United Bates of America

TLC DELIVERS MORE FAMILY FUN THIS SUMMER WITH NEW SERIES UNITED BATES OF AMERICA

(Los Angeles, CA) On Monday, August 13 at 9 PM ET/PT, TLC welcomes another supersized family in UNITED BATES OF AMERICA, an all-new series following Gil & Kelly Jo Bates and their large brood of 19 children, ranging in age from six-months to 23-years old. Audiences will recognize the Bates family from several episodes of the hit series 19 KIDS AND COUNTING, as they are close friends of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar's clan. Each thirty-minute episode of UNITED BATES OF AMERICA explores a new adventure with the Bates family as they manage everyday life in the hills of Tennessee-and the inevitable chaos that ensues with 10 girls and 9 boys running around under one roof.

This eight-part series begins with newborn Jeb's emotional homecoming from the hospital-and the unavoidable adjustment of adding another child to the family-along with the children planning for their much-anticipated annual Valentine's "I Love You Day" gift exchange soiree. Over the course of the season, Kelly Jo and Gil share their love of music and family values-from homeschooling their children, to goofing off while building chicken coops and whitewater rafting. Second oldest daughter Erin, heads off to college for the first time to continue her education beyond her many years of homeschooling and the gang goes to hang out with the Duggars at the biggest social event of the year-the annual ATI homeschooling conference.

While the Bates family makes the country life look easy, they aren't without their struggles. See how the family copes with the older boys working at Gil's dangerous tree-cutting business, and when Kelly Jo is hospitalized, can the family function smoothly without her?

MEET ALL 21 BATES:

Gil: 47-years-old, father and owns the family tree excavation business.

Alyssa:17-years-old and spends time on mission trips most recently in Peru with Erin and Tori.

Tori: 16-years-old and plays violin alongside Erin in performances.

Trace: 16-years-old, ready to play ping-pong, football or any other sport with his brothers.

Katie: 11-years-old, Kelly Jo's helper with the little kids either brushing hair or tying shoelaces.

Jackson: 10-years-old and causing mischief with his two younger brothers.

Warden: 9-years-old and always willing to lend a hand to his older sisters no matter the task.

Isaiah: 7-years-old and a great future catch with the way he compliments all his sisters.

Addallee: 6-years-old and loves spending time jumping on their trampolines.

Ellie: 5-years-old and likes to swing on their outdoor homemade swings.

What about Zach's courtship? Are they ever going to address it again?

Patrice said...

The courtship must be over. The Bateses refuse to answer any questions about it when people write to them ot inquire (I know, I tried it), and all pictures of the courting couple have disappeared. But in the Bates/Gothardite world, failure cannot and will not be addressed so, it gets swept under the rug.

Pictures and posts have been removed?

There are still picture of Zach and Sarah on Gil and Kelly's Blog

The "It's official" post June 25
other dates with pictures of Sarah and Zach
July 1 and 23
October 6, 11, and 21

The Reith blog ( Southern Raised) has a picture of Sarah looking lovingly at Zach in an Aug. 14 post.

I do not know if they had more originally as it is a band blog not a family blog.

This seems like a big repeat/copycat in hopes of the Bates earning a portion of the cash cow. Opening with Jeb's NICU stay is another version of the Duggar family struggling through Josie's preemie birth; More holidays celebrated as family parties in order to skirt around the "worldliness" in hopes the kids won't feel deprived; Homeschooling, cooking, laundry, etc.-how many more ways can we see the "this is how a super-sized family does it"?; Erin going to college?-wasn't she doing that last year?; We've already seen the Bates Tree Service in action, courtesy of the Duggars, and for the love of pete, how many more ATI family camps do they think we can stomach? All this, and we probably won't even get a Zach & Sarah wedding out of it. Good luck Bates, you're going to need it.

There are so many fibs and flat out typos; for instance, they don't have two 16 year olds. Trace is 15.

And Ering is NOT going to school "for the first time." She's been taking a class at Crown College (chaperoned, of course) since the fall of '10. I don't know if she's gone every semester, but since this show ostensibly started taping at the beginning of the Spring '12 term, that's her 4th semester (at minimum her second if she only went F'10 and Sp'12 and took off 2011).

Also, is Michaella REALLY a licensed EMT? There's a lot of NIKE! training and rescue she'd have to do; a man can't be there to save her delicate nature all of the time. Or the man might be otherwise occupied and the onus on her to rip off a man's clothes to tend to an injury or something.

Is there any way this can be verified with the state or their county?

