Michelle Went to Hospital for Gallbladder Problems

According to People it was a gallbladder attack. She has my sympathy as that is very painful.

The statement is also on the Huffington Post here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/07/pregnant-michelle-duggar-_n_383322.html

It looks like it is not a miscarriage as some have feared. Michelle is what, 26 weeks along now? So the baby could (probably) survive anyway with strong medical intervention.

Anyone know how good their health insurance is? Since JimBob is self employed do they self insure? Are they uninsured?

I hope she'll be okay, but maybe this is body's way of saying that this should be the last pregnancy.

Know when to say when.

People mag reported that it was only gall-bladder issues and not a result of the pregnancy, and that she and the baby are doing well, no need for early delivery at this time. I am glad they are both OK!

I wonder if the Duggar's might use one of the expense-sharing "insurance" programs? There are several (I can't remember any names) and they seem like the type of people who would go for that. We considered it at one time but ended up using regular insurance.

I'm glad she is okay. I had my gallbladder taken out in early 2007 when my baby was 6 months old. I have since found out it is fairly common after childbirth. However, it does not cause any problems with future pregnancies - I had another pregnancy since then with no complications from it. I tell you what, I think the gall bladder pains were worse than childbirth!

JimBob has said they have low cost/high deductible insurance for the self employeed. They have had the same company for years.
Maternity benefits are getting lower with all insurances (in fact I have self employed private insurance and last week got a letter saying the maternity deductible is going up for $8500 next year from that is double what is was when I joined in 2005).

JimBob's plan probably has a 5k or so deductible per pregnancy, which I am sure he budgets for happily, and then you usually pay 20% after the 5k until you reach your out of pocket limit (another $3-5k). I'm sure JimBob is prepared and will never take public assistance.

I just really hope that what we read is true and not the family sugar coating what is going on(like it being HELP vs gallbladder). I understand their need for privacy. It just seems weird they life flight someone for gallbladder issues. I had gallbladder problems when preganant and had it removed weeks after having my baby. I can name at least 5 friends that all had gallbladder issues, one had hers removed while pregnant and I live in a small town and none of my friends were life flighted to the big city. But I guess none of us have a big tv show either!

Goodness I hope Michelle and the baby are fine.I know plenty of women who go through major issues during pregnancy and everything ends up fine. I wish the Duggars the best.

I definitly hope Michelle and the baby are okay. I just clicked onto my home yahoo page and this story is in front right now. I gasp when I saw it but glad she's fine, at least I hope so. Imagine how the children feel knowing Mommy is sick and went to the hosptial, and not to have a baby either.

I think when he gets home, The older girls(Joy-Aanna-Jana) should go away for a week to a hotel or a spa or somthing.

The older boys need to learn how to take care of young kids(ex:josh not being able to put in the car seat);and when the boys get married, they need to learn how to deal with pregnant woman and the med issues they may come about.

The girl also need a break and to show there parent they can do just fine on there own :).

I'm in PR, regarding your statement that the pregnancy and gallbladder are unrelated: According to the National Institutes of Health (nih.gov), Yes, being pregnant does have something to do with gallbladder problems.

This quote is taken directly from the National Institutes of Health website:

"Excess estrogen from pregnancy, hormone replacement therapy, and birth control pills appears to increase cholesterol levels in bile and decrease gallbladder movement, which can lead to gallstones."

NIH is a reputable website.

I've been curious as to why the Duggars have said so little about this pregnancy -- no gender announcement, nbo shows about doctor's visits, etc.

When I was 41 and pregnant with my second son I had gall bladder pain. My dr. advised lowfat diet - I was only 3 months pregnant. Luckily, the attack only lasted a day.

I also have a friend who developed severe gall bladder trouble right before her due date. She delivered early and they took out her gall bladder the next day.

GB trouble is VERY common during pregnancy - the theory is estrogen somehow affects the gall bladder.

I feel bad for Michelle - she still has several months to go, and if this is severe she may need her gb out soon.

I am a frequent reader of these blogs but never post; usually because what I want to say has alraedy been posted.

