Just announced this week.
Bates family statement on their blog.
Promo on ET website.
We'll put up posts for their episodes here as there are so many similarities that a new blog would be redundant.

And another family sells out to TLC. I guess they didn't like the comment I made, it was there for a while but now it's gone. Just sunshine and rainbows from all the sheeple.......

I thought the Bates had more integrity than the Gosselins, Roloff's, Duggars, etc. At least they won't have to borrow money from their older son now.

Pimping their baby in TLC garb, shameful and disgusting!

I hope all the money goes to pay back Lawson, and then into savings. I am wondering why they didn`t wait to see how the special on Tuesday works.

I hate it when I'm right like this. About 6 months ago, Kelly Bates swore they'd never do a show because it would interfere with homeschooling. She went on to say that during the "school year" they only travel as far as can be made in a weekend. She intimated that they like to take the summers off like "regular school."

TLC was filming in the beginning of February when Jeb(they do love their Confederate generals, don't they?) was born. Last time I checked, that's school time. If the 8 episode season is airing this summer, I assume they're taping now. School time.

I'm hopeful that Zach will get officially engaged; he's set some kind of Gothard record for the longest courtship. Priscilla Keller was courted, wedded and bedded in under 6 months' time. I'm curious how they'll incorporate the new bride and what happens to her family's ministry, which is the bluegrass band. Since the girl typically goes to live with the husband's family, I hope they explain how that all works since leaving her own family hurts it financially,

The ratings for the Duggars must be decent and proportionate to the money being spent by TLC, because the network is paying for a copycat show. The people who love the Duggars will love the Bates family, because they have a bunch of kids who spend all their time together, the wife is soft-spoken, the husband enjoys talking on camera, they think they are a great musical act, and they talk a lot about their ideas on having and raising children. The people who watch the Duggars to mock, question, or hope for a train wreck will think the same of the Bates' show.

The Duggars' recent ratings have been tanking. I think that's why TLC is trying another variety of the same thing. They did the same with multiples shows.

I guess we all saw this coming. So much for "never doing a show" and whatever else Kelly claimed.I am sure we'll get some more spin (there's plenty of it on the Bates blog post already) that justifies why they decided to do a show. I am sure after "discussing" and "praying" with the Duggars the Bates saw the need for the show.No doubt after years of seeing the changes evil television has made on the lives of the Duggars, the Bates wanted a piece of that too.No more prairie dresses and borrowing from Lawson. They're in the money now.Actually I wonder was the Duggars "gift" of the house remodel really just the stage being set for a potential show.Surely they couldn't film in thr previous home.

This does not surprise me at all. They did totally insist they did not want to do a show, but now, here we are. Gil may need to add "get your own reality show" to his DVD for sale on IBLP site on how to support a mega-family without a salary. IBLP and ATI are probably behind all this, like paying The Bates to sneak in and promote Gothard on national TV in their sweet, sugar-coated "we're just one big 'ol happy family" kind of way. Well, here we go...step aside Duggars, here come The Bates.

Not happy to see it will be a show. The Bates are nearly carbon copies of the Duggars but I still like them better and really thought they wouldn't go beyond doing a few specials. TLC probably wants to see if this show will do well so they can end 19kids. They tried this to end kate+plus with that table for 12 show but that show didn't last and kate didn't last much longer after that sooo hopefully that will happen here again!

Jac&Jil said...

Maybe the Bates signed up with TLC so they can pay the hospital bill for baby Jeb. Can't be cheap spending a week in the NICU, and I don't think Lawson would have the money for Gil and Kelly to borrow.

Agree with Porcupine Pie about the baby in the TLC garb.

I, for one, will not be watching. It is enough to see the young lives of the Duggar offspring taken from them. Another mother who gives birth to babies like they were kittens and passes them over to an older sister is just too much from the same station. I am beginning to wonder if the producers of TLC aren't misogynistic. They seem yo seek out these groups or "cults" if you will to publicize. First, the Duggars, the Sister wives, the gypsies, and now the Bates family. These show all adhere to the principal that women are not trusted to be allowed outside their "like-thinking" groups. They even have to travel in pairs or have a male member of the family accompany them. They work at the homes (whatever that may be) of their parents until some clown condescends to marry them. Then, they are supposed to do their best to populate their own little part of the world. All the while, doing whatever their "lord and master" desires. They are kept undereducated and poor. It is getting tiresome to see these women under the subjugation of a member of the opposite sex. They are just a small step away from being put in a burka.

Just what century is this?

sandi said...

what's the show going to be called? 19 kids and counting is kind of already taken...

At least the Bates family has legitimate musical talent. Their violin playing and singing (thus far, at least) hasn't made my ears cry uncle like when the Duggars appear en masse with instruments in hand.

nana dear said...

I guess Gil and Kelly have not taken the 'living without debt' class if they have borrowed from their son.
Here are my predictions:
There will be no more homemade dresses out of a one size fits all pattern.
Kelly, since she still can carry a baby, will add a 20th arrow to the quiver first. Mega ratings!
There is a Bates/Duggar wedding on tap...remember to set your DVRs.
Aside from all that, just the same show with different faces.

