It is NOT circular reasoning! ARG!!! its called radiocarbon dating. It is hard scientific evidence collection and data collection. Poor uneducated Duggars.

Diamonds are a girl's best friend. said...

How can they say this is reality TV? How can they say that the cameras just follow them everywhere they go? Apparently the Duggars are staged and somewhat scripted since we all saw a big huge billboard sign that said "Welcome Duggars" and the tour guide at the Diamond mine was waiting for them. Seems a little planned to me.

I thought it was a cure episode and it was great how the kids got dirty and no one freaked out. Cousin Amy was with them and I think she is funny. I am getting tired of hearing Michelle talk about her pregnancy all the time. This show used to bug me, but now I think they are just simple people having a good time.

I thought this episode was actually pretty boring...it was just them digging in a dirt pit. I was honestly surprised they would go there b/c of their feelings about the world being 6,000 years old. I'm sure there was PROOF that the world is older then that in the "diamond discovery center" but I guess they just thought it was more "circular reasoning."

Also I would love to see the French spin on the Duggars...now I understand why they don't like americans...if they think we are all like the Duggars I can't blame them.

One more thing that totally bothered me...if Jim Bob found the diamond he would invest in more commerical real estate? Yes that might be a smart investment but maybe buy your children some new shoes or give them the opportunity to get a college education...I think it's sad that Josh wanted to be an attorney and now never even went to college and runs a car lot...and I am sure the others will end up doing the same kinds of things

Dee Dee said...

Investing in commercial property increased their principal which, in turn, increases their monthly disposable income.

I see a family doing scripted trips....hmmm, now where have I seen this before?

Ho hum, that's all I can say. I'm already bored with the Duggars.

Cee said...

I understand that it would increase their monthy income but I was suprised he wouldn't mention something about providing more for the children...especially when they show them wearing disgusting used shoes

I love this show. I feel for the Duggar's because I feel like TLC makes fun of them. I don't understand their thinking, but they seem to be a nice loving family (as opposed to the money whores on Monday night) I would love to see more of Josh and Anna. I wish they would do a reality show of their first year of marriage ah la Newleyweds... Duggar style.

WTF is Amy doing there...she needs to go away. So incredibly annoying.

I thought the girls acted like they were bored out of their minds. Instead of dragging the whole family (including Cousin Amy---grrrr) down there, why didn't they take the younger children and let the older ones stay behind and enjoy the time off? They have tremendous age differences in the family and what interests teenage girls is not what interests 6-year old boys and vice versa.

I've noticed that Jim Bob has very little interest in other people. He wants folks to be taken with HIM and ask about HIM, but he doesn't know how to show or have an interest in other people. When he was talking to the professional diamond hunter, JB didn't seem to know how to stand and listen to someone else talking about the interesting life they have. But he would be glad to announce that he has 18 children, etc., etc., ad nauseum.

The "circular reasoning" comment really made me angry. I don't care how nice and wholesome of a family everyone thinks they are. They are closed minded and uneducated people. There's a difference between steering your children in the right direction and sheltering them from a rational and independent thought. On the other hand, I think it's safe to say that Jim Bob and Michelle aren't raising someone who's going to commit crimes and be a nuisance to society, but there are plenty of good people out there who weren't raised to be robots.

That comment circular reasoning made me annoyed too. In my own opinion I think the tought of the Earth being only 6000's years old is completly stupid. But, hey if it makes you happy. Another thing too is they seem to pull religion into everything. Why?

em said...

Marieblakey -

I totally agree with your comment...up to the "if it makes you happy" part. They are harming their children by teaching them only what they think is appropriate to their religious beliefs on science. So yes, in the way of adult choices to believe what they want, go for it...but they are RUINING the children's social and educational potential by sheltering them so much.

I hate to tell the kind folks here but I was taught creation at church and at home, but had zero problem seeing through that earth is only a few thousand years old business. Not to mention unless one of them decides to work at one of a few scientific jobs, it won't affect their lives all that much. I mean really what in most of our daily lives really depends on how or when the earth began?

