeling that Jana & Jessa do not want to be on the show (although Jessa seemed almost scared when questioned at the Bates house. Then, I happened to catch a snippet of an old special of theirs. Michelle mentioned how Jessablessa would set the world on fire and JimBob seemed to give her kind of a pissy look. Reaching maybe, I know.) Their lines seem to be scripted and they seem a little annoyed by the whole thing. I could buy that Jon-David is shy and perhaps has some problems as well...they seem to over emphasize how he could be a leader if he needs to be, Jana is just the take charge twin sometimes. Which I believe to be BS. I think they stifle Jana. She seems to be like Michelle, an organized, take charge kind of person, who can get things done! I have decided that she may be the "rebel" after all...

*************************************
Personally, I do not think that she is "developmentally" delayed as much as she is just "socially" delayed. She has been so sheltered in life (and from life), that at the first sign of something out of her "comfortable family bubble" and something that she has to experience as an individual (and not as part of a group), she cannot cope with the anxiety. Had she been out and about in the world a bit (such as attending school, dance class, playing organized sports, etc) and realized that other kids go thru the same types of things growing up and that if Suzy and Johnny got thru it, then she could too. I'm not just referring to the dental procedure; I mean her appearing tongue-tied and immature on camera, in general.

As for Jessa, I really felt very sad for her when she was asked at the Bates house about what her "role" in all the remodeling was and she sort of hemmed and hawed and then stammered out something about cooking and cleaning up the job site. In my opinion, she could not have appeared to be any more bored than she did during that interview. She could have lived THAT life back home in Arkansas (and in the comfort of her own large house with it's 9 bathrooms). I also recall the show "way back when" when Michelle said how "JessaBlessa" was going to set the world on fire. I hope that Jessa's spirit has not been broken and that her mom's predicition eventually comes true. She is a beautiful, bright and vivacious young lady that has much to offer to the world...as do her sisters.