Beyond the comments I've already made, I think what really bothers me about this is that TLC has found the perfect family to prey on because the Bates family does not even own a television. So they have no way of knowing what kind of carnival fare that network serves up, nor how the Duggars have been negatively edited on their show (especially during the "pop up video" bubble days in the beginning), nor the way the network took advantage (financial and otherwise) of J&K+8.

They probably really do think TLC is giving them a way to "minister" to people rather than being able to see how they and their children are being exploited for $$$.

Wampascat said...

I think the Bates were just waiting for their chance to jump on the TLC gravy train. They've been watching the Duggar family reap the rewards of pimping out their kids for years. Now it's their turn. The Duggar clan will show everything but their knees for a buck. The Bates will be no different.

sandi said...

I agree,the Bates' music doesn't make my ears hurt.Either they are more talented,have a better teacher,or both.either way,they are more entertaining.

Sixpence never the richer said...

While I like the fact that more money would make it easier for the Bates kids, I agree with those that say it will be the same show with different looking people in it. I hope that America has finally decided that we've had enough of these families and BOTH shows will die out.

Sixpence never the richer said...

I also have a hard time swallowing the Bates family. The sweet voices and smiles are only part of the story IMO.

Andrea said...

There is something less offensive about the Bates. The young women of the family seem less cloister than the Duggar's. I don't find Gil as annoying and grating as Jim Bob. Still trying to decide if I'll watch. I'm so totally turned off of 19 kids and counting. I haven't watched since number 20 was announced.

tulip said...

I agree (as someone previously posted) the house remodel was all leading up to an eventual possibility of a show...there's no way they would be filmed in the tiny original house. I have no idea how they all lived there, from the scenes of it that have been shown in early Duggar episodes. Now, of course, they've got a mini-me version of The Duggar's, and from the promos on TLC, the kitchen appears to be outfitted with all spanking-new stainless steel appliances-free of a single fingerprint. The laundry room, though, hasn't caught up. I guess a new line up of front loaders are next on the list.

19 Kids is like a train wreck or a naked person running through a baseball stadium, one just can't help but watch. This will be just the same with the Bates. There will surely be an episode here or there where the Duggar Fam goes and meets up with the Bates, in hopes to raise the ratings of either or both shows. I am not as up on my Bates info as with the Duggars, so who is Lawson? If a girl within this beliefe system begins courting someone and feels the courtship is not for her; does she have the go ahead to end it? I was just wondering if that may be why Zach's courtship has been such a long one, as someone suggested it is.

sandi said...

IDK,I thought Gothardism required at least a 2 yr courthship, like Josh and Anna had? But then I guess I am wrong, since Priscilla's was under 6 mo.

closetDfan said...

According to Josh and Anna's website, Josh asked to court Anna in January 2008. Her father said yes and from then till what seems to be her birthday in June that same year, they talked on the phone but never saw each other in person. Then in June he drove down to ask her to marry him in person. It was September 2008 they got married. So it was a summers worth of seeing each other face to face before they got married. People who meet on the internet and never talk face to face, then one day meet, get married all the time. I guess other than the weird rules about kissing and the way they strangly held hands, it's really no different. Maybe the courtship/engagement is supposed to be short so they have just enough time to kind of know who they will be spending the rest of their life with, but not too much time so they start actually growing a brain in the process of talking to someone outside their family.

I'm guessing Zach and Sarah's wedding will be one of the episodes airing this summer...maybe they'll announce it in the special tonight?

Elverna Bradshaw said...

How much of that hillbilly singing are we going to have to put up with each week? I guarantee this is to drum up music engagements for the family.

I just had a thought about Zach becoming a county commissioner (or whatever he is). It seems like he might be in a position to give out some nice county contracts as to tree trimming (like when electrical wires are impeded, etc.). I wonder who he could hire for that.

Wampascat said...

Please, no more. Same song , different tune. ( out of tune, might I add). It's the same family as the Duggars in tacky clothes. Why bother???

mom in texas said...

Typically the courtships are relatively short as with Priscilla Keller and David Waller. Josh and Anna's seemed long but the actual courtship wasn't. Zach and Sarah's courtship seems to be dragging a bit. Also Priscilla's courtship may have been short because she's older.Longer courtships infringe on fertility years especially with an older bride. Zach and Sarah's wedding may probably be an episode this summer.

I personally don't see a difference between the Duggars and the Bates. Kelly has that same sweet baby voice as Michelle, and the kids seem incredibly protected and cloistered, and even a little backwards in regards to dress and technology. I don't think the Bates girls have any more or less freedom. I seriously think it's the same song, different verse. I guess it'll be interesting to see how they do ATI, but considering it is the same type of family I don't see it really being that different.

It would have been more interesting to film a mainstream mega-family, not another ATI family.

Jen said...

"Zach and Sarah's courtship seems to be dragging a bit."

I guess that is because Zach has not finished college yet.

When Kelly was asked on their blog how long the courtship was going to be she answered.

"We’re not sure. They are praying for God’s direction, but Zach will finish his college first."

