Monday, September 3, 2012, 9:30 PM, Bates Plus 12

When you have a family of 21, what's a few more houseguests added to the mix? The Bates get a visit from their friends the Paines who are a family of 12. Later, we get a lesson on dating, and the family has one very big announcement to share.

30 minutes

Perhaps the episode has been edited.

omg to all of it. A Lesson on Dating. Just what we need. A lesson on dating from a group who is not allowed to even talk to anyone but their own siblings. Golly gee, I hope I learn how to talk to BOYZ!
And gross as it would be, a pregnancy announcement would be fun if only for the sake of driving Michelle over the edge!

Announcement? So are they going to air the whole Zacn and Sarah courtship, right down to the ending?

Nancy said...

The announcement could possibly be a courtship announcement between one of the Pains sons and Erin.

Here's a copy of a post from Nate Paine on the Bateses' blog:

Nate Paine
8/21/2012 12:36:09 AM

"Thanks Erin for all the time and effort you have but into glorifying the Lord in all that you do, especially in the area of music! You and your family are a H.U.G.E. blessing to me for which I am eternally grateful for! You all are in my thoughts and prayers continually...blessings in Him,
Nate Paine (CT) ;) "

No idea with (CT) stands for, especially given both families live in Central Time (unless TN is split...I know Nashville is in the Central Time Zone).

Found the Paines' blog. They're full-on Gothardites (see "Serving at Headquarters," and at 22 Nate is the perfect age for Erin.

Alyssa Bates also has some access to the internet, as she wished one of the daughters happy birthday. She's not even 18 yet, is she? Even so, Kelly was probably hanging over her shoulder; the only Bates Zach and Lawson (he has to be reachable at the store if Kelly/Michael(la)/Alyssa forgot something on the shopping list.

This is what I get for posting in a hurry; typos up the wazoo and I forgot the blog:

12paines.com (won't post a direct link, which can be traced here, but since most new browsers will add it, copying into the browser should work with nothing adidtional needed.

I thought I saw that tonight is the season finale of this shhow? So I guess they only taped 6 episodes and it's not doing well?

s of T minus 2 hours, my guide (Comcast/Xfinity) still mentions the announcement. I wonder which is the case? At such a late date, either Kelly miscarried, or another courtship bit the dust. They had plenty of time to edit out Zach's courtship (and they did).

I have no idea what else it could have been/could be?

Here are the admission guidelines for Crown College. Tori and Alyssa are underage and assuming they've received GED's from homeschool, would have to be 18 to actually enroll in classes.

If they're going to the school, they can't earn credit, or they're getting preferential treatment. I guess rules can be bent if you don't have to answer to authorities who typically monitor admissions in accredited universities (even Liberty and Bob Jones).

TLC edited their synopsis, but with it being a holiday it isn't really surprising that the online guides haven't caught up.

My on-screen guide has never shown the big announcement part.

Does Michaela Bates get a life? She supposedly didn't want to go white water rafting, instead opting to watch the TEN kids too young to go. She seems to be a sad and solitary figure to me.

Michael(la) appears to be the Jill Duggar of the Bateses. The Paines also have their own SAHD. The 27 year old has a male twin who's apparently married; he wasn't listed in their lineup.

With all the hints at romance and the message left by the Paine boy on the Bateses' blog last week, directed to Erin, I think the Bateses were ready to announce her courtship but got gunshy and had TLC pull it after the bad publicity they got over Zach's televised proposal that ended in a failed courtship.

Given the screen told the viewer that it was the SEASON finale, they'll save the engagement and wedding for next season, whenever that is.

I don't really understand Michaella either. It seems odd that a 24 year old or whatever she is would choose to raise her parents' children instead of beginning a family her own. She does seem to genuinely love children but I can't see where this is a preferable life for a young woman. She is not an unattractive woman. There is nothing wrong with her looks and to me she appears more natural than the next few sisters in line. I hope this lifestyle is truly is her own choice and not something she has been brainwashed into. She also seems to be much quieter than the others, and maybe this is a good thing. Maybe she will make the middle of the night escape sometime and no one will notice until she is 200 miles away. I coule kind of see her running off with a hippie type guy and leaving Gothardism far behind.

Well there was no big announcement. Do maybe there was some editing?? I watched this whole episode and saw nothing. The only bright spot was getting to see the nice looking Chad Paine. I am very surprised he isn't married yet.

People have the freedom to choose when they get married. It is much easier to postpone marriage when you are encouraged to live at home instead of going out on your own. I'd far sooner have my son live at home and marry for love then to leave home, become lonely and marry to put an end to loneliness. My father-in-law lived with his parents until he was 27 when he decided to move to the big city because none of the local women appealed to him. At 29 he returned with his wife to help run the family hotel for a few years. When it burned down, they moved to the big city because his parents decided to retire.

