Tuesday, March 20, Boys Day Out

It's a fun day out for the Duggar boys! Watch as Jim Bob takes his sons to Fort Rock, AR for a father/son campout. But before they leave, Joy Anna has a special treat in store for the boys -- that is, if she doesn't burn them first.

We know whatever Joy is baking didn't burn because that's the "drama" of the show, but I sure wish it had, just to prove that girls are not all cut out for cooking, and all the other "wifely duties" she is being trained for because it's "woman's work."

I really can't stand the way they're trying their hardest to shoehorn square peg Joy into a round hole. Especially her father. Just let her become her own person. Oh wait...

I actually read the description as Joy Anna might burn the boys before they can leave. lol. I was wondering if she was setting things on fire.

I hope Joy's not baking any of Amy's "healthy" raspberry bars.

I thought it was always a special day for the Duggar boys! The girls are the ones who need a break.

The only time Michelle spends time with her daughters is when she's preaching and needs to "show them off." Jim Bob actually DOES stuff with his children (father / son and father / daughter camping trips). As crazy and dumb as Jim Bob can be, I do believe he's a good dad or at least tries to be. I feel like Michelle just uses her children.

Yet another episode where Michelle talks about how well she thinks her pregnancy is going. More talk of prenatal vitamins, water, exercise, and protein. We know how this story ends. I think its extremely sick that they are making this whole situation a "plot" for a "reality" show. Would anybody be watching these mundane episodes if we didn't know about the miscarriage? Think about it. "serve and swerve" was about a fish fry (already been done once) and giving a driving lesson. These episodes are painfully boring. They are only putting off the miscarriage episode to scrape up the best ratings they can. Who can say the Duggars are GOOD people with a straight face? Not me. Good people would not use the loss of their child as material for a tv show.

Rainbow68 said...

I have to agree about the show being painful to watch when Michelle's talking about her vitamins and the pregnancy, etc. The only reason I can think of for TLC to show these scenes is to show how it is for any pregnant woman who miscarries: The excitment of waiting to meet her new baby and in the next few episodes the sadness of losing the baby.

Alberta Rose said...

Lots of families have allowed the service for the loss of a family member to be broadcast. They aren't unique for doing so.

I find no comfort in the excuse saying someone else has done something. If a person steals, his excuse should be other people have stolen? Sin is never excused by saying others have sinned.

Leah said...

So, because other people have used miscarriage as material for a reality TV show, I should excuse the Duggars' lack of judgement? Hmmmm..no. They market themselves in such a way that they open the door very wide for judgement when they are being hypocrites. Which they are.

There would be a total difference if they had made an episode that focused on the loss, the grief, etc WHEN the miscarriage took place. But instead, they are using the miscarriage as a teaser, as if it never happened. We are being shown happy countenances as Michelle takes her vitamins and exercises for the cameras. Then we should all act shocked when she loses the baby. Why are they showing these lame "filler" episodes? For encouragement? No, because the Duggars make more money this way. That is morally wrong to me. And all they seem to care about is that Michelle's knees are censored out, because bare knees are so defrauding. They are the worst kind of immoral. Wolves in sheeps clothing.

JimBob is such a jerk of a dad! He pushed Josiah out of the way while playing paint ball and then acted "embarrassed" during the interview. There's being competitive and being a jerk.

WHY do the Duggars not use proper baking equipment to make their treats?? Joy was using a cupcake tin to make cookies(?), just like Amy used a pan twice as large as she needed to make her "healthy raspberry bars". No wonder they always turn out badly. (and burnt)

JimBob pushing Josiah like that was just unbelievable. You could just feel the unspoken contempt he seems to have for him.

Ugh sickening episode tonight.
From Michelle tonight:
Joy is growing up and looking forward to doing grown up thinks "like cooking and um, all that fun stuff". Gag.
Boys bringing them flowers was "sweeeeeet" I hate it when she says those overused words.
Michelle IS wearing sometype of hairpiece on the crown of her head with the tight curls. It looked terrible today with her bangs.
Jimbob stacking the team and then that backfiring was great.
Jimbob and boys leaving for a campout trip at nightfall? What?