In regards to this issue I can personally say I have alot of experience. I suffer from horrible gallstones, 7 I believe was the last count. Because my gallbladder is not infected, there was never a major reason for me to have it removed and as long as I eat mostly bland food I am usually fine.

With this said, when I was pregnant with my 2nd child back in 2007, my gallbadder practically killed me. Due to a semi-high risk pregnancy, I was constantly having ultra-sounds.Due to the constant pressing and movement of the techican; I would end up with back-breaking attacks. But I was grateful because whenever they checked the baby they would ultra-sound my gallbladder to keep an eye on it.

When I was around 20 something weeks I experienced the worse of gallbladder attacks. We were driving to the airport to go to Texas when it hit me. I am never one to want to run to the emergancy room; but this time I thought I was going to die. Thankfully it died down after almost 2 hours; but it scared the hell out of me and made the baby kick like mad.

When discussing my gallbladder issues with my doctor I was told that there is a belief that heartburn meds such as Tums can lead to a bad gallbladder if used constantly. When I was pregnant with my 1st I ate them like crazy. Another thing is that usually after pregnancy, woman sometimes end up developing gallstones or such. Its a typical post-symptom.

I'm sure if her gallbladder had busted or is seriously infected the doctors would have removed it immediately. My guess is that from now on especially while she is pregnant she'll be monitored and instructed on how to keep it from flaming up.

FYI - The pain of a gallbladder attack is as severe as having full blown contractions in my opinion.

Anne, what is "HELP?" (You said you hope it is gallbladder vs HELP.)

Gall bladder problems are very common in pregnancy...it's actually kind of surprising she's never had issues before with as many pregnancies as she's had!

It sounds like they were at first concerned about pre-term labor, hence the urgency in transferring her to a bigger hospital.

I hope she's doing better & they can get the baby to full term.

Michelle looks so pretty with her hair up!

I want to be on TLC because they make people look better as they get older.. no fair!

But speaking of Michelle getting sick.. I wonder what their position would be if the doctor told them that getting pregnant again would seriously put Michelle's health at risk. hmmm..

That's a very interesting question.

I am so glad to see Michelle is doing better. She looked rested and healthier in the hospital(I watched the video message on TLC's website) than she does at home.Maybe this is just a sign for her to rest and slow down a bit.It was different to hear Jim Bob say that he hoped Michelle could carry the baby to full term. You dont normally hear that kind of vunerability or doubt coming from the Duggars.I am glad they realize how real the situation is.I pray Michelle and the baby are fine and everything works out good.

I also hope that TLC doesnt make an episode out of this ordeal. That would be a little strange.

re:whether Michelle should get pregnant again, I was thinking that, too, and if the Duggars were to be consistent, I think the answer would be they would continue to practice sex without birth control and insist that God is in charge, not the doctor. I'm even wondering what Michelle is going to do with the delivery of this baby. No doctor is going to help her have a VBAC after three sections. My guess is that's one reason why we've heard so little about the pregnancy. Maybe she is trying to find a practioner who will help her out -- a midwife, etc?

***********************************
She wasn't life flighted to the different ER because she has a TV show... She was life flighted because the attack started contractions and IF she gave birth they wanted her closer to the better NICU because she is still so early in the pregnancy.

If I remember right, a doctor already told Michelle not to get pregnant again after Johanna.

No, the doctor said that Michelle was in excellent health and that she was "made to have babies."

Anonymous said...

Dr. Sarver was the one who said Michelle was "made to have babies". However, Dr. Sarver is the doctor that the Duggars changed to after a previous doctor would not deliver any more VBAC babies.

I just watched the little video message from JB and M on tlc.com. Wow, I can't remember a time other than the passing of his father when Jim Bob looked actually vulnerable. He's always so (sometimes naively) optimistic, but in this video he looks appropriately concerned especially when he speaks directly to her and after that point. I pray that M gets better soon and they can get back home.

One of my childhood friends is related to the Duggars. She posted the following on facebook: "My cousin JimBob and Michelle Duggar had their baby today...3 months early. It is a girl and 1.5lbs. Michelle was having gall bladder problems and went to Little Rock to be close to the NICU. They were hoping to do surgery after the baby was born in March. She got preeclampsia and they delivered her today.Doc says she is healthy just small."

