Tues, April 6, 2010, Josie Duggar Sisterhood

The Duggars spend the day out and about in Arkansas' capital city including a trip to the Discovery Museum. And, when Michelle and Jim Bob get sick, Jana and Jill visit their littlest sister, Josie, and hold her for the very first time.

Do you have to be over 18 to visit Josie?

Anonymous said...

I'm so excited to see the older girls finally hold the baby!

Cousin Amy posted a picture on Facebook of Jessa holding Josie, so it looks like you don't have to be over 18 to hold her. We know you don't have to be over 18 to visit, because the whole family went once.

Anne said...

Jana and Jill are over 18. Jana is 20 and Jill is 18 so they should be able to visit her if they are healthy. Jill is rumored to be Josie's future buddy so I hope she gets to see her and understand all the special care Josie will need. I have a feeling Jill will be doing alot of the care when Josie gets home.

In the picture of Josie and Jessa, Josie still has tubes and wires and looks very, very ill. I sure hope she isn't coming home in this condition, because I worry a lot about her health and safety in that house of wild hooligans anyway.

I wonder if the *well-behaved* younger Duggar children will continue to "act like normal children" when Josie comes home, i.e. they will stomp on Josie's back, carry Josie down the stairs themselves, hang Josie from the staircase, slide Josie across the tile floor and have Josie lean into the open oven door while it's baking.

Just wondering.

Anonymous said...

When the whole family went to see Josie, it was at a different hospital that had different visitation rules. I was under the impression that the hospital where she is now only allowed adult visitors.

I guess it makes sense for Jill to be the future buddy, considering Jana could possibly be or get engaged soon, and wouldn't be there long. I still found it somewhat strange that the voiceover for the episode had the girls saying that Josie was THEIR baby, but after thinking about it, I realized that maybe they meant that she was part of the family- not just a patient at the hospital.

Do you have to be 18 to visit Josie? Apparently not if you are a Duggar.

Joanne, RN said...

I'm not surprised they visited her because they will be raising her. Just calling it the way I see it.

B said...

Wow, poor Josie isn't even home yet and Michelle has already assigned Jill to be a buddy for her? I didn't realize Jill and Jana were over 18, they have to be getting really bored taking care of toddlers and doing housework all day. That would irritated any girl no matter how they're raised.

That was before they moved her to Arkansas Children's Hospital, though, wasn't it? I don't think any of the kids have visited Josie (in the episodes so far) since they moved her.

I want to see them at the science museum. I wonder if evolution is mentioned in the museum? Of course the Duggars will just brush it off as lies. I wish they would teach the kids evolution and creationism and let them use their God given brains to decide what to believe.

I know at my small country hospital, they enforced the "no one under 18 allowed" rule from fall until just a few weeks ago b/c of the H1N1. If there was such a rule of no one under 18 at Josie's hospital, I'm sure that's why, b/c obviously siblings are usually allowed back to see the babies.

This was the buddy "teams" before Josie was born early. After Josie was born, reportly Jennifer is now with Jana and Jill will get Josie.(I 100% agree Jill gets Josie because of Jana's age and possible courtship). I think the rest is still holding the same. Remember in the last episode, Justin is carrying Jordyn around and he said he likes to take care of her because they are on the same "team".

I also find it interesting that Jinger, the one I feel has the most spark, spunk, and personality of the older girls is assigned to Johannah, who also shows the same spunk and spark! I guess we can tell who is doing most of the raising of the younger ones.

Team 1: Jill, Joy-Anna, James and Jennifer

Team 2: Jana, Jason and Jackson

Team 3: Jessa, Jeremiah, Justin and Jordyn

Team 4: Jinger, Jedidiah and Johannah

I'm curious too.

Because if the children are really that badly behaved and the parenting really that bad, no responsible doctor or hospital would allow her to go home at all.

And if some dim-witted doctor DOES send her home amidst the chaos and danger around every corner, it won't be too many weeks before we hear of some tragedy to Josie, her back broken from being stomped on, third degree burns from the oven, etc.

We soon shall see...

Re: museum

Here's the link: http://www.amod.org/index.html

It's a lot of hands on stuff. They have a green screen that you can change the backgrounds on, and things about the body.