=======================================

Between that and forcing Joy to cook ("what GIRLS love to do" according to Michelle) I was sickened by the way these people are trying to shoehorn these two into their "proper" gender roles. Remember when Jim Bob was rough with Josiah when they made the announcement about J20? JimBob is definitely putting Josiah through "Be a MAN!" and Josiah is enjoying it as much as Joy enjoys cooking.

Interesting there was no mention of the pregnancy on this episode. I wonder if this was taped after the funeral, but before Christmas (maybe the weekend before Christmas, which fell on a Sunday)? I say this based on the snow and how soon the Santorum Express took off after the first of the year, heading to Iowa to campaign for Santorum before the caucus, then straight off to SC to campaign there. Jim Bob and the "adult" children (there's a paradox for ya) were on the bus full-time all month; Michelle and the <18's bussed in on the weekends.

Sorry for the double post but I just read your comment. Josiah was in the episode a little more this week, talked about their supper briefly and then Jimbob shoving him in front of bullets AND if you listen closely at that second Josiah was shot out of the game and had to quit. He literally used Josiah as a human shield. Jerk. Josiah still not interviewing like he used to. Maybe just maybe Jimbob & Michelle are mad at him???
I did enjoy Justin getting the spotlight some tonight, in spite of his dads efforts to stack his own team with the older boys and have Josiah taking a laser bullet for him. Good for Justin.
Joy is excited to "learn to cook and stuff" I can't believe she said that. But the editors sure did put it in along with Jimbob being a cheat against his own children.
I predict Duggar Time will happen next week and Michelle is sitting having to wait on everyone to break the bad news.

At least Michelle is wearing a different RED shirt on this episode! How long have we suffered with that awful green shirt?! I think they took the blog's suggestion! I agree with everyone, it's so sad that the parents are trying to mold Joy's sweet, fun, sporty, basically just a regular girl in that age group who hasn't been completly brainwashed yet, already trying to get her to be the,"perfect wife to marry and have kids later on." I really, really hope she, along with the others, although I have many doubts, that they are strong enough to follow there own paths, go to real colleges, find someone that they are truly in love with, not just being married off to, have careers, etc. If I were to suddenly have to live in and be in one of there shoes, I have to idea how I could manage to do all the cooking, cleaning, child care, dishes, being mommy or daddy's assistants, and the list can go on and on. I know already being a wife and mother, there are many hard days or situations you have to deal with, but I could not even imagine being in there's. My heart really does go out to those beautiful, smart, and talented young ladies who deserve so much more in life.

mom in texas said...

Joy Anna is such a beautiful young lady filled with spirit and life.Unfortunately it's all being suppressed by Jim Bob and Michelle. I hate the fact that they feel the need to show Joy Anna doing, as Michelle loves to say, "girl things" like cooking and caring for babies. Newsflash, not all girls love to do those things and they still grow up well-rounded and no less womanly.I have no problem with a person raising their children with certain beliefs,we all do it, however it is sad when children have no choices. Why can't Joy be a girl who likes babies and climbing and cooking and rough housing? The Duggars bother me because their is no other way but the way they believe is right. We are all created as individuals so there is no reason to make cookie cutter children.
Josiah seemed to enjoy himself on the retreat but I do wonder about his relationship with Jim Bob.I know we only get a fraction of the Duggars life on the show but Jim Bob seemed highly embarrassed when the producer asked why he pushed Josiah. It could have been a light hearted moment but Jim Bob seemed incrediably uncomfortable.Maybe he was just being his awkward self.

======================================

She looked about as enthused when she said that as she would have been if she was going to get a root canal.

Of course Jim Bob had to remind everyone that SHE would the chief cook and bottle washer after the older girls get married (like that'll happen anytime soon...can't break up the D&P show). I think the more JimBob and Michelle say that Joy loves this or that duty of the female, the more they convince themselves they're succeeding. Same goes with Josiah becoming the mechanic, etc. Jim Bob was in his youth (and managed to train Josh - somewhat - as well as succeed with John David and Joseph. Maybe Josiah isn't meant for that line of work.

