Tuesday, October 15, Engaging Announcement!

The Duggars are visiting some old friends -- the Bates! The girls go on a camping getaway full of swimming, s'mores and plenty of girl talk. Meanwhile, Jim Bob and Gil are left home in charge of the youngest kids.

The Bateses! NOT the Bates. When will TLC get some editors in there who know grammar rules?

tulip said...

We have seen JB "in charge" of the youngest kids before...what will happen if Josie has another potty accident, who will he hand her off to? Hannie? I think Gil is much more hands on than Jim Bob tries to act like. I hope Gil is in charge of making lunch so we don't once again have to watch Jim Bob slathering bbq tuna over slices of cheap bread.
I really hope Erin will choose a wedding dress that actually has a design component. She seems like a more frilly but elegant type of girl so the possibility does appear to be there. I'm sure JB will have a hand in Jessa choosing a dress (esp. since it will prob. be his first daughter to get married off), so I have no expectation there, anticipating the same old homemade plain white satin pattern. Hopefully, the least she can do is avoid his 80s influence, as his suggestion of puffy sleeves for Michelle's dress went over like a box of rocks.

Rena said...

I think the correct pluralisation of their last name is overlooked, just because of the spelling. No biggie.

sandi said...

I hope the wedding dresses are more mod as well.I thought it was funny when Josh said 'this isn't the 80's' ,when ref. to Michelle's dress.Um..admit that your parents are bit too old-fashioned? That was a first! :)

We all know that it's Erin Bateses' engagement, right? The three-stone ring is a dead giveaway for anyone who has seen the Chad/Erin engagement photos (also filmed), so there will be a massive time edit (2 months) that I'm dying to see how TLC handles.

Kelly said that after looking at "modest" wedding dresses that Erin didn't like the styles. They ended up getting something "immodest" at David's Bridal that will be altered (or she'll wear a shrug) to make the look modest.

tulip said...

This is great news-breaking free of the handmade Gothard gown! So here's hoping for something with elegant sequins and/or beading. I think some sort of a shrug would be perfect, like a faux fur look has been a popular idea for a winter wedding. That said, I hope they don't go the "alteration" route...what a disaster Michelle's dress was when they did that. I guess she liked it? I thought it looked horrible, like they just attached some piece of cloth to the "immodest" neckline. Not to mention, the style was just silly for a woman who's already been married 25 years w/ 19 kids.

Iva said...

A David's Bridal seamstress is making alterations to Erin Bates' dress.

Elvira said...

Yes, Kelly had that on her blog awhile ago. I'm not a big fan of David's Bridal so I'm concerned about what they're going to do. Kleinfeld's did such a lousy job on Michelle's that I don't much hope for David's.

sandi said...

I have more hope in Erin's taste and David's bridal. My daughter was just in a wedding using David's,and the dresses were just beautiful. They weren't modest, but they were really pretty and elegant.Hopefully they can come up with something in good taste.I think Erin will choose something really fancy, frilly, lacy or whatever you want to call it.Long and flowing at that.
As for Michelle,I suspect part of the problem was that they were just doing it for the show, and she didn't really care about the dress. Her heart didn't seem to be in it,imo.I think she could have chosen something very elegant and yet still modest,if she'd wanted to.jmo.

I'be been to many weddings but I've yet to see an "immodest" wedding dress. Is that some kind of code word for cleavage? Why do Gothardites see shameless hussies flaunting their sexy, sexy sex everywhere they turn? They're more obsessed with sex than the average 14-year-old boy.

Josh and Anna have had a lot of company lately. It seems Michelle and Jim Bob and the Duggar Gang have been traveling with Josh while he goes speechmaking for that organization he is working for. Total Christian Coalition we are talking. His organization is dumping thousands of dollars in Ted Cruz and other Republicans campaign war chests. Jimboob and Shell just can't pull themselves away from their baby. I wonder if Anna minds the chaos of the dugger clan converging on her household constantly. Jimboob and the family look like the new representatives for the Christian Republican Party traveling with Josh meeting all these politicians. Boob and Mullet always have to be in the limelight don't they. Josh and Anna are stealing their thunder and Mullet mustn't like that. If I was Anna I would tell Boob and Mullet to keep that big bus of theirs right on moving because they are wearing their welcome out at the Anna Duggar Home.

They want the chest and shoulders covered. I was watching one of those "Amish kids leave the fold" shows and there was a Mennonite girl on there. She'd been married and divorced -- this turned out to not be a real up-and-up show -- and she talked about how she had to sew a panel into her wedding dress so the cleavage wouldn't show for a wedding in a Mennonite church. It seems like nearly every wedding dress I see these days is strapless. Mine had sleeves and went to my neck but the part over chest (above the cleavage to the neckline) was lace and you could see right through it. A neighbor was on Say Yes to the Dress and she tried on a dress I thought looked like a negligee. But there are all kinds of dresses out there and at a warehouse place like David's she shouldn't have any problem finding something that covers her up that she likes.

hello said...