Also, as other have noted, no mention of Zack's courthship. Given that the Bateses have scrubbed questions and a lot of the content surrounding the courtship on their blog and there's absolutely NOTHING on the Reith's blog (and no performances in TN for Zack to attend for the rest of this year), I think they're going to let that try and die a quiet death. Of course, during courtship, you guard your heart in case this happens, so "technically" pieces of the heart aren't given away, but if this is over, I have a feeling that, being human, there was pain involved that they'll never be able to admit; admission nullifies the primary goal of the Courtship model. They just have to pray it away in private and move on to the next one. IF there is one.

For anyone who doubts the Nathan Bedford Forrest pic, someone got a screencap:

That's why I find the name of their show so ironic. Their "American" heroes were actually deserters of said country.

I just realized I tried to send a comment through as anonymous...I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do that!

I wanted to clarify that it said Erin was the "first child to attend college" not that she was attending for the first time.

And that I would also really like an update on the courtship too!

"Judson: 20-months-old and ready to hand over the spotlight to Jeb."

Really who writes this??? How very sad, one only gets thier parents attention until the next one comes along.

Also: "Jeb: 6-months-old and a little trooper despite his medical complications."

Ugh ... another sick baby. Get the message from GOD, you're too old for children if they can only survive with the help of highly specialized medical intervention.

Patrice said...

"Judson: 20-months-old and ready to hand over the spotlight to Jeb."
I thought that was really sad too. So they are only 14 months apart...my first two were that age span apart too, but I never in a million years would have considered the older one to be "handing over the spotlight". So little Judson, after barely a year of parental attention, is just one of the crowd now, probably handed off to Michaela or another buddy, or chum, or matey, or whatever this bunch calls their sister moms. Ugh....

They can't even have their own show without bringing the Duggars into it?

Re: The formal press release. It said: Second oldest daughter Erin, heads off to college for the first time ...

Then in another place mentions she's the first of the Bates children to attend a "real" college. There's no mention of Michaella or Zach doing "college" courses online). Early in Zach's courtship, Kelly emphatically stated that he wouldn't be married until he'd graduated from his online "college" (most likely the courses that Gothard offers through Verity (IIRC).

At any rate, the pressies are saying two different things (I am referring to the one that gave the families' ages and hobbies/interests/jobs. I don't have a direct link and it's too long to post, so trust me on this. I believe it's the TLC press release, so anyone who's interested can check there. I refuse to patronize that site.

I'm just saying there are plenty of young mothers who have to have specialized medical help to keep their babies alive. I was 27 when my twins (first babies for me) were born 9 weeks early and had to stay in the NICU. So to this quote:

"...you're too old for children if they can only survive with the help of highly specialized medical intervention."

Carefully choose your words.

The most heinous piece of this entire Duggar/Bates religion-for-hire scenario is the title, "United BATES of America," which seems to be attempting to connote that these people, the Duggars and BATES, are representative of Americans.

To choose such dullards, so oddly proud of being uneducated as well as so cultishly religious, to represent America does a huge disservice to any and all of us who happily reside outside the teeny tiny mindset of the Duggar/BATES Land of Make Believe.

PATRIOTIC ROOM!!!??? Patriotic to the Confederate States of America, maybe. Henceforth I shall refer only to the Bates family show on TLC as "CONFEDERATE BATES OF AMERICA"

Maybe TLC should be doing some research soon on "NATHAN" Bedford Forrest; Stonewall "JACKSON"; John Wilkins "WHITFIELD"; Henry "LAWSON" "WYATT" and not to mention that the Duggars were going to name Jackson "Judah Benjamin" but changed their mind without giving a reason.

Compare some of the Bates' kids names to some of the famous Confederate "heroes" of the same name. Maybe next we'll see a Confederate flag on their wall.

Doug said...

"Coming this fall on "19 White Kids and Counting" and on "Confederate Bates of America", two of the largest families in America spend time with their African-American friends."

Maybe we'll get to see some reruns of the Duggars/Bates field trip to the George Washington Carver National Monument or the trip to Niagra Falls where the Duggars visited an African-American family along the way.

Seriously? said...

"Meet all 21 Bates"???

Why?

Like the Duggars: met one, met them all, thanks to the GROUP THINK these parents (Duggars and Bates) demand of their offspring.

grammar geek said...

I hope somebody on the show's writing staff will get the grammar correct. The plural of "Bates" is "Bateses". You can say the Duggar family (or the Duggars) went to visit the Bates family. But if the Duggars visit the Bates, the 19 Kids & Counting clan will only be meeting one person. Maybe TLC is bringing in the Bateses to phase out the Duggar era on TV.

Miggy said...

"Maybe next we'll see a Confederate flag on their wall."

I thought there was one on the wall in one of the Duggar-visit-Bates episodes. I know someone the Duggars visited definately had a Confederate flag because, not being American, I had to look it up.