For a family that whined like banshees (especially Josh in an old special) when people complained that they were basically cloning the kids into mini-me's, that's exactly what's happening. The older ones have literally taken over the work the parents USED to do. Michelle has 18 kids at home, yet can work out enough that she's showing off more leg (had a shorter skirt on during this episode, but not as short as the "red door" shots). Who KNOWS what Jim Bob does, except collect rent checks? Hasn't he heard of the mail? I can understand collecting from the tenants on the property rather than have them come to the house, but other than that...why bother? Does he go to Josh's to pick up the rent for the car lots? :D

I really think Jim Bob is envious of Josiah. Josiah is smart and intelligent in ways that Jim Bob never was or will be. I don't think Jim Bob will ever understand Josiah completely or mold him into the definition of "man" that Jim Bob wants all of his sons to follow.

I also found Joy's cooking response "I ain't no baker" to be so true and to the point. I think she will never be like her older sisters, which is refreshing. She seems to march to the beat to her own drummer, despite the attempts by Jim Bob and Michelle to mold her into a "proper young lady" who likes to cook and take care of babies. I think cousin Amy has influenced Joy in a positive way, and we can thank cousin Amy for showing Joy alternatives to the crazy life that Jim Bob and Michelle live.

I wonder too about Jimbob's reaction to the pushing being brought up. IMO it seems like he and Joy are not exactly Jimbob and Michelle's top favorite children. I don't know for sure of any favoritism towards certain kids but I hope there isn't any.

DuggarGoth said...

I feel so sorry for Joy Anna, she is just being "groomed" like the rest of the girls to be a wife and mother IMO. I hate seeing her spirit just getting sucked out of her. I was also kind of disgusted (but not surprised) that Jason trashed the kitchen stabbing the cookies. I'm betting the girls had to clean up the mess.
The thing with Jim Bob pushing Josiah really just shows his true colors and it was sad to watch. I loved the fact that Justin blasted him (2 times) with the gun.
I thought it was very nice that the boys got flowers for the girls but at the same time it would be really nice to see the boys do something like clean the kitchen or make dinner for the girls. I bet they'd like that as well.

So, if they just let her keep up on the path. She would be the hands on mom who does "wife" work and stills goes rock climbing with her kids.

I wonder if pushing Joy so Jana can court? Ratings...

Josiah may be a bit emotional. However, so is his dad. He cried during when his dad passed and think a few other times. I think he is just a senestive soul, not a type who would order his wife around. He would listen about her day and really care.

Stop crushing them. RUN!!!

Confesstion. As the mother of 17 year old twins, my husband is guilty of being a competitive jerk with our boys and I really hate it. I always tell him to grow up. But it usually backfires on him. I don't know why some dads do that. Its babyfied. The thing with. Jimbob, he wasn't even on purpose jokingly pushing him. He was so into it he didn't seem to notice. I really think they are mad at Josiah for not towing the line.

Also, again, poor Joy. However, it seems like the editing lately has been pointing us in the direction of Joy's "reprogramming" from spunky tomboy into dead-eyed female Duggar drone. Wonder why?

I read these negative comments about Jim bob shoving his son while playing and I'm sure dads and sons would do that king of thing while playing any competitive sport. If they had been playing football and Jim Bob had tackled a son, would that be any different?

As far as Michelle and the miscarriage, I'm not sure what order they filmed things, but they did not film her taking vitamins AFTER the miscarriage. One show filmed the date on their phone as Oct. 27, way before the miscarriage.

I think part of the Duggar contract with TLC is to show their family additions so when she miscarried they had to figure out how to handle that. I would say Jim Bob and Michelle discussed it and felt that since so many women have experienced that hurt that they would show how their family handled it. I think that shows strength and character on their part, not love of money.

They try so very hard not to be judgmental about others yet (and because they put themselves on tv) they are judged very harshly and speculations made from very little information.

I do think Joy Anna is very much a Tom Boy being around her brothers so close in age, and I'm glad she is full of energy and has a desire to enjoy outdoor things. Maybe she needs to go hunting with the Bates.

Stephanie said...

