I think it's a typo..it should be "Pies"...as the younger boys make rehearsal "desserts"...those kids are too involved with sugar if you ask me...or starving..maybe both.

The Duggars follow dietary restrictions from the Old Testament. They mentioned this during a Duggar Q&A from a few seasons back.

Tricia Whitney said...

So if they follow dietary restrictions from the Old Testament, do they have a Kosher kitchen? How do they do that? This family gets more bizarre by the show. I also read on their blog that JB and Michelle abstain from relations 100 days after a boy and 40 days after a boy as per Old Testament instructions. I study the Bible and for the life of me can't find this gem. Anyone, anyone?

I don't know about a Kosher kitchen,as far as I can tell though, they just avoid certain foods,as per Old Testament instruction.
Heart In FL,thx for that, that made me laugh. My cousin had a pig-pickin' for her wedding, and I thought surely, the Duggars are not going to do that! LOL

From the Old Testament:
Leviticus 12 New International Version (NIV)

Purification After Childbirth
12 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Say to the Israelites: ‘A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her monthly period. 3 On the eighth day the boy is to be circumcised. 4 Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the days of her purification are over. 5 If she gives birth to a daughter, for two weeks the woman will be unclean, as during her period. Then she must wait sixty-six days to be purified from her bleeding.

A very good point was made here about the Duggar pork-aversion as per the bible: since eating pork is forbidden in the OT, and they follow that passage, why is it that they mix meat and dairy? That also is a forbidden passage in the OT, isn't it? Why is that OK? They really need to address these "pick and choose" belief things, as the contradictions are becoming more and more obvious...

Beth said...

I wonder if they choose to follow those items from Leviticus (the 'unpure' days after childbirth & no pork) if they follow the rest? In fact we know they don't as some of the things include not trimming your beard (JB is clean shaven) and not cutting the sides of your hair (we all know how JB is about his hair), there are a few other crazy things in Leviticus (like the one about fabric) and then of course a lot of common sense things, I don't know if anyone's seen/read The Girl w/the Dragon Tattoo but the killer in that was killing based on interpretations in Leviticus (was a good book), here's a link re: rules in Leviticus if anyone's interested...

re: my last post on Leviticus, I just noticed one of the 'rules' is no selling of lands permanently... wouldn't this go against Duggars buying & flipping properties to make money? lol just think it's interesting when they push one thing in one section of the Bible and don't remotely follow others in the same section (would be at least different if in different part of the Bible as those are written in different times and by different people)

Regarding the Duggars' opinion on sexual abstinence after the birth of a child, see
https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus+12

As for dietary rules, they are found in Leviticus, Chapter 11. See
https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Leviticus+12

Note that there is no requirement, per se, to keep what modern Jews would consider a kosher kitchen; separate serving utensils and tableware for meat dishes, milk dishes, or parve (foods that contain neither meat nor milk), separate sinks for washing fleishik keilim and milchik keilim, and a special set of serving vessels and tableware just for Passover. My Isreali Jewish friends living in Israel do not take the Kashrut to this level of differentiation--this seems to be a purely Western Jewish custom.

See ww.kosherquest.org/book.php?id=SOME_GENERAL_LAWS_OF_KASHRUS.htm for more information.

Frankly, I doubt the Duggars have the attention span to deal with the complexities of Kashrut, not to mention that having the kids standing or sitting on surfaces where food is prepared, licking and walking on tables where food is served and eaten, and eating food that has been dropped on the floor would be absolutely forbidden if they were observing the Kashrut as it is explained in Leviticus or practiced by observant US/Western Hemisphere Jews.

In response to the posts about leviticus and not eating pork: I thought Christians didn't have to follow all the "rules" of the old testament because of Jesus? Do the Duggars follow all the Jewish teachings, because isn't that what the old testament is?

My Dad would have loved to poke fum at the Duggars. He knew his Bible from cover to cover , but never tried to ram it down anyone's throat. I'd imagine when it comes to the Duggar's following one passage and ignoring a bunch of others, my Dad would say" Oh, they tore that page out of the Bible. Lol

MCL said...

Most Christians I know do not follow Old Testament law but some pick a law or two that they will follow(such as not eating pork or shellfish). But that is a personal preference not a requirement. I think Gothard promoted some of these rules about abstinence after childbirth because he is a creepy virgin bachelor who gets his kicks getting involved in other people's sex lives.

Remember Josh's wedding was hosted by the Kellers and their church. They were doing what was normal for them. The wedding was held later in the day I think and the church ladies donated almost everything.

Convenient that a camera was there when Ben went to the jewelry store and forgot the ring. Back at the ranch a camera just happened to be there trained on Jonger when her Ben called to ask her to bring the ring. B.S. Alarms going off. It is all staged. And there are people who think it is all real.

I'm surprised that jinger was allowed to bring Ben the ring without having another person with her.

What's up with none of the girls knowing the name of a flower other than a rose? Another example that the members of this family are 'missing' much common, everyday knowledge that most people acquire from day-to-day life.

I find it disturbing that all the younger kids usually talk about Babies & Marriage on their camera talks - not much of anything else.