It really is neat and you learn a lot. This would be a good field trip.

I would like to ask the Duggars why...Why do you believe in Creationism and not Evolution. Can you explain that to me?

I want to see them use critical thinking (of course it took me ten minutes to remember that work lol)

Anonymous said...

I really hope that Jim Bob & Michelle take Josie's condition seriously and not add number 20 to the mix. Plus, why does Jill get Josie as a buddy? Josie deserves to be taken care of by her Mom and not a buddy. I really wonder how Josie's health will change how Jim Bob & Michelle run their household? Will they be more cautious or will they act like nothing happened at all?

Why would they do that? Parents teach their children the things that THEY believe in, not what other people believe in. I believe in evolution and that is what I teach my children. It is my right to teach my children what I believe. It is also the Duggar's right to teach their children what they belive. My mother believed in creation and that was what she taught us, she never taught us evolution. As an adult I learned about it and decided that was what I believed in. The Duggar children can do the same thing.

Where did anybody get definite information that Jill was assigned as Josie"s buddy? Wasn't that just speculation earlier in this thread or the last one? Now I'm hearing it spoken of as a done deal and Michelle being condemned for it.

Celestie said...

If Jill is chosen as Josie's buddy, I believe that is a good choice. Jill seems to be the go to person in that family. She would probably give up her own marriage and plans to care for a sick child forever. Much like the faithful maiden aunts of the past.

I'm watching the episode right now, and I just wanted to comment that I did hear Michelle say "kids" rather than children.

Anonymous said...

When watching the part where Michelle is sorting the breastmilk, the camera focuses on the label of the breastmilk and it said Janie Williams. This is the second time I see that name being used. In a previous episode, as the nurses are working on Josie, her crib has the name Janie hanging from it. Did anyone else notice this? Does anyone know anything about this?

Anonymous said...

I would think that for security reasons, maybe the Duggars chose to use a fake ID for baby Josie in the hospital.

Anonymous said...

Janie may be her dr. or a nurse, the person in charge of her care. MD puns then gives the milk to Janie who is responsible for making sure Josie gets it.

I have worked in several hospital on the admin side and if a patient doesn't want people to know they are they tell the staff and a special code I'd given to that person.

Not to argue but if theyvwere that worried about her saftey why show her on tv and then tell the world where she was?

I was disgusted watching Josh playing big shot used car salesman. He acts like he is selling brand new Cadillacs, but is selling overpriced clunkers. I don't know what Anna sees in him. He comes accross as an uneducated, ignorant, cocky fool.

babysteps said...

I don't think the producers are reading this board because Josh was in the show again. Yawn. They could have show more of the museum trip. That was way more interesting. The way Jordyn looked at the tarantula was so funny. Did Michelle say she had a tarantula growing up????

Anonymous said...

I don't understand something. I'm friends with Amy on Facebook, so I saw the picture she posted of Jessa holding Josie. Michelle did say in the episode that only Jill and Jana could go because they were over 18. When Josie was at UAMS, she wasn't old enough to be held yet, so the picture of Jessa holding her was not from back then. For those who haven't seen it, Jessa is sitting in a chair holding her, so it couldn't have been before she was transferred. But Jessa's only 17, so if it's true that visitors at Arkansas Children's had to be 18, when did this picture take place? Did Jessa turn 18 between this episode and Josie coming home today?

Anonymous said...

I agree that it's probably a security thing. When I initially heard about the crib saying Janie I thought maybe the hospital just hadn't changed the name from the last baby or something. Now that the bottles say Janie, especially "Janie Williams," I would agree that it's to protect Josie. This brings two thoughts to mind - first of all, I'm glad that JB and Michelle thought of Josie's protection. That's great to hear. It also makes me wonder, though... if they are noticing the need to have to come up with a fake name for their newborn because of their fame, it would mean they realize and acknowledge all of the danger they are putting their kids in by being on TV. Yet they continue to do it. Knowing that they knew they needed a fake name for their child in the hospital because of their choice to be on TV and are continuing to do it makes me very sad. You would think this realization would have been a wakeup call, but it appears that they're already aware and just dont' care.