If they are looking for a dress to make sure she is covered totally they could achieve that look by throwing a white sheet over her with a hole cut out for her head. It should be purchased at the thrift store of course. Buy used and save the difference.

Josie on roller blades. They are way too big for her. Why don't they have the small stakes that go over shoes?

I loved seeing Josh and Anna with new friends who look like normal, non-Gothardized people. The husband is in the military, the wife in in the National Guard and she was wearing jeans and a normal v-neck tee shirt. Toto, I don't think we're in Arkansas anymore!

Anonymous said...

C'mon camping in skirts ? Can you say legalistic.

Would like to point out to the Duggar clan that feet/toes can be considered very erotic by some and since they do not want to defraud better stop painting those toes and wear'in dem flip flops ! Not very modest !

Really like Gil Bates seems to have a comfort level around his kids that JimBoob is lacking. Also he & Kelly seem to be more relaxed around each other.

sandi said...

For that matter, they could just alter some of that wholesome swimwear and make it in white,as a wedding dress. That would be for- sure modest.
When I said my daugher's dress wasn't modest,I meant it was strapless,iow-quite normal. It's just that these kinds of families would find that to be too immodest.

It was nice to see Josh and Anna host a more mainstream family for dinner - - and someone who was not a blood relative. However, I couldn't help thinking that this was not heartfelt. Josh (and by extension his employer) seemed to be screaming, " Look how inclusive we are! Look how much we love military members!" Over all, a transparent ploy.

Sad, sad, sad, the way Jana did that subtle shake of the head "no" when Mrs. Bates announced that the girls were all going on a camping trip. When will she ever be able to make her own decisions? Poor Jana. Free Jana!

tulip said...

Unfortunately, I too agree that the dinner hosted by Josh & Anna seemed a little bit like a show, esp. with them being a military family. I do hope, however, that it was more of a genuine get-together, which does seem possible as Josh & Anna seem to be attempting to venture out more on their own.
Gil has always seemed like a hands-on Dad, unlike JB who doesn't surprise me to be lazing around on the couch, since that's prob. what he normally does as he has had buddies & Michelle to handle everything while he pops in to demonstrate a tire change or cut down a tree.
Wholesome swimwear strikes again. Good thing Cousin Amy wasn't along for this one-over the summer she proudly posted several pics of her in a teeny bikini, including one of her with the little kids she's a nanny for her...yikes! Flaunting herself around like that in front of kids and someone else's husband? Surprised JB didn't ban her from appearing on any more episodes...seems like they're "accepting" of others until it might cross the line & then that could be bad news for the image...

I did not see Alyssa Bates or Jill Duggar on the camping trip. Jill, I can understand, due to her midwife duties. Does anyone know about Alyssa? Isn't she still living at home? I know its not a big deal - just kind of curious - maybe I missed her? Did I hear JimBob say that the moms were taking the 12 oldest girls on the trip? I had a hard time coming up with 12 older girls. I know, I need to get a life. Ha.

Leigh Ann said...

It didn't look like any of the girls were thrilled about going and Erin said she didn't want to go. But once they got there it looked like they really were enjoying themselves.

Judy said...

I was nauseated by the engagement story with all of the pop ups to make it clear that they are always chaperoned and only held hands once they were engaged. And then Michelle crying as Erin told the story. Give me a break.

Speaking of the military, I wonder if JB would allow any of his sons to join the military. Have they ever talked about this? I think Anna mentioned that their guests were friends they had met at church.

Nancy said...

However, I couldn't help thinking that this was not heartfelt. Josh (and by extension his employer) seemed to be screaming, " Look how inclusive we are! Look how much we love military members!" Over all, a transparent ploy.

==================================

So much this! This is how the Duggars started out, a bit funny in the wardrobe department, but otherwise, packaged as a "good ole fashioned 'American' family."

Josh and Anna are being packaged the same way. That Josh admits to TLC not touching his place of employment with a ten foot pole. Josh claimed that TLC is "politically neutral" sure...that's how the original opening to this show lasted with the "super conservative values" for so long. Not buying any of it, Josh OR TLC.

They're out campaigning for some Tea Party nutjob and Josh was present when his father compared Obamacare to the Halocaust (they compare everything to the Halocause). Don't let the warm fuzzines of the cute kids blind you to the reality that these people have NOT changed one iota; if that family wasn't in the military, Josh would have nothing to do with them. That's the only reason they got a pass.

Michelle is really trying her hand at acting big time. Kelly seemed so normal. Jill was not there which is good but I wish they had mentioned she was wroking or something.

stephanie said...

I've thought about that before. There is such a fetish for that. Gross.

stephanie said...

When the little girls were at the dinner table, Jenny or a Bates girl, had three obvious fingernail scraches on her face. I would have been furious if my girl had been scrached like that. I scrape, accident, 3 looks intentional. Rewind and you will see it.