I disliked the comment about Judson handing over the spotlight to Jeb. The little ones in the Duggar and Bates families have no choice in the matter. They appear to be the pride and joy of the parents until the next one comes along to fill the crib. So sad, but truly a reality for these blessings. JMHO

ImaFan said...

About Judson, they could have said, loves climbing and discovering new things. As most 20 month olds do! IMO. I'd also like to know what "mystery" novel is allowed to be read by Josie. As far as the other kids and their talents or likes described above, it all seems to be toeing the party line kind of things, helping with little ones, a future great catch, etc. I am a little interested to hear more about this "going to college" on Erin's part. Or is it really just College Plus? We will have to see. Glad they finally explained about Zach. I say good for Sarah!

Gil Bates just seems more and more self-important to me as the days go on. The Duggars have a link to Embassy Institute, featuring Gil & Kelly, on their homepage speaking about how to raise a family of 19 with no salary, marriage pep talks and other nonsense...guess what? Can't hear one lousy soundbite without being a member-imagine that. Of course, you could purchase the DVD at IBLP. ($$$)Hmmm. Also found an article on a Knoxville site from March talking about the Bates special and upcoming series. The author writes that Gil said he asked for "compensation" from TLC (conveniently doesn't use the word "paid") because filming would take away from work at the tree business, and because their privacy is compromised. Huh? Those are reasons to be "compensated"? I thought that's what their reality show was all about-just filming everyday life, nothing special here folks. If that's their reasoning, why would filming interfere? And privacy lost? Please. That's a common sense expectation once you sign on the dotted line. Sounds like Gil is making more excuses to appear holier than thou, and to continue to skirt around their initial declaration of not being interested in doing a show of their own. Oh, I forgot...It's a ministry.

Rudy Tecat said...

You mean the Bates family wasn't going to be compensated unless they asked? What kind of arrangement is that? No wonder Gil Bates is struggling to feed his family on the tree-cutting business: he probably doesn't know that he can ask to be paid for the work he and his children do.

tulip said...

The show would have to be a paid gig. Sorry if it came across as though I thought they wouldn't be paid, or didn't need to be paid. I just found it totally strange that the article would mention (and Gil would have to say) that he "asked" to be compensated (it's a TV show-of course they get paid), like they had to present an excuse to be getting a paycheck, or maybe, a sign of guilt. If they feel guilty getting payment (even though that may be their primary motive), guess they might feel it necessary to call it out. Jim Bob & Michelle have never really talked about their "compensation", and oh we know they're pulling in the cash. Wonder what Jim Bob would say if someone flat out, honestly and gracefully, asked how much money they're making doing the "show" (and he wouldn't be allowed to blow off the question with a joke and a chuckle). Probably come up with something about their finances are private or whatever. Maybe so, but since they exploit nearly every other aspect of their lives, why would they think they should get a free pass on that question.

Elvira said...

That isn't as odd as it sounds. TLC, Lifetime, etc., frequently don't pay for season one. They do it if they can get by with it. The families are sold a BS story about "educating" America and they get things like free trips, furniture by product placement, etc.

Toddlers and Tiaras doesn't pay the participants.

tulip said...

Interesting...participants in these reality shows may not get an actual paycheck for the first season-guess Gil got the inside scoop from the Duggars on how the game is played, giving him the opportunity to "ask" to get compensated. One more reason IMO these families are getting as much mileage as they can out of their "ministry".

I wonder how long it will be until we see all of the Bateses with iPhones.

Not sure why Erin Bates would need to be chaperoned on her way to and from classes. If this is anything like the ultra-conservative Bible college I attended, there are strict rules, chaperones and security cameras everywhere. There are areas on campus where guys and girls aren't permitted to speak to each other.

It's important for Christian parents to train their children to do right, but at some point the Bateses and Duggars need to be free to make their own choices (and even mistakes). Personally, I feel a Bible college is where young people first discover what they really believe. It has to be their belief, not just "I don't do this or that because my parents (or my pastor) say I can't".

What kind of American history course are they doing in their homeschooling? I'm not even American (a proud Canadian, actually) and I've heard of him.

totally agree....I do know as a parent I want the best for my child and it is hard when he messes up....but he needs to do that. How will he ever realize his need for the Lord if he is 'perfect'. Also, I really am sad at all the fear that they must live with....which is not God's will for us to live in fear. All I see are the required smiles...must be happy happy. But is there ever really any JOY? Any real laughter?

londonbridges said...