Jana called Josie, "Our Baby" (not "our sister", or something expected). She knows that she and Jill will be raising Josie too.

Jana held Josie more confidently than most mothers. It is clear that she has had the lion's share of parenting, since she wasn't in the least bit nervous about handling such a fragile preemie, with all her tubes and wires.

Michelle sure has a need to tout how much BREASTmilk she makes. How much MAMAmilk. It's like she is competing for a prize. Why does she need to do that?

Judy said...

The name/security issue in the hospital might be true, but since the Duggars told us when she was born, what hospital she was in, what procedures were being done and showed us countless pictures of her, I don't know what security is left!!

People should not be afraid to fully educate their child. Strongly include your beliefs but also fill them in on others. Diversity is wonderful!

If this is really what you believe when are you planning a trip to take your children to the Creation Museum? If you are going to give your children so much diversity I would assume you would take them there and to a museum with evolution. Then let them decide on their own beliefs, since that is what you seem to want the Duggars to do.

No one would teach a child that the world is flat because that has been proven to not be true. However, people do teach children their opinions or beliefs when there are not hard facts to go by. Some examples would be, Global Warming, Politics (right or left), and of course RELIGION.

I stand by my belief that you should teach YOUR children YOUR beliefs! Let's move on from this subject and only be critical when there is actually a danger for the Duggar children. As it stands now they are all happy, fed, clothed, and loved. Go Duggars Go!!!

I salute the Duggar girl who got a salad with grilled chicken at that greasy spoon restaurant. You go girl!

(That being said, the burgers did look yummy...)

I am glad the kids got a chance to go to the Discovery museum, that looked like a neat place.

It was interesting to see the other homeschoolers (including Jinger's friend, I think her name is Amara) visiting the car lot to learn about financing and such... although I cringe at the thought of Josh teaching anybody anything, I do think it is a useful thing to know.

I am looking forward to the Bates' visit next week!

Don't know why, but I have a feeling MD is pregnant with #20 already. I am sure that during the past 4 months of tremendous worry and stress that JD and MD have sought the mental as well as physical comfort of each other and we all know what that means. If my suspicions are correct, I don't think they will announce it until it's absolutely necessary.

Anonymous said...

What I don't understand is, if they changed Josie's name for security reasons, why did they film it on TV so we can all see it? If JB and Michelle hadn't put her on TV to begin with, they never would have had to worry about changing her name. It's because of them that we know 1) what she looks like 2) what hospital she's in 3) what bow she's wearing and now 4) her alias! It doesn't make sense. Who else were they protecting her from if not from crazy stalkers who know them from TV? You'd think that they would have told the cameramen not to show the "Janie" on the crib. It pretty much defeats the purpose.

pumpkin said...

I noticed the fake name hanging on the crib in an earlier episode. It is my belief that the family did this to cut down on any gawkers on the hospital staff or other visiting parents who might want to take a peek at the famous Duggar premie.

Also, it is not implausible that someone in the hospital would want to sell photos of baby Josie to TMZ or US Weekly or whatever.

I think it was a smart move to help protect their most vulnerable child.

Celestie said...

Looks like everyone had fun at the science museum. Michelle was actually interacting with one of the kids. Lots of iphones, (you could tell because they had different cases). The girls looked good. No body was dropped on their heads. A good outing.

Enough with the milk production, we get it.
Josie looks good, and it was sweet to see Jana hold the baby. Who doesn't like to snuggle with a little one?

Josh is now an expert on money management? That is good to know, in case I ever need some sage advice. Good thing that homeschooling mom prompted him on the rapid decrease in value of a new car, once it leaves the showroom, or he would have been sitting there looking all smug, with nothing to say.
All is well in Duggarland.

Kitten said...

I would think that for security reasons, maybe the Duggars chose to use a fake ID for baby Josie in the hospital.

While I might agree with you, it seems a rather silly precaution, in view of the facts: 1) TV cameras are all over her, so she obviously is "somebody," 2) the Duggars are there every day, and they're pretty recognizable, 3) the NICU is off-limits to unauthorized visitors, 4) the "fake" name has been shown on TV.

If they really were trying to use a fake name for "security," it seems kinda like Kate G's "bodyguard." Useless window dressing.

Anonymous said...