If it "doesn't matter" I wonder why Jim Bob is so terribly invested in clinging to Biblical mythology even when it's thoroughly contradicted by scientific research. I guess his faith is a vulnerable as a house of cards and if even one little card is threatened the whole house might come tumbling down.

He looked like a complete moron when he wrongly explained carbon dating and then called it circular reasoning.

Oh, and Jim Bob? Evolution does NOT teach that humans are descendants of apes. What an idiot.

And if one of them DOES decide to become an archaeologist? Or a geologist?

I'm glad that 20th century geneticists weren't hampered by the Biblically-endorsed belief that birth defects are merely a whim of God to woo worshippers.

Jim Bob clearly is clueless about some of the concepts he was acting as an apologist for... passing such ignorance on to his children is just tragic to me.

-----------------------------------

I dont think the Duggars are too concerned with wearing brand new shoed. As Dee Dee stated, they are concerned with having more of a monthly income. THAT, in return, will benefit the children more than a pair of new shoes. I dont see how ANT of us can question how the Duggars manage their finances when they are DEBT FREE!!!!!!!! Everything they own is paid for with CASH!!! I wouldnt doubt anyone who built a 6000 sq foot house and owes noe debt on it.
A friend of ours does work for them EVERY once in a while..not very often. And of course one of the first things he asked JB was "How do you afford all these kids" and in conversations, JB has said, he completely plans on some of the kids going to college, but they will take out NO school loans..it will be paid for in cash.THAT is why he would (wisely) invest a found diamond in real estate. They dont go for the immediate gratifaction, they are patient people who work hard and wait for their hard work to pay off.

Cee said...

One of the reasons why they are able to have no debt on that home is b/c TLC gave them funding/help finishing it. And they can farm out their children for free things...I'm sure that helps them to not have debt. I was joking about the shoes in all honestly...all I was trying to point out is that it seems to me that Jim Bob makes everything about him all the time. He is very arrogant.

That being said wearing used shoes is really really gross and not good for your feet!

I think that if Jim Bob found a diamond, he should have it set in a necklace and give it to his wife. That woman definitely deserves a nice gift from him.

As for 'circular reasoning'.... I just think that's TLC's nice little way of trying to stir up controversy. It always works!

Though I don’t think that Jim Bob was very articulate in describing the circular reasoning of Carbon-14 dating and fossil dating (and this could be partly due to editing by TLC), there is a valid argument that would be evident to anyone willing to check into it. Creation Science is actually well documented with clear logic and geological evidence. Unfortunately, it is given very little serious consideration in the media and is usually portrayed as something purely religious in nature. TLC certainly managed to depict the Creation Science Museum in that way via their editing and comments by the film crew. In fact there are many brilliant scientists, many former evolutionists, studying and publishing documentation on Intelligent Design or Creation Science and the museum makes that clear in their displays.

Jim Bob’s explanation of circular reasoning was not clear. He seemed to be referring to the method of dating fossils according to the layer of rock or sediment that they are found in while the rock and sediment are dated by the age of the fossils found there. THAT is the circular reasoning he was referring to. As far as Carbon-14 dating, it is a complex subject and some good and thorough explanations are available to anyone willing to take a look. Try Christiananswers.net under the title “How accurate are Carbon-14 and other radioactive dating methods?” Here is a thoughtful quote from that page: “We must remember that the past is not open to the normal processes of experimental science, that is, repeatable experiments in the present. A scientist cannot do experiments on events that happened in the past. Scientists do not measure the age of rocks, they measure isotope concentrations, and these can be measured extremely accurately. However, the ‘age’ is calculated using assumptions about the past that cannot be proven.”

In these comments, Jim Bob has been called several derogatory names for disbelieving evolution. Apparently, if you don’t believe evolutionary doctrines, you are “close-minded”, “uneducated”, and “sheltered from rational and independent thought.” Well, I too, chose not to believe that the entire universe was originally compressed into something the size of a pinhead and expanded with a big bang or that the extremely intricate DNA strand came together by chance (which is proven to be mathematically impossible). When I think about the incredible complexity of the brain, or the eye, or even the simplest forms of life – a seed, water, a cell – I am convinced that none could have come to be without a Designer.