I agree that I, as a parent, want the absolute best for my children. At some point, I had to trust in them to do the right thing no matter if it involved post-secondary educations, universities, life-style choices and their partner in life. Even though their choices didn't always please me, I accepted them and continued to love them unconditionally. I trust my daughters. They are adults, and are responsible for their choices. I have never felt I have the right to make these choices. Love of God and a deep faith have been the cornerstone in our family. I have raised them to the best of my ability, but now it's up to them to spread their wings and fly.

Duggars and Bateses, do you just not trust your children and their ability to make their own choices? What would you have felt like had your parents made the choices on your behalf? You may not have married each other. Just some food for thought and always JMHO.

IS IT WRONG that I find the Bates having named a son "Warden" roaringly funny?

What a great name to prepare him for his Patriarchal role one day - gotta keep 'them' womenfolk locked down lest they get all uppity, believing they are capable of thinking for themselves....

Isn't Warden the one that wanted the 'jail' (ie-bars) in the house as part of their playroom? I don't recall..

Wow . . . really? I actually wanted to call fake on you, but after some consideration believe that such a place is entirely possible. What's up with the Duggar's not allowing their daughter's to attend such a place? I mean, is Bible college that defrauding that even the Duggar's won't allow their children that privilege. Is it that such college’s are not endorsed by Gothard and therefore are off limits?

Patrice said...

I'm beginning to think that the Duggars know their kids are not eligible for college, due to their woeful lack of education up to this point. So rather than have the kids apply anywhere and be turned down, and have that all over TLC and these blogs, it is easier to say that the kids don't really want to go...or whatever they come up with. Seriously, if they avoided all science, advanced math, reading anything beyond Bible tracts and Gothard, did not learn correct spelling and grammar usage ("Are's is best!"), well, there is not much hope for passing any college entrance exams. College Minus, on the other hand, requires no skills except for the Gothard Daddys to be able to write a check or punch in a debit card number. Give Gothard some serious cash, and voila'! Acceptance into the school of College Minus (minus an education that is). I have no doubt a Duggar or two could go to college at some point in the future, but it would require an escape from the compound and some serious years of tutoring to catch up to their peers who really graduated from high school.

Until Gothard creates a brick and mortar college, the Duggars & Bates won't be going off to college. And, just what would Gothard U be like?

ncgirl said...

"but after some consideration believe that such a place is entirely possible."

Yeah, there are some really conservative colleges. I have cousins at Liberty. One of them looked a college where girls and boys had to be chaperoned and no TV/movies were allowed. That's probably too liberal for the Duggars/Bates.

Too scary to even contemplate. Ridiculous dress code rules about hair length and mandatory skirts and collared shirts, pink sidewalks for the girls and blue for the boys, so the two shall never have to cross paths, and probably most texts written on a third-grade level with terms such as "laid it on my heart", "fellowshipping", and "purposing" in every other sentence. I hope that a Gothard college would never ever get accreditation anywhere; that would be a crime. Let's hope this never happens!

Looks like the Bateses spruced up their blog in anticipation of the new show.

The clown dresses are one thing on the little girls, but there are at least two girls who have outgrown them. Isn't Carlin 13?

Maybe she's still considered a "kid" because she hasn't gone through puberty and received her purity ring from Gil yet. *pass the brain bleach, please*

Sad, since she's the prettiest girl in the brood, by far. Even in some "modern modest" clothes, she'd be a knockout.

tulip said...

I noticed the new blog pic too, and the fact that Kelly is standing there hands free-even Gil is holding a little one. Just like the Duggars-rarely is Michelle seen or photographed holding one of the babies or little kids, while the sister mommies always have one in tow (ex. Michaella)...they each have 19 kids and love to brag about the fact they gave birth to each one, yet stand there hands free. Annoying.

Patrice said...

The Bates and Duggar families are basically clones of each other-Gothard is probably very pleased with what he has created:cookie cutter images of his ideal families. Wimpy dads who probably could not get along in a regular work place, with their only power coming from dominating their families, submissive wives dressed in turn of the century clothing, children of all ages being infantilized by not being able to grow and mature on their own,all kept uneducated so they do not question the "wisdom" of Gothard's crazy teachings. And now TLC will have them both on the air to inspire as many followers as Gothard can garner before it all comes crashing down around him.

sandi said...

What is going to happen when Gothard inevitably passes away? I wonder how that will change things...it's not like he has a wife or son to take over.I suppose one of the younger followers will take control of it?

Patrice said...

Maybe that is what David and Priscilla are being groomed for? They seem about as extreme as they can be Gothard-wise. I can't see any Duggars stepping into that role at any time soon.

sandi said...

Patrice, yes,I've thought maybe that was the case as well.I can't really see Jim Bob or Gil Bates stepping into that role..I could be wrong ,though.Seems Gothard might want someone younger to take over, imo.I guess we'll see...Gothard isn't getting any younger.