I thought it was annoying and very odd that Gil said of the train ride: "There are 29 CHILDREN here and four adults". Not quite, Daddy Gil. At least 6 of the Bates offspring are adults, and it looked like most of the Paines were adult aged too. The 18 through 27 year olds of the two families are not "children".
Maybe if the parents would recognize this, the older ones would be off pursuing their own lives by now.

Erin Bates commented this was the funnest day ever. Why would someone who is almost finished her college education use "funnest" to describe white water rafting...in a skirt?

The Paines looked like a very kind, godly family. There could probably be a few matches between the 2 families. We'll wait and see what happens.

I have a very large skull b/c of a birth defect so finding helmets for extreme activities like that is hard for me. I didn't think Erin would be able to fit that poofy hair inside a helmet. I haven't seen big hair like that since I was a Bible college in the 1990s.

Is it just me going crazy or was Chad Paine wearing a gold ring on his left ring finger when he was sitting on the couch with Erin playing cards? Those Paine boys are quite handsome.

I thought it interested that Gil talked about the big number of kids on the train and 4 adults even though several "kids" are legal adults. I guess it's age 21 down there in the US, not 18

==================================

Don't forget that all the kids under 12 were back at the train station (or wherever) with Michaella. Didn't they say she had 10 kids or so? Gil inflated numbers for the effect he knows it garners. He's learned his lessons from Jim Bob well; apparently will keep him on our screens for a second "season" despite the crappy ratings. Had the graphic just said "finale," I'd be inclined to say this was a failed experiment, but "season finale" implies more are to come.

Nancy said...

Forgot to add, I saw Kelly's gray roots! She's definitely coloring her hair at this point.

It doesn't surprise me Gil would refer to even the adult children as part of the 'children'. So Sad. Just like Jim Bob & Michelle-when the TV shows and whoever else ask how they manage with "19 children", they never bother to correct or clarify that, in fact, one of their 'children' is married with two kids of his own, and 6 (or, now 7) of them are 16 or older. It seems they think it makes them look more amazing that they've got this many "children". It's gotten more glorified than ever, now that Jim Bob & Michelle are losing their namesake ("19 kids"/moneymaker) to the sheer fact more & more of the '19' aren't 'kids' anymore.

I have to say I commend Michaella, because it seems to be what she wants to do,even if it is different from what everyone else is doing.I used to do the same thing,so I understand.I worked in a day care and liked kids, and I would stay behind on some field trips as well, letting others have a chance to go.Really,it was my own choice,so I do have to commend her for that.I don't see as she's being forced to do so,although I could be wrong.JMO.

I liked the first four episodes but last night was way too much self-praising and the girls talking about how they looked after rafting... apparently "modesty" = "vanity". They should realize that even being all wet they are pretty young women, prettier than many girls, and should be humble and grateful.
My whole family was also waiting for the "big announcement" which never came.

Yes, I agree the Paine boys are good looking, and I noticed the wedding band on the oldest boy's hand, too. Maybe he's engaged or it's a male "promise ring?" Not sure, but Erin seemed to be enjoying his attention..My husband noticed that Alyssa talks too much, and I replied "She's just a Jill Jr." I like how Michaela stays away from the cameras. I have a feeling she's not too thrilled with the idea of having video cameras around all the time. I sure would find it annoying.

The oldest Paine "children" that came to visit the Bateses were 27, 25, 23 and 22. Glad they could all get the time off from their "employment" to make the trip. Geez, do any of these people actually work? I could think of a better place for a 27, 25, 23 and 22 year old to vacation -- like anywhere but a train ride with 10+ little kids. How about a cruise (only in my dreams).

Elspeth said...

I didn't think the band was on the Paine boy's wedding ring finger. Could be wrong.

Doc Paine left a family practice when he was 40 to essentially stuff envelopes for Gothard. Given that he's not practicing any longer (at least 10-15 years from the looks of him), can he still be called Doctor?

Family bios can be found at 12paines.com (broken link so the blog won't be noted as the original source). I thought the bios were 4 years old until they confirmed the ages on the show. Apparently, they put up the original bios in 2008 and I thought they hadn't been updated, but someone is at least doing minimal updating of ages.

Nate, the 22 year old, is the one who left Erin the message. I guess we'll see if there's an announcement later.

joy anne said...

Maybe it's a purity ring, not a wedding ring. But if I were a 20-something single woman (I'm actually 30-something) and saw such a cute guy with a gold ring on his left hand, I'd probably assume he's already taken. Erin seemed interested in him, but I think the Bateses have learned their lesson about publicizing early-stage courtships.

I guess there isn't anything interesting enough for tourists there in Lake City so they had to go on a 3-hr train ride. Interesting that so many adult Paine kids were on this trip. Do they all still live at home without "real jobs" they need to work at each day.

I watched the episode on amazon and rewound the part with the ring on Chad and it was definitely on his middle finger, not ring finger.

I see no foundation for such a theory. Being on one's own a person knows that they can support themselves, knows that they can be an independent fully functional adult, and thus doesn't have to have a spouse to be able to leave home.