I think Josiah and Jimbob where on the same team and Jimbob ran for the cover and literally kneed him out from behind the cover. I think he said something to him and Josiah got up to move because there was not enough room for them both and Josiah got shot out of the game. Jimbob was being selfish and Josiah was respectful and listened to his dad. Its not like it was fun and games and they were on opposite teams.

I didn't know Joy said "I ain't no cook" that grammar drives me crazy. Yes the little boy getting those burned cookies off the trays made a huge mess that some girl had to clean up.

Joy should hope and pray her 4 sisters don't leave all at once. She will be the head housekeeper if that happens to three older brothers and 6 little boys. By then the little girls will be doing laundry and Joy will be in the kitchen. Those boys don't do anything. John David is 22 years old. When tyey are home what does he do all day? I haven't heard anything
about the towing business in a long time.

Michelle did look good in the red blouse. I haven't seen this short skirt Michelle is wearing in the promo photos. I am going to look for it.

Because there was no other material to work with; they used recycled material for the bulk of this past "season."

Also, Arby's was a total set-up. I noticed on the west coast airing that there was an Arby's commercial in the segment before the boys ate there, and they got end-credit. I doubt these people have to pay for many meals out, especially if cameras are present, or if they're openly campaigning. However, I imagine poor Josh has to pay for a lot of those meals he and Anna eat when they're home and posts on his instagram.

Joy is definitely being groomed as a homemaker. She doesn't know/remember how to use the oven?, and is "learning" how to cook? This is a contradiction from a couple seasons back where there was an episode of the kids making breakfast, and Michelle bragged about how Joy was really taking to cooking, and starting to make full meals, etc. It must have been wishful thinking as well as forcing the gender role. If Joy has been cooking since 2 seasons ago, she wouldn't have a problem baking off some cookies. Either that, or it was just in the script.

According to the website for Fort Rock Christian Family Camp and Christian Retreat Center, the Father/Son Retreat was held on December 6th and 7th. Wasn't that right around the time of the miscarriage?

That would have been RIGHT before everything happened (and begs the question, why did they say it was a "weekend retreat" if if happened in the middle of the week). I think the big "j"ender doctor appt. was either Thursday or Friday (I want to say Friday) and she miscarried around midnight Saturday/Sunday, with the funeral the following Wednesday, the 14th. (Sorry, too lazy to look up the exact dates, but I recall the funeral being on a Wednesday...I think I had a paper due that day).

One thing that bothered me I noticed last night is the lack of cleanliness in the kitchen! Kids on top of counters, throwing food, one of the boys scraping, stabbing the cookies off the sheet, and throwing them everywhere! Like everyone else is thinking they want Joy to love cooking, Like what they want her to like, etc. Esentially for Joy to be mom and dad's puppet to use. Sickening! My husband doesnt even watch the show, but he happened to see how Jim Bob treated Josiah, he even thought that was beyond fathers and sons goofing off and playing, we both thought it was just mean! I also noticed when he was commenting on camera on it, he certainly acted like he hoped they didn't catch that!

The episode did not make the cable top 100. The Little Couple did for both episodes but barely. Both episode were a bit over 1 million viewers for Bill and Jen.

Yes because Jubilees rock star funeral was held on my husbands birthday December 14th. I forget the actual date of birth and the actual date of the sonagram, but it would have been the week after that father/son caming trip. I would like to know what time the Duggar boys were suppose to be at campsite? They left at dark and I want to know what time they were suppose to be there?

tulip said...

Speaking of cleanliness, I remember an episode where Johanna or Jennifer was helping Jill to cook, Jill told her to go wash her hands, and then the little one proceeded to climb up on the counter sitting with one (visibly) dirty foot hanging over the cookie sheet touching a piece of bread. This definitely isn't the only example, and this is on TV...you think they would think twice.

Wampascat said...

Its's certainly a departure from the fresh scrubbed children we saw when the show first began. The younger kids are allowed to run riot over everything, including the infants. The house isn't very clean. Their feet are always filthy and they crawl all over the kitchen counters. Oh well, what can you expect from an emotionally (and many times physically) unavailable mother? Jim Bob is certainly not much help. Babysitting, indeed!