Josie was humming Here Comes The Bride in the flower shop. Hasn't Josie only been to ONE wedding - Jill's?

I remember growing up focusing on getting good grades in school, having time with friends, looking forward to Birthdays, Christmas, etc. Other five to ten year olds I know talk about everything BUT babies and getting married.

Jill didn't go help Jessa pick out her wedding dress.....I didn't see her at the florist....and come to think of it why wasn't she there when Jessa's bridesmaid dresses were handed out. Jill loves to be front and center when she hears there is a camera and she obviously knows when they are filming so she could find some excuse to show up and be a talking head. Someone tried to explain that she might have been sick on the dress shopping trip. However as another pointed out she supposedly was doing flashcards at that time with James.

Anonymous said...

Why didn't Jill go wedding dress shopping???? Too ill for Jessa but not to ill to drive Derrick to and from work!

I was in Arkansas this past weekend. Very cold, ice and snowy.

My Aunt lives about 10 minutes from the Duggar's so we always drive by. Sure enough the clan was out sledding on campaign signs.

We also got take out from Market Place where Jessa was proposed to. It has been the location of several TLC shoots. I asked the girl ringing me up what that was like and she said, a production assistant calls ahead and they usually shoot around 3:00 in the afternoon. It is not that big of a restaurant. Every one signs releases who will be in the shot. The restaurant posts a sign on the door saying filming on premises. If you wish to be out of a shot, please let your server know.

They also don't pay for their food.

Thought y'all might light this tidbit of useless info.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed how close Ben and Jinger seem to be? I think he has more chemistry with Jinger than with Jessa. Maybe it's just because Jinger seems to have more patience and understanding when it comes to Ben...

It's interesting that Jinger didn't need a chaperone to take the ring to Ben but Jessa could not be out alone with him until they were married.

You are absolutely right. Like many devout Christians, I know as the Duggars SHOULD know through their daily devotionals that the Old Testament teachings are done away with with the sacrifice of the Saviour. The OT teaches the Law of Moses and it makes me kind of laugh when people base their lives on teachings that are clearly done away with in the NT. So much for JB being a spiritual leader. I also liked the comment on how he must have torn out the pages that he didn't like and kept the ones he did. They live a confusing religion. The Bates honestly seem to be easier to take and watch. Does anyone remember the show with the addition and JB and Michelle emphasizing the amount of love in the Bates family as if it was something weird? It struck me because it's not something that I would keep pointing out in a friend's family.

The webpage keeps spazzing on me when I try to post so I hope I'm not repeating myself.

I was noticing that it is possible that Jinger didn't go alone to the ring store, that there may have been a chaperone with her, since the camera was in real tight on just the two of them. I doubt they'd let Jinger go out alone.

Also when Jinger asked for the ring when they were in the bedroom, Jessa gave her a real evil eye, I had to rewind and look a second time but geez, it sure looked evil.

Syndee said...

I've noticed that some of the kids look very much alike, and others quite different. Of the two boys doing the pie, the older one sure looks a lot like Jessa. He's got the puffy lips and has the same speaking mannerisms as she has. I suppose he should be thankful he looks like her and not Josh

Tater Tot said...

Does it seem to anyone else that Jessa just wants to GET MARRIED. She does have an opinion on things for her wedding, but much of the time she seems quite blase' about it. "Sure, whatever..."

And the remark about "we like to learn from experts so we can do it ourselves." Um....one afternoon in a flower shop does not an expert make, or even having skills to take away. And many things are BEST left to the experts...

pretty girl said...

RE to the people who want to know about a kosher kitchen it is when you have meat for one and dairy for another. Jewish people do not mix milk and meat dishes in the same meal? The duggars do not follow Jewish law restrictions. they would need two of everything. two dishes and two everything kind of applicance and special meats blessed by a rabbi.

Totally said...

Tater Tot, I agree about Jessa just wanting to get the wedding done and over with. I think she just used Ben to get out of that house. I don't blame her from wanting out of that mess but she could have done much better than a teenager with no skills or education.

To the person who made the comment about Ben and Jinger: I think it's more of a sibling bond, if anything. Jinger is close to Jessa and has probably spent the most time with the two of them.

Anonymous said...

Re: Um....one afternoon in a flower shop does not an expert make, or even having skills to take away

Ha, at the very end Jessa says she could see one of the girls picking up these skills, and then, it would be great to have a florist in the family. Another Duggar career made by watching a professional for one day... Someone should tell her you actually have to also learn the names of flowers other than a rose

I think because the casserole had a crust, that's why they used pie. But many times the family does speak in "Duggarese".

I believe Jim Boob would "encourage" her to court. Finding a man would be a good thing for Grandma Duggar if it would get her out of laundry prison. I wonder if it was Jimboob's decision for her to move in with them. I believe she owns the house that Jessa and Benseewald live in now. Did he think it would be wrong for her to live their by herself without a man? Did Jimboob become her authority figure when his dad passed away?

Aimee said...