Since I am a fan (go ahead and shoot me) of the Bates family, I liked the show. No kids were yelling, riding bicycles, jumping on couches, walking on kitchen counters in the house, or trampling babies. The kids have way more personality and freedom. I am not the one to judge southern gospel music, it's not what I was raised with. There is way less in the way of gender roles. Boys help with housework, Zack is said to be a good cook, girls can go hunting, shooting, and cutting down trees if that is what the want to do. Kelly actually takes care of her children and does housework, the laundry that no one else wants to do, for example. As for 'pimping their baby in TLC garb' that might have been a donation and 'suggestion' from TLC. Everyone who is old enough and has never borrowed a $20. from one of their kids raise their hands. Lawson is not supporting the family, he buys groceries and gets paid back for them. No doubt he contributes. Most grown children living at home do. He loaned money to his siblings, he has been paid back by both Erin and Zack.

Kelly (Jo) Bates is having gallbladder surgery today. I wonder who's paying for it? Maybe now that they are on the TLC paycheck, lots of other surgeries will happen and be paid for by TLC.

So how long til they're "Duggarized"?

Use a Name to Participate said...

I don't think this show will last long. It will start out showing how they manage with all the kids they have. Then TLC will start sending them on "field trips" and then the product placements will start. They already showed a birth of a baby on the first show. They already got an addition put on their house that started out as an expansion of the laundry room that Jim Bob is so fond of mentioning every chance he can. They do seem more likable than Jim Bob and Michelle but I don't think it would take too much time for the fame to go to their heads as it did the Duggars.

leah said...

And so the Duggar humbling process begins. I knew this day would come sooner or later. I'm sure Michelle is sick with jealousy.

Willow said...

Interesting that Michelle and Kelly have had to have gallbladder surgery. I wonder if it is a common result of so many pregnancies. I know it is a common surgery, but in my circle of about a dozen best friends (those of us who were pregnant together), only 1 had gallbladder surgery. Just curious.

sandi said...

Yes,I think gallbladder problems tend to be the result of the high level of estrogen in pregnancy, but that can happen with just one pregnancy,so probably multiple pregnancies would increase that chance,it would seem.I'm not a Dr. though.

Just Me said...

Re: gallbladder surgery, 3 of the risk factors for having gallbladder issues are being a female, being 40 (or over) and being fertile. Kelly and Michelle certainly match those.

Alysa said...

So I think this was Kelly addressing the KKK guy picture (forgot his name!) :Dear Diane,
We are not members of the tea party. We were given a set of hand drawn pictures of Civil War soldiers as a gift. As soon as someone brought this to our attention, we removed it. We do not approve of any prejudice, and are grateful to have been raised in families who taught us that the variety of skin colors adds beauty to our world, like colorful flowers in a garden. Love, Kelly

I know that some people tend to think all of the issues addressed are just "damage control" or sometimes lies to make them look better... I however believe them. This could change, I just have a hard time believing they would lie in such a way.

sandi said...

I agree,Alysa.Kelly has made other such comments prior on her blog, and she doesn't come across as the least bit prejudiced.
I have looked for info on whom Gothard allows into ATI,but can't find anything outward as to any kind of predjudice regarding skin color, however, that doesn't mean it isn't there. I just don't know.I fully believe the person who said they don't allow very overweight ppl into it,as you can see from the pics that no one fits that criteria.I do think Josh may become an exception though, given his media exposure to Gothardism.JMO.

imaamy said...

Sandi, I had not heard of overweight people being excluded. Several Bates family members carry extra weight.

sandi said...

imaamy, which ones? they all look like they're a very normal, healthy weight to me.JMO though.

Miggy said...

"Sandi, I had not heard of overweight people being excluded. Several Bates family members carry extra weight."

I have heard this but I thought it only applied to women. Wives are expected to maintain their figure, even with multiple pregnancies. It is some rule about remaining attractive to your husband so he is not tempted to stray. (Obviously, this being ATI, if a husband strays we have to find a way to blame the wife.)

Stephanie said...

Regarding Josh's weight. I think he is packing it on to go on another reality show like Celebrity Fit Club or the Biggest Loser or make is "diet" a major storyline if they keep their show. Snoozer. I would, however, watch him on Dancing with the Stars. Haha

I fear that tlc will put spin on the Bates new series.

Example: Alyssa wanted to go hunting for her birthday and they went to have shooting gun lessons first. They were surprised on what a good shot she was. Seemed to be implying she had never shot before and that they just learned that she was good at it.

But then you see this blog entry date 2010

http://gilbatesfamily.com/2010/11/05/alyssas-day-out/

Appears she has liked hunting for a while now and it appears she was a perfect shot back then.

I am getting so over "reality" tv.

Use a name and the right thread said...

Rumor has it the new Bates reality show will probably be called 'United Bates of America." I heard that directly from Erin Bates' mouth in an interview or I would have thought it sounded like a corny joke.

Yeah!!! I can't wait! Love the Duggars and love the Bates too! It is always a great source of encouragement for me just with homeschooling my 4 children!