When thinking about Josie's safety and the use for a different name, a quote comes to mind that I heard on a Christian radio station. "What kills the skunk is the publicity it gives itself."

Anon 3:14 said...

As it stands now, the children are well-clothed due to product placements (Gap, gymboree.

Chili out-of-a-can is not being "well-fed" unless well-fed means calorie-laden non-nutritious food. Neither is tater-tot casserole or Ice Cream Cake.

The younger Duggar children are well-loved thanks to Jana, Jill, Jessa and Jinger.

I'd bet money that Michelle is once again "with a blessing" due around Christmas time.

The "Look at Me !" bus rolls on.

Anonymous said...

Re Jessa, under age 18, holding Josie...it seems that all rules are bent for the Duggars. All those little kids weren't supposed to be allowed in the NICU either, and People says they weren't...but they were.

So, it is really strange that there are rules for some people, but not for others.

Also, who in the world does the family think they are fooling with a fake name for Josie? That baby's name, picture, video etc. has been plastered all over tv, print media and the internet. Everyone knows her name is Josie Brooklyn and which hospital she was in. After all, that has been filmed and broadcast on national TV for millions of viewers, and then discussed all over the internet.

Those people make no sense. If they were concerned about Josie's safety, they wouldn't have shown her birth and her tiny, sickly countenance, with bows, for the past four months (filmed, of course, by TLC cameramen, who could have had H1N1 or other diseases).

Anonymous said...

It was adorable to watch Jana hold Josie. She definitely looked like she knew what she was doing, and she was very caring. This sounds terrible, but I have to admit that I think Jana looked a lot more caring and natural than Michelle did holding her. It's true though that when Michelle held Josie it was the first time she'd been held by anyone, and she was holding her in a different way to foster "skin to skin contact," but I still think Jana looked a lot more mothering.

The Duggars are the reason so many people are turned off by religion.

A lot of people tune in simply to watch the freak show.

Their life is an example of a less-than-ideal situation.

Thank goodness for the science of birth control that is readily available to women in this country.

First of all, I think Michelle already looked pregnant in this episode - or she was wearing maternity clothes for some other reason. Secondly, the museum and hot dog restaurant looked fun. BTW, MY comment on their diet is that it is not that bad. They show fruits and vegetables and etc. I just want to point out that I think some of those recipes, like the ice cream cake, etc., are special occasion dishes. Doesn't every family have their special recipes that they make for parties and share with others? I have lots of cookbooks and boxes of recipes that I don't make every day. I personally just don't care what they eat. I just don't see the problem with JB fixing tuna for his kids. I guess I'm weird. My kids were raised on it. Its food that keeps them from being hungry. JMO. Why should they have to be perfect every day? Remember, small growing children need a little more for lunch than yogurt and a grape, right?

That said, there are many things that I DO disagree with - things that are so much more important than what the girls fixed the younger kids for lunch (sorry). One thought I had is - how will JB and M feel if NONE of their girls have large families for themselves because they are just too burned out to follow the family belief system? Just a thought. I mean, with the money JB and M have now and if they didn't have those older girls, I bet you anything they would hire some help. They would not be doing it themselves if it wasn't for the 4 older girls and grandma. That is always the thing that makes me the maddest. The girls have to work so hard when there is another answer since there is more money coming in. I'll be quiet now. Thanks for letting me vent.

Peace and love.

I believe in a People article JB and Michelle said they are abstinent for 80 days after the birth of a girl and 40 after a boy, so while it's possible they're pregnant already, it's a bit unlikely. Although when it comes to the Duggars, who knows! I hope they realize this little one needs a tremendous amount of attention and focus on her and the other little girls (and boys) that haven't gotten much lately.

so i looked back at the shot referenced by another person to figure out what I think about this name changing thing. Well, I have to admit, in the close-up shot of the milk, it says 12/10/09 Williams, Janie. Interesting!

Ok, but what I find more interesting is that the camera man and editors have now allowed the whole world to know what drugs Michelle Duggar is taking as well, it is written right on the label! Looks she took 800mg of ibuprofen one day and 200mg on another. Ok, so probably no one is upset by the world knowing she takes advil BUT then it also shows she takes 30mg of nifedipine daily as well, a drug used to control hypertension and protect heart health. This is definitely an invasion of her right to privacy and I wonder if they realize this was shown...