I think that maybe Grandma Duggar stays because she knows she is the only loving, supportive adult in their lives. Grandma, as we have seen on the episodes with Amy in TN, is very confident and well spoken. She is comfortable traveling and meeting new people. I think Grandma stays because she pays the most attention to the children, especially the little ones, and she is the one who plays with them. We have seen her read to the children and even play four square. Unlike scenes with Michelle and the kids, Grandma has a real laugh and seems to enjoy spending time with them. I honestly think she stays to give the children some stability as their parents travel and parade tv crews through the house.

I saw an article about Anna showing off her 3D ultrasound pictures on the same newsfeed page with an article saying the FDA warns against keepsake ultrasounds. Did she go to a keepsake place to get the 3Ds? I don't remember the doctor doing them when my kids were born.

Anonymous said...

The fact is we just don't know enough yet about ultrasound on fetus. Same with MRI. It hasn't been around long enough. With any type of imaging, less is more. Don't image unless medically necessary. These ultrasound sound boutiques do not have a doctor on site, or even affiliated. Do you know the probes can malfunction and heat up enough to cause burns?

And the 3D US require more frequency. I urge no one to do them.

Grandma Duggar is not poor! She owns several properties in her own name and according to a friend of a friend, she does get her own money from TLC.

Have you noticed all the Hollister the D kids are wearing? (Bates too)

That is the most NIKE store of all. Cheaply made but very expensive. I doubt all those shirts came from second hand. Jinger's cotton maxi dress is just as form fitting as a pair of jeans, in fact I think it is less modest in Duggar standards.

I like how the girl's look most of the time. They are modern yet covered.

I had some time on my hands this morning, and I looked up the county assessor's records on the Duggar properties..it seems that the properties Jim Bob and his LLC Corp own aren't anything of great shakes; small businesses on the lots, etc., vacant acreage with agricultural exemptions on them; which SUBSTANTIALLY reduce the taxes due on them; (put one animal or a fruit tree on the land and you get an ag exemption). Also, I believe these businesses are the ones that have been featured on the show or the businessmen who "cheerfully" teach the Duggar children their craft and skill for free..I thought it might be "his tenants" who are forced in to doing these things...Also, an interesting tidbit: is the property that Mary Duggar owns...none of them are great homes, mostly on dirt roads, none of which I would live in; the only decent house she owns is the house that Deanna Duggar and Mary Duggar have joint ownership in; Amy's parents house is on a decent street with a paved road and a nice neighborhood, So. Deanna is living in a house that her mother bought her.. Also, Jim Bob has a lot of properties in the neighboring county; the one with Stoney Brook house; it is assessed in the $400,000 range..over 4,000 sq. ft...Also, Duggar Automotive property is owned by Jim Bob, so I don't know what it is that Josh claims to have that was "given to him"; I guess he ran the car lot, that's all..I couldn't find the ownership of the business...Yes, I know, I had a lot time on my hands today, as it was very cold outside...Just an interesting things.. Grandma is very well fixed for herself, so there is absolutely no need she has to live with Jim Bob at all...also, Jim Bob's father did quite well for himself with all this real estate..such a shame his son trashes him the way he does..Anyone know who actually is listed a business owner of Duggar Automotive?

Re Granda Duggar I agree. Re Michelke; lately in front of cameras of course, she states she needs to spend time with her older children. However she comes across as forced & rehearsed. I was surprised when Jim Bob started trashing his dad b/c I know I read a newspaper article many years ago, probably before their actual series started, that talked about the Duggar family real estate holdings. It was probably from the time Jim Bob was in politics. It claimed the Duggars had had a lot of real estate in that area from way back, like maybe even JB's grandfather. I wish I had printed and saved that article. The impression I remember from it was that JB's family, at one time, had some land that was lucky enough to be sold or developed, etc., whatever. Does anyone else know anything about this story or article?

Thanks for the info from the poster who looked up the licenses. Very interesting.

Also, JMO, but I think Grandma D. does not live alone and is discouraged from remarrying because of the Gothard rules (?)

Heart in Florida said...

Many thanks, sandi...who owned the business when Josh supposedly owned and ran everything? When did it sell to these people and who was the "seller" listed? I bet it wasn't Joshua Duggar...that boy never owned anything...he "ran it" for the family...quite misleading.
Also, I went on the satellite image and you can look around the property and down the block; that house that Josh and now Jessa live(d) in, is in a terrible location; main street throughway, elevated highway just to the left of the property; I wouldn't want to live there with small children for any money; it's just too dangerous... Anna surely was "drunk with hormones" to agree to that shack and it's awful location; quite depressing...even the trailer in Putnam County Fl was better than that..

Give that in 2011 Real Midwives of D.C. were planning to hire a fifth midwife, and Birth Options Alliances has an extensive listing for Washington, DC Metro Area, I think Anna will still be able to get the personal one on one experience she had for her three other births.

Well now about Anna's experience - she had an OB for her first pregnancy not a midwife. They bailed to the home birth with no trained help probably because the on call dr wouldn't be filmed. Her second she didn't seem to get much pre-natal care. We saw an ultrasound at a free standing place that does them for entertainment and she had no midwife at the delivery. The third pregnancy was the only one where Anna used a licensed midwife. I can't say she has shown an overwhelming interest in midwife care.