Oh my goodness! If this is true this is very scary. I'm praying regardless. If this is true, we should know more tomorrow. And I pray for Michelle's recovery and for the baby to grow and thrieve.

I've heard the same rumor, baby was born at 25 weeks! I will surely be praying for this family and this dear baby who has a long road ahead of her. Best wished to the duggar family!

Chris said...

Thanks for posting, I have seen several other sites report the baby was born but no offical JimBob AP type story. I hope Michelle is okay , makes me feel like she had HELLP. Pre-eclampsia usually can be managed for at least a few weeks, most times longer to buy time for the baby, weeks 25-30 are so important. HELLP usually means asap delivery like what seems to have happened.
Either way I hope everything works out okay.

Jackie said...

I don't know if this is an offical "source" but Anna's brother in law posted Michelle did have the baby today (he said 24 weeks along not 25 like I had read elsewhere).

I had my last baby at 34 weeks and there were very few complications but 2 weeks in the NICU was very stressful not to mention 60k bill. I hope the Duggars have a positive outcome for both Michelle and the baby.

The following was on Wikipedia this morning. Now, I know that Wikipedia is not always accurate, but it is all that I could find:

"On December 10th at 6:27 PM, baby number 19 was born after emergency C-Section. Michelle, who has been in the hospital recovering from a gallstone, was taken to the OR for an emergency c-section."

Michelle and Jim Bob welcomed their new daughter, Josie Brooklyn ... who weighed in at 1lb., 6 oz."

Please pray for the Duggars and their tiny new arrival! They need it now!

Huffington Post said that Michelle Duggar had an emergency c-section last night . She had a little girl - Josie Brooklyn Duggar and I thing that she weighed 1 lb 6 oz. She is in the NICU.
I really hope those baby making days will quit now. It's not all roses and sunshine especially for someone who is that old and has that many pregnancies. The body does wear out. God bless them both.

I had HELLP syndrome and had my baby at 28 weeks, I never had Pre-Eclampsia and the docs also thought it was my gallbladder. I went into liver failure and got VERY sick VERY quickly. It really was a matter of life and death for both of us when they took my daughter, no time for steroids or anything. She was tiny but after 84 days she came home and is a perfectly health happy 22 month old! I hope TLC respects their privacy as this baby will need to be kept away from media and many of her family for quite sometime to ensure her health. Premie girls come through prematurity much better than boys, that is a NICU fact!! Prayers for the whole family!!

Yes, People Magazine is reporting baby girl born yesterday at just over 1lb....if she was 26 weeks baby will likely be in the hospital til close to due date .... at least thats how it is here in Canada....my three year old was born when I was 29 weeks 6 days and was in the NICU for 8 weeks and she was 4lb 3.5 oz.....just needed to grow and eat!

I too had gallstones during my second pregnancy and baby was born at 37 weeks weighing 8lb...had my gallbladder out when she was 3 months old....the pain i had was brutal during the last few weeks of pregnancy. Praying for recovery for Michelle and that Baby Duggar does well, grows, eats and will be able to go home when all is good!

Hello all, I just thought I would post that its official.

Josie Brooklyn was born Dec 10th. She is 1lb 6oz and is stable at the NICU. Its on the TLC website and it is easiily found if you google "Michelle Duggar" and look at the "news" stories.

I hope Michelle and the baby both pull through this OK.

This is going to be a tough road for the family. That is one tiny baby!

According to TMZ the baby was delivered last night via Emergency C-section.

They say it is a baby girl named Josie Brooklyn, weighing just 1 lb., 6 oz.

Best of wishes to the entire family.

Although I question their wisdom with the number of children, I certainly hope and pray that this littlest one comes through with flying colors. Just under 1 1/2 lbs is tiny but I've actually known several others who've had smaller (I work in the medical field)and things ended up well. Wonder which one of them picked Josie Brooklyn.

Wishing them all well. 1 lb, 6 oz is pretty tiny though.