I was struck by how Jana shielded little Josie's face from the bright camera lights. I never saw Michelle think of anything like that (she was too busy shoving a too tight, too big bow on that poor baby's head, while she still had tubes and wires coming out of that head).

Michelle may have delivered 19 kids, but Jana and Jill are much more naturally motherly, and seem to care more about all the kids than their own mother.

The Duggar family is a lot of things, but the perfect ideal is not one of them. They have many flaws as do we all. I really don't think they are any where near perfect and I think they would agree with me.

My kids also call their little sister "our baby" (as opposed to "our sister") too. She belongs to all of us and they are proud of that!

I don't think Josh was acting as though he were selling anything super special at his used car lot. Somebody needs to sell used cars, especially in this economy, and he's just doing what he needs to do to support his family. I think he just has a naturally confident, outgoing personality.

I don't think it was for security reasons, but just that they didn't want anyone but themselves taking pictures and making money off of the baby.

Pumpkin, with the greatest respect to you, IMO a smarter move to protect the Duggar's most vulnerable blessing would have been to not film her at all. If the Duggars were not contracted by TLC, we would probably never have known about Josie's precarious status and location, nor the location of the other blessings.

* * *

Considering they are planning on attending a conference out of state in about 2 months time, I'd say they don't realize this at all. With all their talk about how precious their little blessing is, they have a cavalier attitude toward Josie's special needs. What a way to treat their "gift from God."

Anonymous said...

It cracked me up that Josh referred to the visiting homeschooled group as "young people."

Does he think he is not a "young person?" Does he believe that because he is (barely) out of his teens and married, he is old and wizened?

"Ok, so probably no one is upset by the world knowing she takes advil BUT then it also shows she takes 30mg of nifedipine daily as well, a drug used to control hypertension and protect heart health."

More than likely she is on a maintenance dose of a hypertension drug because of the preeclampsia. If she had the more severe version, as I suspect she did, her blood pressure will be elevated for several weeks, even months afterward.

If Michelle were already pregnant, it wouldn't be showing yet. They don't believe in resuming relations until 80 days after the birth of a girl, so she can't have been pregnant for that long if she is at all.

Should she even be breast feeding while having to be on medication? Won't it be passed on to Josie? Or maybe these particular drugs aren't maybe?

Josh and used cars go together like bologne and cheese. IMO he's full of both. In general, his cars are old and have very high mileage.

Used cars are fine, I just wish someone in the group had asked him some harder questions...
1) How does he calculate the prices for his cars?
2) Isn't it risky to purchase an old car with very high mileage because the liklihood of a costly (engine block, cooling system, catalytic converter - pollution control) system failure is higher? And, if such a failure occurs, the cost of repairs may rival the cost for the vehicle due to the availablity of parts, etc.?
3) Is it not reasonable to consider a higher-priced, lower mileage car to mitigate such a risk?

Although he's memorized some stats and spouts with authority, I wonder if he were asked some of the questions above he could argue the merits or faults of his answers. IMO, that's the difference betwenn rote learning and a depth of understanding.

He's a rote guy. I don't care if his homeschool curiculum offers physics, chemistry and calculus - I doubt he took them.

Anonymous said...

I do think using an alias for Josie was for security reasons at all levels (hospital staff, other visitors, insurance companies...anyone who has access to her or her chart). It's hard to believe that they did not think to blur it out during editing.

IMO, they (the Duggars & TLC) pay lip service to the whole privacy issue but at the end of the day they really can't be bothered with the details unless or until something bad happens (a stalker, paparazzi getting too close), at which time they will feign ignorance and act as though they never believed it could happen to them.

Nicole said...

There are relatively few medications that are harmful enough to a baby in breastmilk to require the mother to not breastfeed. The two that Michelle is apparently taking (or took) are safe to take while nursing. She probably isn't taking the ibuprofen anymore at all.

She quite likely isn't even taking the blood pressure medication as well. I wonder if that label was from an early pumping. Of course she may have developed a chronic hypertension but that is not a "first choice" medication if that were the case.