Who were the two guys in the kitchen? I don't think that they were related to either family. You have to pause it when Jim Bob is talking about the lunch to see them.

Amanda said...

Does anyone know who drove that motorhome on the camping trip?

Anonymous said...

Is it me or did Gil say "you're welcome, baby" after JB thanked him for the donated items?

Willow said...

And, boy - does Erin have the baby voice down pat or what? She is the worst of all (no, I'm sure Priscilla is). Oh well. They all irritate me to no end (the ones who do that). Kelly's voice does not bother me so much.

More talking heads from sister-moms who have never been courted. They are just repeating what they have been told. Jana seems to be trying hard to stay sweet and be happy when Erin is telling everyone about her romance & engagement. I'd like to think the smile is genuine but would suspect that it's just from years of practiced sweetness.

Elvira said...

Jana has been shown driving the bus before. She probably drove it again.

Why is JB suddenly wearing all these unflattering polos that show off his expanding midsection? Actually I think he was wearing the exact same lime green with horizontal stripes polo in this episode as he had on in the anniversary show. Michelle looks like she's tanning, and why wear a black skirt with black hose on a camping trip? Even the girls were wearing jean skirts, some of them even jumping in the lake and swimming with them on. Modesty aside, I really don't know how they rationalize some of their clothing choices. Jim Bob swimming in jeans and Jana working construction & cutting tile in a skirt and flip-flops won't ever make sense to anybody. Kelly always seemed very genuine and natural while Michelle seemed fake like she was trying really hard to put on some kind of an act. It's all past the point of getting old.

Imagine...comparing Obamacare to the Holocaust. This is a stupid, ignorant man. He really needs to read some history before he promulgates all this misinformation to his progeny. It is inconceivable that he is in control of all these people. God help the future! He would not even be a blur on any screen but for his ability to procreate and most animals do it all the time. If he had to support all these children with no TLC money, he would thank God for help with meedical expenses.
It is a phoney world in which they live and they are encouraging others to emulate it. Trouble is, it is not so much fun when you are making minimum wage.

Anne said...

Irritated that Jim Bob decided to "nap" during the cooking of the meal that Gil Bates made for everyone one! Really?

Anonymous said...

I Like the Bates Family. They are down home feel comfortable folks to be around. There is no comparing them with the Duggers. I applaud Gil Bates for not getting mixed up publically in the JimBob Duggar brand of Politics.
Kelly and Gil and their kids are really sweet people in person. NOT PHONY like the Duggar adults and their Programmed Spawn.

MandySue said...

What I want to know is why they wear jean skirts? Maxi skirts/dresses are so popular now they could have so many more choices, cotton, knit, rayon. They could look so much more stylish. Why why why?

Meg's Mom said...

Perhaps the Bates don't engage on the political level that the Duggars do because the Affordable Care Act may help them. The Duggars have said they buy their own health insurance, but the Bates family do not carry insurance. I believe that was a blog before that discussed them using the emergency room for their healthcare.

Anonymous said...

Someone asked if JB would allow any of his sons to be in the military and had this issue ever been adressed.
It was adressed quite some time ago in one of those "Ask the Duggars" episodes. JB's reply was;"we are so grateful for our military, we pray daily for our military,we are so blessed to live in a country with a strong military."
Do you see the answer regardng allowing his sons to be in the military in this reply. I don't

The Bateses may seem more downhome, but they have the same beliefs as the Duggars. Gil and Kelly rely on Lawson to buy food and as someone mentioned they don't have health care for most of the kids. I feel bad for Erin and the other courting Bates kids like I do Jessa. They are expected to marry with hardly no time to explore the world on their own.
As far as the military goes, that choice should come from the heart. I hope they are given the option but do not just join from public pressure.
But yeah the Bateses and the Duggars are the same no matter how you paint them.

One thing I hate about TV shows is how a single line or two keeps being perpetuated. A throw away line on a drama I used to watch was continually being brought up by a group of the fans to the point of the ridiculous. I have a feeling that is happening with the Bates family over Gil saying that they had borrowed money for the groceries a couple of times until payment came in for jobs they'd done. Some how that has become Lawson feeding the family. I think Gil was simply bragging about what a good job Lawson was doing to have the money to be able to help his family with a loan here and there.

sandi said...

Yes,Lawson did say,"He's good for it",like Gil was going to pay him back.

Amen sister! Kind of like how Josh mentioned ONCE (7-8 years ago)that he wanted to be a lawyer, and no one on this board has ever let it go. By the way, kudos to you for getting an honest statement posted here.

Why wear jean skirts? Because a loose, comfortable, swishy skirt is DANGEROUS. They invite you to feel twirly and sexy. Wearing a heavy, constrictive jean skirt ensures that 1) ain't nobody gettin' in that business, and 2) they behave like "ladies," because who can do anything fun, like riding a bike or running or sitting cross-legged, while wearing one?