It’s nice to see a family on television with convicted beliefs in a Designer. It is sad and unfortunate that they are being depicted via creative editing as ignorant and uneducated. I believe that the Duggars have studied the science of Creationism and are not ignorant at all.

I agree with you.. studying something like a seed or cell really does inspire me in a spiritual way. However I just want to say that it really annoys me when people make this assumption that you have made. Just because someone believes in evolution does not mean they are not Christian or believe in God. Many, many people believe that evolution is God's design and creation.

"A scientist cannot do experiments on events that happened in the past."

Nor can the author that wrote Genesis have been able to portray the creation story as fact, because they were not present when it took place.

Clayvessel said...

Hi Krysti,

The author of Genesis was present in the beginning. God is the author of Genesis. Moses was His penman. "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God."

I know that many people believe theistic evolution. To believe that though, a person has to hold man's word over God's Word.

Krysti said...

Clay Vessel,

I will have to agree to disagree with you here. We both agree that God purposefully put us here on this earth for loving reasons. How he did this wont matter in the long run. In my opinion, it doesn't really matter now.

I watch the Duggers off and on, if there isn't anything else on that I'd rather watch. It's usually a very gentle sort of show to watch, even though I disagree with some of their religious ideas. Example: believing that the world is only 6,000 years old. It's willfully ignorant, but as long as they don't try to push that into the public school system, I don't really care what they believe in that regard.

Cousin Amy can be annoying -- she's a bit of a camera hog and her behavior at times is what I would consider too young for her age and a bit on the obnoxious side. Like when they were at that zoo/ranch for exotic animals and were feeding them. She started a food fight with the dried bread -- I thought that was needlessly silly. And Jim Bob is rather childish with his preoccupation about how many boys she has kissed? Blah - just be classy and leave that out of the conversation.

I do feel badly for the girls that they aren't allowed to wear pants, even on such an excursion as this one. How about take a cue from how some Indian women dress -- a long sari with loose-fitting pants underneath? But always with the long skirts? Very restrictive of their movements.

I liked the Duggars in their first few TV shows. Although I do think that the size of the family is a little extreme. I understand the reasons for it though, as long as they can support that many children than ok. I have only two children and I stay home but my husband also works outside of the house.

I agree completely. That is part of the reason, I think, that he wants and has so many kids...so he has an audience and little worshippers to hang on his every word. You can see when he addresses the group, that he is soaking it up. "Hey everybody, listen to me, I know everything and you all will follow me with whatever I say because I am the only one smart enough to tell you all what to do."

Did you see when they were at the house getting ready to leave...one of the littlest girls pulled up her dress to scratch her side (she had nice white pants on underneath thank goodness) the camera zoomed in on it. What is with TLC trying to always get child nudity on camera!? Bunch of pervs.

Maybe TLC will fund a trip to the Grand Canyon for this family? I'd love to hear the explantion Jim Bob gives to his family about this.

Parsley said...

Haven't they already been to the Grand Canyon? I thought that's where they went up in the small plane and so many got air sick.

jayley said...

yep, you're right Parsley., sorry there have been So many trips to So many places with TLC.. absolutely confused at this point. but still why didn't Jim Bob understand the first time around that if the Grand Canyon is estimated to be millions of years old it probably means that the Earth is older. Maybe unconsciously I meant that they need to return and talk to many of the well versed Park Rangers...lol.

I loved how the Duggar girls said they would buy a Hummer or an Escalade with a large diamond! No tv, my ass! They know at least a little about the "real world." That said, I like the show. They don't leave me with a bad feeling and they are genuinely nice to each other. Cousin Amy is annoying though. Why does she have to be in every episode?

They pull religion into everything because every thought, every moment, every decision they make is based on God. It's not something that they can avoid talking about...and when TLC went to them about a show, they agreed to it only if the show wouldn't try to edit out the religion. Some people with strong relgious ties see nothing wrong with mentioning why they do what they do. I'm not religous at all and I don't mind them talking about their beliefs. If the show makes youe people so nuts, why do you watch it?

I think it's ignorant to consider evolution and Christian religion to be incompatible.

The Catholic Church has no problem with the idea of evolution.