I took notice to Josie last night as she swung between the piano and the bench. We often see her running wild, twirling about carefree. Although children should be able to be kids but even Josie, whose only been there 2 yrs old knows there is no boundaries,a far cry from the earlier Duggars years. I was especially bothered by little brother Duggar (perhaps Justin??) and how he destroyed Joy's cookies. He is old enough to know better.Maybe he would if he had two available parents.

I'm glad Bill and Jen were mentioned. Compare/contrast how they dealt with the loss of their child (after all the trials that Jen endured to get it) to the Duggars' "rock star funeral" (perfect!). One couple was a class act, 100%, the other? Negative territory in the end.

I finally watched the show last night. WOW. Jim Bob showing his true colors. For a man who preaches "putting others first" I can't believe the way he tried to stack the teams and then hip checked his son into the open in order to win a game. He's there for "father/son bonding" and this is how he acts? Even his sons seemed surprised. I'm glad the little one (Justin?) went after him sniper style. Serves him right! Seems a little CINO. Oh, and the baking! Cookies thrown all over the place because "that's how boys are". *eyeroll* I'd like to think he was made to clean it up, but I'm sure Joy Anna or another sister was. I'm on board that Joy Anna might be the first rebel. I had thought she might be "molded" into submission but if she ends up being the chief cook and bottle washer when her sisters leave it might put her over the edge. Although Josiah might do it too. He's quiet but been through a lot this year. This might effect his thinking about his family's lifestyle.

nana dear said...

I loved how Joy Anna tried to add a little individual style to the Duggar 'uni'. The scarf, hat, and hoodie made her look like the other 14 year old girls in this country. Bet she wishes she could trade that frumpy skirt for a pair of jeans. You go Joy!

Vera said...

Jim Bob should be ashamed. If nothing else, did it occur to him that his sons learn from his actions? For shame! Poor Josiah! Sometimes I wonder if they would actually oust a child who doesn't tow the line...except for the fear that child would write a tell-all.

It has to be obvious that the flattering editing is no longer happening. I wonder if that is due to an ulterior motive on TLC's part or has the Duggar family just gotten so out-of-control that positive editing just isn't feasible any longer.

Cooking and baking are two different things. I started laughing when I saw one of Joy's brother's "helping" her get the cookies off the pan. I can remember my brother helping me. I think it's awesome Michelle and the older girls let Joy try to perfect her technique. I still remember my mom's screech when she saw the mess my brother was making helping out, and telling me to get out of the kitchen, she'd finish making the cookies. Even now 30 years later I'm still hit and miss when it comes to baking cookies. To paraphrase Joy "I ain't no cookie baker" and to quote Michelle "Practice makes progress". This episode reminded me why I started watching the show in the first place.

"What was joy doing to the cookies with those 2 spoons? She was kind if squishing them... Any idea why?"

The only thing I can think of is that she does that to make it easy to grab just a piece off at a time. Maybe with so many people eating them it's easier to just be able to break a piece off of the plate instead of taking a whole cookie. Seems weird, but that's all I can come up with.

And Justin (or whichever one it was) didn't "ruin" her cookies. He was scraping the burnt ones off the cookie sheet so that she could use it again.

Penny said...

On parentables, Michelle shared the recepie for the cookies-Mrs, Bundi Crawford's yummy Chocolate Chip cookies-after baking for 5-7 minutes you remmove them from oven then ssquish all sides together using a spoon or fingers. The you bake for one more minute, let sit on cookie sheet for 2 minutes before removing to cool. This sets the bottom and gives a small amount of crunch. I was going to give it a try but it was too much work and time consuming.

mk said...

If you watch, she is trying to get the cookies off of the pan, but they are so thin and underdone, she can't get them off in one piece. So she squashes them into thicker blobs to get them off, I think.

Joy Anna looked so cute baking the cookies. She looked like a normal teenage girl. The scarf and hat were great.

Was hoping Michelle would get out of the car at the parking lot so Joy Anna could stomp the accelerator and escape Duggarville.
